Geralt of Rivia is a Witcher, a man whose magic powers and lifelong training have made him a brilliant fighter and a merciless assassin. In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

Histoire
Prince of Thorns is the first volume in a powerful new epic fantasy trilogy, original, absorbing and challenging. Before the thorns taught me their sharp lessons and bled weakness from me I had but one brother, and I loved him well. But those days are gone and what is left of them lies in my mother's tomb. Now I have many brothers, quick with knife and sword, and as evil as you please. We ride this broken empire and loot its corpse.
Description
Geralt of Rivia is on a mission to save his ward, Ciri, and with her the world, in this third novel in the best-selling Witcher series that inspired the Netflix show and video games.
The Wizards Guild has been shattered by a coup and, in the uproar, Geralt was seriously injured. The Witcher is supposed to be a guardian of the innocent, a protector of those in need, a defender against powerful and dangerous monsters that prey on men in dark times.
But now that dark times have fallen upon the world, Geralt is helpless until he has recovered from his injuries.
While war rages across all of the lands, the future of magic is under threat and those sorcerers who survive are determined to protect it. It's an impossible situation in which to find one girl - Ciri, the heiress to the throne of Cintra, has vanished - until a rumour places her in the Niflgaard court, preparing to marry the Emperor.
Injured or not, Geralt has a rescue mission on his hands.

Peter Kenny brings this world to life.
So far in the story I can not stress enough how much Peter Kenny's talent adds to these stories. Every character is immediately recognisable which makes the conversations between all the different characters so easy to follow and so much more immersive.

Better than previous books, BUT....
It's better, as the headline suggest, better than the previous Witcher books. Better written/translates; Better story and the performance is top notch, BUT the sound engineering is still poor. Like the two previous books this book is also very quiet. And with alot of whispering in the book it's quite hard to hear. One might think it's my age or somerhing, but no, only these Witcher books has such low volume.

Fillers and loss of story, sometimes
This book was ok, it just felt dragged out sometimes, like the vampire part.
The performance of Peter Kenny is 5/5, the story made me give it only 3 stars.
Plus "baptism of fire" mentioned a bit too many times, especially towards the end (made me think of CinemaCins and there was a "ding" sound for every time these words are spoken) was distracting. It makes you wonder what does Andrzej mean until the very end (before the uneeded book 4 preview). Was this it? No, how about this one? And so on...

The characters are what really does it for me in the Witcher series, and Baptism of Fire introduces the arguably most colourful ones so far (besides the core cast). A fantastic listen
