LECTURE MAGISTRALE

It's a novel whose qualities are so varied and so diverse that it's difficult to write a shot review.
First of all, the characters are remarkably well-characterized in a novel that takes its time and shows us the characters in depth and over time. All are complex (except perhaps the father and victim), displaying great qualities of heart, a nobility of soul, essential metaphysical questions, and sometimes unbearable flaws. Even Alexei isn't completely unified or simply a good character.
This applies to the four brothers, but also to the heroines, the children, the secondary characters...
The ambivalence of the characters is the foundation of their great humanity.
But the plot itself is extremely well-crafted, as captivating as it is a crime novel and a courtroom novel.
The story is constructed through a series of scenes, dialogues captured as if in real time, possessing the power and nuances of authentic exchanges. There are also narrative retrospective moments filled with anecdotes that enrich the characters' experiences.
Some scenes are particularly memorable, even though they are all very intense and sometimes climactic. The lawyer's closing argument, for example, not to mention the Inquisitor's dialogue, and some of Alexei's lines are striking. Of course, the pathos is reached, and the reader's heart sinks, perhaps even tears, but this emotion is coupled with admiration for some sublime moments.
This incredibly high-quality novel is perfectly enhanced by Pierre-François Garrel's interpretation.
The voices, the nuances, the shouts, the language, the insults, and even the hysteria of certain exchanges are rendered in an extraordinary way.
The only drawback to this audio version is that the soundtrack hasn't been correctly edited by the editor, and the sound of pages turning and swallowing sounds can be heard quite often, or in some passages. This is very unfortunate given the quality of the actor's work. It's not enough to hinder the enjoyment of this masterpiece.
The best novel I've ever read
