There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices.

His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing.

For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking, reading to partying; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over brainstorming in teams. Although they are often labeled "quiet," it is to introverts that we owe many of the great contributions to society--from van Gogh’s sunflowers to the invention of the personal computer.

When Cal Newport coined the term deep work on his popular blog, Study Hacks, in 2012, he found the concept quickly hit a nerve.

Some good ideas, but nothing deep

Description
The first sleep book by a leading scientific expert - Professor Matthew Walker, director of UC Berkeley's Sleep and Neuroimaging Lab - reveals his groundbreaking exploration of sleep, explaining how we can harness its transformative power to change our lives for the better.
Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.
But an explosion of scientific discoveries in the last 20 years has shed new light on this fundamental aspect of our lives. Now, preeminent neuroscientist and sleep expert Matthew Walker gives us a new understanding of the vital importance of sleep and dreaming. Among so many other things, within the brain, sleep enriches our ability to learn, memorize, and make logical decisions. It recalibrates our emotions, restocks our immune system, fine-tunes our metabolism, and regulates our appetite. Dreaming mollifies painful memories and creates a virtual reality space in which the brain melds past and present knowledge to inspire creativity.
Walker answers important questions about sleep: How do caffeine and alcohol affect sleep? What really happens during REM sleep? Why do our sleep patterns change across a lifetime? How do common sleep aids affect us, and can they do long-term damage? Charting cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs and synthesizing decades of research and clinical practice, Walker explains how we can harness sleep to improve learning, mood, and energy levels; regulate hormones; prevent cancer, Alzheimer's, and diabetes; slow the effects of aging; increase longevity; enhance the education and lifespan of our children, and boost the efficiency, success, and productivity of our businesses. Clear-eyed, fascinating, and immensely accessible, Why We Sleep is the crucial account on sleep that will forever change listeners' minds on the subject.

Overdone!
The author of this book is a sleep science researcher. His work is intended to stress the importance of sleep and its benefits. Though his claims are probably not unfounded, they appear excessive as sleep is presented as a universal remedy that can prevent cancer, heart ailments, Alzheimer’s disease, etc. It is also held out as the essential contributor to creativity, memory and even physical prowess, both for athletes and musicians. Given the countless repetitions in the book, many may find that such urging is counter productive rather than convincing. In addition, the author strangely states that lost sleep cannot be recovered. Why, then, should anyone bother to endeavour to improve his sleep hygiene if he is already doomed? The book was also written before Fitbit type trackers were common so they are not discussed as such, only anticipated with a surprising assertion that they should be linked to bedroom thermostats. For specific help with respect to better sleeping, please note the author refers his readers to the National Sleep Foundation.

interesting but somewhat repetitive
Liked the idea of a sleep index for employees based on sleep tracker data, that you can redeem as € bonuses or time off. You need 2 features: quantity (7 to 9h sleep) and consistency (every night). This, combined with some of the actionable tips to improve your sleep, would make for a valuable product in my opinion.

I recommend this to EVERYONE
I first noticed Why We Sleep on Audible's homepage under "New in Non-Fiction" and clicked on it simply because I saw it was narrated by one of my favorite narrators, Steve West. The subtitle "Unlocking the power of sleep and dreams" makes this sound like it would be full of watered down science and generic advice about getting a good night's sleep or interpreting your dreams. That is NOT what this book is, thankfully. Matthew Walker presents study after study explaining why we need sleep for every aspect of our lives (to prevent disease, to help remember things, to look more attractive, etc.). I was fascinated for all 14 hours of this book. I've recommended it to every person I know, because the content of the book is just so IMPORTANT. The next time I hear someone say, "Oh, I only need 5 hours of sleep a night," I will tell them how wrong they are and shove this book in their face. Seriously, everyone needs to READ THIS BOOK!!! Our society holds some really erroneous beliefs about sleep, from how much you should be getting a night, to whether you really have insomnia (you probably don't). Walker addresses everything you ever wanted to know about sleep and more in this book. I will be listening to this again soon.

Wow, should have read this years ago...
It is amazing how Matt Walker takes these new studies and forms them into data we can learn from. Data that is not dry and mind-numbing but interesting and wants you to listen to sections over to really soak in that information. After reading this book and am much more driven to protect my sleep time and keep a schedule. And I must say that my life daily stability is much more even, that my pulls from memory and learning is becoming better even though I am aging and that effect on memories. So I encourage you, that if you are reading this, to get this book and value yourself enough to take this topic seriously so you protect something that you can not get back.

The best book on sleep bar none
I absolutely hated this book for the first number of chapters. Both the narrator and the content (as applicable) seemed pretentious, dry, and lacking in anything of interest. However, it got so much better as I progressed through the book and eventually I came to view this as the best "sleep book" that I've ever read. I listen to a lot of podcasts on health, sleep and related content, and yet I learned a lot in this book that I never knew about sleep related issues.
I highly recommend that everyone read this book and I've purchased copies for many people that I know already. The content in this book can dramatically help improve the life of almost anyone.

One of my favorite nonfiction reads of 2017
I had been avoiding reading a book on what lack of sleep does to a person because I figured it the news would not be good and I sleep so badly, I just didn't want to know. But I heard the author on NPR and it sounded so interesting, I got it.
The news was worse than I thought! Nevertheless, it was so fascinating, full of such interesting information, I'm glad I read/listened to it. It's one of the few books that I'd say, "Everyone should read this." For those who can manage to get a decent night's sleep but think 5 or 6 hours is enough--this might change their minds.

Good content, inadequate reading
Story: 5 starts Reading: 1 star The Story The content is updated, well organized and clear, yet not too simplistic. The previous time that I read about the science of sleep was almost three decades ago, and after listening to Matthew Walker's audio-book, I realized that these three decades had been very productive for sleep researchers. The Reading On the other hand, The reading is problematic and has some problems which seriously spoil the reading experience. First, it is very monotonous, and lacks the necessary vocal excitement that is so much needed for the delivery of an exciting scientific information. This may imply that the reader is not really interested in the fascinating story, and the result is that I had some difficulties keeping my concentration an found myself pressing the '30 seconds back' button repeatedly. My conclusion is that it is best if scientists would read their own books, just like in the lectures of "The Great Courses".

Highly Recommended
There is a nice PDF for this book with charts and graphs that are quite useful to review before (or during) listening to this book. Clearly the author has strong views about the importance of sleep, and perhaps goes a little overboard with his passion. Nevertheless there is a lot of interesting, important, and actionable information about sleep in this book. I learned quite a bit, relearned quite a bit, and was convinced about the importance of good quality sleep. I would highly recommend this to anyone, particularly anyone with any trouble sleeping. Even if you sleep really well, this book is interesting to learn about the powerful effects of poor quality sleep on keds, doctors, drivers, and others. The narration is completely excellent with good clarity, good pacing, and very good energy.

Most educational
This is by far the most educational book on sleep. The only way to improve your sleep pattern is to master the science behind. Besides giving the importance of sleep for health, the book also approaches several mysteries about dreaming and sleep which keep the book entertaining. However, do not buy unless particulary interested in sleep. But if you are, this is the best.

We don't sleep enough. We must. Here's how.
This book contains pretty much everything about sleep: its amazing benefits, our lack of it, what happens when we don't have enough sleep and how to fix it. Some takeaways: - Dreams and sleep stretch our imagination, boost our IQ, memory, sex drive, physical capabilities and overall health. - Sleep deprivation gives you cancer, in addition to a bunch of other diseases. - Give yourself 7-9 hrs of opportunity to sleep every night - You can't make up over the weekend for the sleep you didn't have over the week - Your bedroom should be 1-2 degrees colder when you're about to sleep. Taking a shower before bed also helps. - Take a short nap in the early afternoon if you can, like a siesta. - Stop getting caffeine at least 8 hours before bed The narration was very slow and sleep-inducing. I don't know if this was on purpose but it was a bit boring at times.

The title is misleading
Nevertheless it’s a great book about the importance of a good night sleep, an people should really know more about. I’d just have been more interested in the “why” as suggested by the title.

Appendix (last 5 minutes) is the most valuable
All the book is about the justification (experiences, stories, experiments made and published in Papers) about why we should sleep 8h. But the recommendations about how to do it, how to sleep, are all summarized in the Appendix (only 5 minutes long). And don't look for optimization. There is no trick on how to sleep like 8h in only 6 or anything like that. It's only the 5 minutes advice about how to properly sleep the 8 regular hours. If you are in the academic industry, you are studying or studied a PhD, then maybe you find it very interesting.

Super Inhalt, teilweise langatmig

imperative listening for a full life
ignorance on sleep translates into a slow constant drain of your life. listen in for scientific and expert explanations. spoiler: get to sleep 8+ hours and u mite skip the book for a good novel. but all tortured souls - assiredly the great majority - better start an improved sleep regime.

Went from bad sleeper to insomniac after hearing
This book is not suited for anxious people like me. I first bought it hoping it could solve some issues with my sleep but since it is mostly telling how bad sleep depravation is for my health, I just get more anxious and can't sleep anymore

The book is full of inaccuracies and mistakes
Before doing some research on the book, I was fascinated by it and thoroughly enjoyed it, like no other book in a long time. I even recommended it to a friend of mine, who got suspicious of the book and researched about it. He then send me an article about the mistakes in the book, and there were a lot of them, although the author of the article(Alexey Guzey) only covered mostly the first chapter. The danger of sleeping less than 8 hours gets systematicly overstated and the relationship between sleep and longevity and between sleep and cancer is strongly misrepresented. He even leaves parts of a graphic out to match his point of view. I assume the author didn't intentionality try to misrepresent facts, but he didn't try to factcheck and was overenthusiastic about the effect of sleep. Please read more on https://guzey.com/books/why-we-sleep/#summary I stopped reading the book, because I don't know how much of it is accurate, which was hard because I really liked the book and the topic.

For getting to know the importance of sleep.
This is not a book to find solutions for good sleep (even though they are provided for 5mins at the end). It's more a book to see the big influence sleep has on everything in our life, especially our well being. Didn't quite like the speaker but one gets used to it.
