Description

Recalled from the Great Crusade after Ullanor, Rogal Dorn and the VIIth Legion were appointed as the Emperor's praetorians - but only after the Warmaster's treachery was revealed did the full extent of that sacred duty become apparent.

Now, the Solar System comes under attack for the first time since the war began, and many of the seemingly impregnable defences wrought by the Imperial Fists prove inadequate. With all eyes fixed firmly upon this new threat beyond the gates of Terra, who in turn will protect Dorn from the enemy within?

not the end, but maybe the beginning of the end

The enemy are at the gates and amongst the loyal. They are here, have always been here. Its the way they fight, the alpha legion have planned for every contingent, anticipated every angle, devised every move.... that is except for Rogal Dorn. This is as good a book that has ever come out of a board game. There's intrigue, action, and character. The horus heresy can be a money grubbing mess at times, but this one stands out like a Ruby in Dorns armor.

Strap in and fortify your position.

VII

I love the fists and I have a better appreciation for the Alpha legion now. I like how ambiguous the ending is.

Want more like this

The amount of time that it took to get to the finale was filled with fantastic Alpa Legion tom-foolery, and I enjoyed all of the twists that this books three st me.

Understanding tactics.

The story is well told but as with all these books, it is tactically silly.

I am Alpharius?

Awesome spy story and background, never much cared for Dorn until now and the book puts the events of Legion into perspective, in that Alpha Legion is losing their minds. Book description didn't do this one justice, not what was expected and that's for the better. Easily somewhere in top ten for the series.

The Alpha Legion strikes at Terra

The Imperial Fists stand sentinel over Terra. For several years, since the Warmaster's uprising began, they have been fortifying the defenses of the Sol system. Now an enemy strikes at those defenses with a plan that began long before the Heresy started.

This novel focuses on the Alpha Legion and Imperial Fists. The primary story involves the leader of Dorn's Huscarls and mimics the formation of Malcador's agents. There are several flashbacks to events over the history of the Fists.

The other side of the main story is told from the broken perception of Alpha Legion elements. True to their nature, not even they know the truth of their situation until their mission parameters call for that knowledge. And, perhaps, not even then.

The performance was well done and on par with other novels performed by Mr. Keeble. The novel flows well and I enjoyed the story. Mr. French does well providing some background for the Imperial Fists and showing elements of how the Alpha Legion operates. Characters are well formed but I did find Caestus as being a bit uneven. That may have been intentional to demonstrate his relative youth and frame of mind, though.

Overall, I enjoyed the novel. Both featured Legions have had limited time in the spotlight in the series thus far so it was nice to see them both shine.

Very interesting writing style

I really like the way John French cycles through different perspectives as events progress. It's cool to listen to other characters through each other's eyes. Jonathan Keeble puts on yet another great reading. I recommend listening to Crimson Fist before you listen to this.

And now a murder mystery...

This is a different sort of Heresy novel and better for it. Some of John French at his best and Keeble’s narration is top notch. Not a great starter novel because it demands a lot of familiarity with names, backstories, and the like, but once you get a few chapters in it flows very well.

***minor spoilers***

The pacing is excellent. The beginning whips you up in a whirlwind and then it’s a slow burn that matches the slow and steady movements of the Fists with the sudden and unpredictable actions of the sons of the Hydra. These opening steps of the war in the solar system are uncertain and halting because its not clear who’s calling the tune until the final act.

The backstory and lore leave you wanting more. The Selenar and the other lunar cults, the laborers and smugglers of the solar system, Dorn and his First: all of these are teased out and draw your attention as much as the story. That they advance the story so well is a testament to French’s ability.

The whole flavor is a welcome change. I love a good hack and slash or dakka dakka, but the core narrative of three very different characters trying to outfox the foxes was very engaging and lent the fights much more weight because it explained why they were necessary and didn’t just give them window dressing.

What a twist!

Actually, I got spoiled by a youtube video about what would happen on this story and I read thinking I already know what will happen in the end. But then I actually got it wrong and I was pleasantly surprised of the outcome.

I like the Imperial Fists now lol

This book is really good and gives the Alpha Legion a lot of love even if the ending bums me out. I didn't like the Imperial Fists until now but I guess I'll move Dark Angels to the new least favorite legion.
