Popular blogger Cal Newport reveals the new key to achieving success and true meaning in professional life: the ability to master distraction. Many modern knowledge workers now spend most of their brain power battling distraction and interruption, whether because of the incessant pinging of devices, noisy open-plan offices or the difficulty of deciding what deserves their attention the most. When Cal Newport coined the term deep work on his popular blog, Study Hacks, in 2012, he found the concept quickly hit a nerve.

We have never had so much information at our fingertips, and yet most of us simply don't understand how our world really works. Professor Vaclav Smil is not a pessimist or an optimist, he is a scientist, and this book is a much-needed reality check on topics ranging from food production and nutrition, through energy and the environment, to globalisation and the future. For example, the carbon footprint of meat is well known, but did you know that the equivalent of five tablespoons of diesel fuel goes into the production of each greenhouse-grown, medium-size, supermarket-bought tomato?

There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices.

For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

A groundbreaking manifesto on living better and longer that challenges the conventional medical thinking on aging and reveals a new approach to preventing chronic disease and extending long-term health, from a visionary physician and leading longevity expert.
Description
The first sleep book by a leading scientific expert - Professor Matthew Walker, director of UC Berkeley's Sleep and Neuroimaging Lab - reveals his groundbreaking exploration of sleep, explaining how we can harness its transformative power to change our lives for the better.
Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.
But an explosion of scientific discoveries in the last 20 years has shed new light on this fundamental aspect of our lives. Now, preeminent neuroscientist and sleep expert Matthew Walker gives us a new understanding of the vital importance of sleep and dreaming. Among so many other things, within the brain, sleep enriches our ability to learn, memorize, and make logical decisions. It recalibrates our emotions, restocks our immune system, fine-tunes our metabolism, and regulates our appetite. Dreaming mollifies painful memories and creates a virtual reality space in which the brain melds past and present knowledge to inspire creativity.
Walker answers important questions about sleep: How do caffeine and alcohol affect sleep? What really happens during REM sleep? Why do our sleep patterns change across a lifetime? How do common sleep aids affect us, and can they do long-term damage? Charting cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs and synthesizing decades of research and clinical practice, Walker explains how we can harness sleep to improve learning, mood, and energy levels; regulate hormones; prevent cancer, Alzheimer's, and diabetes; slow the effects of aging; increase longevity; enhance the education and lifespan of our children, and boost the efficiency, success, and productivity of our businesses. Clear-eyed, fascinating, and immensely accessible, Why We Sleep is the crucial account on sleep that will forever change listeners' minds on the subject.

Overdone!
The author of this book is a sleep science researcher.
His work is intended to stress the importance of sleep and its benefits.
Though his claims are probably not unfounded, they appear excessive as sleep is presented as a universal remedy that can prevent cancer, heart ailments, Alzheimer’s disease, etc. It is also held out as the essential contributor to creativity, memory and even physical prowess, both for athletes and musicians.
Given the countless repetitions in the book, many may find that such urging is counter productive rather than convincing.
In addition, the author strangely states that lost sleep cannot be recovered. Why, then, should anyone bother to endeavour to improve his sleep hygiene if he is already doomed?
The book was also written before Fitbit type trackers were common so they are not discussed as such, only anticipated with a surprising assertion that they should be linked to bedroom thermostats.
For specific help with respect to better sleeping, please note the author refers his readers to the National Sleep Foundation.

interesting but somewhat repetitive
Liked the idea of a sleep index for employees based on sleep tracker data, that you can redeem as € bonuses or time off. You need 2 features: quantity (7 to 9h sleep) and consistency (every night).
This, combined with some of the actionable tips to improve your sleep, would make for a valuable product in my opinion.

This book display with evidence the importance of sleep and why it should be a priority to society.
Although, if you are not really into scientific explanations, you can skip the chapters on the evolution side of sleep which is a bit technical.

I recommend this to EVERYONE
I first noticed Why We Sleep on Audible's homepage under "New in Non-Fiction" and clicked on it simply because I saw it was narrated by one of my favorite narrators, Steve West. The subtitle "Unlocking the power of sleep and dreams" makes this sound like it would be full of watered down science and generic advice about getting a good night's sleep or interpreting your dreams. That is NOT what this book is, thankfully. Matthew Walker presents study after study explaining why we need sleep for every aspect of our lives (to prevent disease, to help remember things, to look more attractive, etc.). I was fascinated for all 14 hours of this book. I've recommended it to every person I know, because the content of the book is just so IMPORTANT. The next time I hear someone say, "Oh, I only need 5 hours of sleep a night," I will tell them how wrong they are and shove this book in their face. Seriously, everyone needs to READ THIS BOOK!!! Our society holds some really erroneous beliefs about sleep, from how much you should be getting a night, to whether you really have insomnia (you probably don't). Walker addresses everything you ever wanted to know about sleep and more in this book. I will be listening to this again soon.

The best book on sleep bar none
I absolutely hated this book for the first number of chapters. Both the narrator and the content (as applicable) seemed pretentious, dry, and lacking in anything of interest. However, it got so much better as I progressed through the book and eventually I came to view this as the best "sleep book" that I've ever read. I listen to a lot of podcasts on health, sleep and related content, and yet I learned a lot in this book that I never knew about sleep related issues.
I highly recommend that everyone read this book and I've purchased copies for many people that I know already. The content in this book can dramatically help improve the life of almost anyone.

One of my favorite nonfiction reads of 2017
I had been avoiding reading a book on what lack of sleep does to a person because I figured it the news would not be good and I sleep so badly, I just didn't want to know. But I heard the author on NPR and it sounded so interesting, I got it.
The news was worse than I thought! Nevertheless, it was so fascinating, full of such interesting information, I'm glad I read/listened to it. It's one of the few books that I'd say, "Everyone should read this." For those who can manage to get a decent night's sleep but think 5 or 6 hours is enough--this might change their minds.

However, there are unnatural pauses after every second or third word. This causes a very very incoherent listening experience.

Good content, inadequate reading
Story: 5 starts Reading: 1 star
The Story
The content is updated, well organized and clear, yet not too simplistic. The previous time that I read about the science of sleep was almost three decades ago, and after listening to Matthew Walker's audio-book, I realized that these three decades had been very productive for sleep researchers.
The Reading
On the other hand, The reading is problematic and has some problems which seriously spoil the reading experience. First, it is very monotonous, and lacks the necessary vocal excitement that is so much needed for the delivery of an exciting scientific information. This may imply that the reader is not really interested in the fascinating story, and the result is that I had some difficulties keeping my concentration an found myself pressing the '30 seconds back' button repeatedly.
My conclusion is that it is best if scientists would read their own books, just like in the lectures of "The Great Courses".

Wow, should have read this years ago...
It is amazing how Matt Walker takes these new studies and forms them into data we can learn from. Data that is not dry and mind-numbing but interesting and wants you to listen to sections over to really soak in that information. After reading this book and am much more driven to protect my sleep time and keep a schedule. And I must say that my life daily stability is much more even, that my pulls from memory and learning is becoming better even though I am aging and that effect on memories.
So I encourage you, that if you are reading this, to get this book and value yourself enough to take this topic seriously so you protect something that you can not get back.

Before this I was ignorant
As a scientist myself I loved listening to this. It has changed a lot of my habits around sleep. Also it's given me some hope for Alzheimer's which my grandmother had.
Before this book I was ignorant of the impact of sleep. During the course of reading it I've changed my habits and honestly feel a non placebo benifit

The importance of sleep has blown my mind
I never knew sleep was so paramount to my health until now. Before today I knew a lack of sleep was unhealthy but now I know why consistent sleep and rest are vital to healthy living.

Dry as a popcorn fart
Great book as far as information. But every lesson is dragged on so far there could be an 8 episode Netflix series for each reason why you need more sleep.
I bought the book and tried reading it on my own. It’s better but not by much. With the combination of the narrator of this audiobook and the book, the goal of the author is being achieved. I fell asleep every time without fail. Same as that Daniel Kahneman book, thinking fast and slow; it doesn’t need to be as long as it is. I’ll finish the book when someone comes out with a summary.

We don't sleep enough. We must. Here's how.
This book contains pretty much everything about sleep: its amazing benefits, our lack of it, what happens when we don't have enough sleep and how to fix it. Some takeaways:
- Dreams and sleep stretch our imagination, boost our IQ, memory, sex drive, physical capabilities and overall health.
- Sleep deprivation gives you cancer, in addition to a bunch of other diseases.
- Give yourself 7-9 hrs of opportunity to sleep every night
- You can't make up over the weekend for the sleep you didn't have over the week
- Your bedroom should be 1-2 degrees colder when you're about to sleep. Taking a shower before bed also helps.
- Take a short nap in the early afternoon if you can, like a siesta.
- Stop getting caffeine at least 8 hours before bed
The narration was very slow and sleep-inducing. I don't know if this was on purpose but it was a bit boring at times.

The title is misleading
Nevertheless it’s a great book about the importance of a good night sleep, an people should really know more about. I’d just have been more interested in the “why” as suggested by the title.

Appendix (last 5 minutes) is the most valuable
All the book is about the justification (experiences, stories, experiments made and published in Papers) about why we should sleep 8h. But the recommendations about how to do it, how to sleep, are all summarized in the Appendix (only 5 minutes long).
And don't look for optimization. There is no trick on how to sleep like 8h in only 6 or anything like that. It's only the 5 minutes advice about how to properly sleep the 8 regular hours.
If you are in the academic industry, you are studying or studied a PhD, then maybe you find it very interesting.

imperative listening for a full life
ignorance on sleep translates into a slow constant drain of your life. listen in for scientific and expert explanations. spoiler: get to sleep 8+ hours and u mite skip the book for a good novel. but all tortured souls - assiredly the great majority - better start an improved sleep regime.

The book is full of inaccuracies and mistakes
Before doing some research on the book, I was fascinated by it and thoroughly enjoyed it, like no other book in a long time. I even recommended it to a friend of mine, who got suspicious of the book and researched about it. He then send me an article about the mistakes in the book, and there were a lot of them, although the author of the article(Alexey Guzey) only covered mostly the first chapter.
The danger of sleeping less than 8 hours gets systematicly overstated and the relationship between sleep and longevity and between sleep and cancer is strongly misrepresented. He even leaves parts of a graphic out to match his point of view. I assume the author didn't intentionality try to misrepresent facts, but he didn't try to factcheck and was overenthusiastic about the effect of sleep. Please read more on https://guzey.com/books/why-we-sleep/#summary
I stopped reading the book, because I don't know how much of it is accurate, which was hard because I really liked the book and the topic.

Super Inhalt, teilweise langatmig

BEWARE! good book but dont read if not healthy!
its been 2-3 years now since i heard the book.
its a good one, with many interesting facts and stories. BUT! i was going through some trouble at the time and this book was what really kicked off some SERIOUS insomnia problems for me. Before, I slept mostly ok with some stress related sleep problems. after it - knowing about the devastating effects of not sleeping well - i had real anxiety about sleeping. it was a serious problem for two years, and it got better only recently.
Its not the authors fault, but if youre not in a good state right now, dont read the book and take this summary: sleep is important. VERY important. try to get enough (7,5-8h) of it at all costs.

Life changing.
If you constantly feel tired, read this book. I thought I was getting enough sleep, or rather enough quality sleep, but now, that I’ve changed some habits, I feel so much more refreshed in the mornings. It’s honestly life changing.

could be more concise.
the positive thing is it explains various aspects of sleep from biology to psychology and society. also the section about the history of sleep (from the evolution point of view) was very inspiring.
