Description

A Warhammer Horror novel.

An Astra Militarum colonel, broken by war and loss, returns to his childhood home to take up the mantle of Planetary Governor - but horrors await in the House of Malveil that will make his experiences of war seem like child's play....

Listen to it because: Haunted house stories are a staple of the horror genre. In a grim, dark future where much worse things than ghosts can anchor themselves to reality, a haunted house can do more than just scare you…

The story: In a bleak corner of the city of Valgaast, the House of Malveil awaits. A place of darkness, its halls throb with a sinister history. Its rooms are filled with malice. Its walls echo with pain. Now it stirs eagerly with the approach of an old heir - Colonel Maeson Strock of the Astra Militarum has returned home to his ancestral mansion. He is a man broken, both by the horrors of war and by personal loss, and he has come home to take up the mantle of Planetary Governor. He hopes he can purge his home world of political corruption and reforge connections with his estranged children. He hopes he can rebuild his life.

Malveil will feast on these dreams. Strock believes he has seen the worst of the galaxy’s horrors. Malveil will show him how wrong he is.

Written by David Annandale.

Got so into it!

Really loved this book. The writing is super cool and the narration is great. Perfect creepiness for the Halloween holiday.

what a ghost would be in 40k

Definitely a good mix of classic horror and the grimness of 40k. It seems predictable in the middle but make sure you keep going. you won't see the end coming. It does a great job of describing what a touch of chaos will to ordinary men.

40k and Horror are made for each other

I always thought that the grimdark world of Warhammer 40k could use more proper horror, and the House of Night and Chain delivers just that.

Disappointing, lost potential

I do realize this book was labeled as "Warhammer Horror", however I think there was the potential for a better political thriller set in the war-hammer universe that was never realized. I was drawn into the initial plot of a soldier who inherits the Governorship of his home planet and has to return home to root out corruption. The world is no longer sending its supplies to the empire because greedy local oligarchs are diverting the industrial output to the black market for personal profit. The main character is tasked with restoring his planet's production output or risk having his throne seized by Imperial authorities. The effort to restore honesty to the planet's industry is opposed by a powerful councilor and her other political allies. The governor must press forward with his plan to end the black market while facing assassination attempts on himself and his supporters. Unfortunately the horror element had to rear its ugly head and abort the promising early plot. The governors mansion is haunted because of past dark family secret. While the political machinations were interesting, the "haunted house" was tedious and dull. It works on the main character through a series of mind-altering dream sequences. I hate dream sequences in books! Although I finished the book, I barely payed attention while listening to the ending. I wasn't particularly willing to try to figure out if what was happening was real (in the context of the book) or another part of a dream sequence.

Decent

So the story was decent, a good horror narrative. Yet the narrator was not the typical Black Library standard. He mispronounced crucial things, lacked emphasis on important parts, and generally I had to work to pay attention to the story as it tended to meld together into background noise at the slightest distraction. Disappointing considering the importance of subject as it helps us understand what happens on some of the million worlds of the Imperium.

Excellent addition to the collection

This was one of the first true Warhammer Horror books that GW has produced that was not a rehash of some older authors work “I.e. sad copy of masque of the red death renamed” a re-release of some 80s novel (those were good, but hardly original) or did not just come out and say what the horrific creature (or chaos god) was involved. This actually captured the fear of the unknown, even at the end you are questioning what was going on and what was the outcome. Excellent read.

To predictable

I dont usually read horror, as I generally dont gele well with horror media in general, so im no expert, but the story in this book is to predictable for my tastes. Except for 1 or 2 small twists i could almost see where the story was going the whole time. I guess there is a sense of cosmic horror in that "no matter what you do, the end will be the same" kinda thing, and the base story is entertaining, but ultimately forgettable

A surprisingly strong horror story

The tone of this book, like several people have mentioned does come off like The Haunting of Hill House, but it really nails a creepy atmosphere and a strong story. The protagonists loss of reality twists how the story comes off, and it leaves the listener questioning what really happens until the end! A great listen.

Great story; bad performance

This is a great story, but I’m just not a fan of the narrator. He does a decent job for the main character, but every other character was awfully done.

Enter Malveil, You'll Only Be Here Forever

An excellent tale of madness, growing paranoia and occult powers unfolding. Annandale has crafted a wonderful first person narrative whose unreliable narrator spins his circles like a maelstrom drawing the reader deeper into the mysteries of the haunted mansion. What is real, what a fantasy? As dream and reality blur together, the book becomes ever harder to put aside. Dugald Bruce-Lockhart does an exceptional job narrating the audiobook. His tone and pace perfectly encapsulate the protagonist's emotional and mental state - from strong confidence over growing unease up to stark fear - and further contribute to the horror.I David Annnadale has long been one of my favorite authors of horror in Black Library's stable, and you'll certainly find familiar themes of faith and madness here. The Warhammer Horror imprint appears to finally let him spread his wings to their full potential. The House of Night and Chain proves his talents yet again, and I'll eagerly anticipate his next Horror outing.

If you like Horror, you will love this!

I was sceptical at first, my previouse experiences with Warhammer Horror were disapointing, but this was great. It had me hooked the entire time. The story takes its time to introduce the charackters and this is so important, we get to know the protagonist and want him to succeed. The story is told from his point of view. So when the story and the horror start to ramp up we are invested. And once it gets going it isn't slowing down again. The Speaker does a great job here, he gives the story an ever increasing sense of urgency and tension while never going to far. The Warhammer Elements put a refreshing Spin on the classic haunted House Story and this Book does the "Grimdark" Nature of the 40k Setting justice.

Nimmt Fahrt auf

Ein spannender und unerwarteter Abstieg in den Wahnsinn und das Chaos. Brauchte aber seine Zeit.
