Description

The galaxy is burning. The Emperor's loyal primarchs prepare to do battle with Warmaster Horus and his turncoat Legions on the black sand of Isstvan.

Such dark times herald new and yet more terrible things still to come, and when Astropath Kai Zulane unwittingly learns a secret that threatens to tip the balance of the war, he is forced to flee for his life. Alongside a mysterious band of renegades, he plunges into the deadly underworld of Terra itself, hunted like a criminal by those he once trusted. In the face of betrayal, Kai must decide where his own loyalties lie and whether some truths should be buried forever.

hard to get into.

the book turned out to be really good, but i found it hard to get into because of the story and how long it took to build up, it did however get very interesting and enjoyable. narration is very good.

Wow!

Easily one of the best in the Horus Heresy series. The author does a great job of making the listener (reader) develop an attachment to the tragic characters. You won't be disappointed in this book.

twists and turns

I will admit I started getting lost in the connection between the different characters in this book, and for a while I was lost to where it was going, but it all came together very well and as a whole this book is solid.

Unique group

It’s a good read overall. There are a few underlining storylines and they make it worth it and very unique.

One of the great reads of the series.

Fascinating story of the Empire on the brink and the terrible future that awaits. Full of complex characters sent spinning by the momentous tides of fate. One of the great reads of the series.

Painful

McNeil again displays that, while he is prolific, he certainly is not the strongest author working for Black Library.

This story suffers from bland descriptions, awkward shifts between present and past tenses, weak characters destined only to die without serving any real meaning and one of the most sleepy and dull segments of “bolter porn” ever put to pen.

And that’s too bad because the exchanges between the the main character and his regicide opponent are fantastic and so painfully heart breaking that they deserved a far better vehicle than this story.

not my favorite story but reading was fantastic

Graham McNeil has written better in this series but the subject matter is a tough one too really get behind if you are a big horus heresy fan they are tertiary characters but do come along again later in the series. I guess this is just a bit deeper into the back story to make everything seem even more machiavellian.
