  • Pre-Planning for War | | Ukraine Nonprofits Under Fire [Ep: 6]
    Apr 28 2022

Sandra is back this episode with baby Ila. Joshua House moves forward with building new homes in the warzone while Jim and Sandy plan to cross the border to Poland in search of building supplies. US officials Blinken and Austin visit Ukraine and discuss establishing the US ebassay just hours before 5 railway stations were bombed by Russia.

Our guest today, Cassandra Welch, Communications Specialist at Catholic Relief Services, speaks to the generosity of the Moldovan people. Even though they are one of the poorest countries in Europe, they welcome Ukrainian refugees with open arms. Catholic Relief Services knows the trauma of war and crisis after helping over 120 million people across  5 continents. Through pre-planning for times like this, they were able to set up refugee camps through their global partner network and not only help the refugees immediate needs, but also their long-term needs like mental health and working through the psychological trauma of war.

  • Joshua House Update from Ukraine | Ukraine Nonprofits Under Fire [Ep: 5]
    Apr 21 2022

Colton Curry takes over for his wife and new mother Sandra in this episode of Ukraine Nonprofits Under Fire. David Higgins and Colton Curry praise Moldova for taking in an influx of refugees as yet another airstrike hits Lviv, just hours after Colton and Sandra departed, killing 7 and injuring 11. Despite all this, Colton and Sandra hold on to hope along with the rest of the Ukrainian population. Community continues to be at the forefront of everyone's mind as they fight for their freedom.

David Higgins has the pleasure of speaking with Jim McCann, founder of Joshua House, as today’s guest. Jim confirms Colton’s sentiment of hope as he talks about house Joshua House is starting construction in the middle of a war zone in preparation of future need. A commercial kitchen is in store for this home to feed to the IDP’s (internally displaced people) in addition to housing them. Jim and David end the conversation on a sweet note coupled with a cry for help. Jim gives us a glimpse of the spectacular work that Joshua House is doing to turn the lives around of severely abused children in times of war and provides a true avenue we can use to support their mission.

  • Crisis Management to Managing Success - Tracy Vanderneck - PHIL COM [Ep: 12]
    Apr 19 2022

David Higgins and Tracy Vanderneck discuss a pervasive issue that many nonprofits find themselves in on a daily basis: Firefighting. No, not the red fire truck type. This type of firefighting comes in the form of future planning neglect, ununified internal and external storytelling, and trying to operate in a vacuum. Tracy dives into how nonprofit leaders can stop managing crises, and move to managing success. As a chronic blogger and advocate of knowledge-sharing, Tracy packs this podcast with valuable, actionable steps nonprofit leaders can use to go from a heads down mentality to a forward thinking and systems driven organization.

Tracy has 25 years of experience in fundraising, nonprofit leadership, and business development. She holds a Master of Science in Management (MSM) in Non-Profit Leadership, a Graduate Certificate in Teaching & Learning, is a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE), and is an Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Master Trainer. Needless to say, Tracy knows a thing or two about fundraising.

Tracy and David highlight innovative nonprofit fundraising methods that yielded great success. From pivoting to online cooking classes, a 12k car wash event, to a 100+ million dollar donation, they breakdown how small to midsize nonprofits can better utilize their employees and donor data to make forward thinking decisions that can help remove the daily crisis management mindset.

Tune into this week’s nonprofit podcast featuring Tracy Vanderneck on how to move from crisis management to managing success.

  • Ukraine Community Holds Strong | Ukraine Nonprofits Under Fire [Ep: 4]
    Apr 14 2022

David Higgins and Sandra Curry highlight the work that Dr. Trina Helderman is doing over at Medical Teams International in Ukraine. Encouraging news comes in the form of an overly generous community aiding Ukraine through supplies, volunteers, and financial support. Trina mentions in the last 14 years of volunteering and deployment, she has never seen the number of volunteers outpouring in the local Ukraine community through churches, organizations, teachers, doctors, nurses, cooks, etc. in this time of crisis.

While this is good news, Dr. Helderman also gave a sobering look at how there may be enough supplies, but there is no way to get these supplies to the people in need. Russia continues to thwart supply chain efforts and block aid corridors designed to deliver medical and hygiene kits. The Red Cross has lost a number of it’s vehicles to Russian bombing and hyjackings. Help People, a nonprofit, lost 9 buses in the Donbas region to a Russian military attack and the drivers’ whereabouts are currently unknown, assumed kidnapped.

We wrap up this episode with an update from Sandra and Colton Curry’s family plans and how their little one may have a different idea on the timing of entering into their war-torn city.

Stay tuned for more nonprofits making an exceptional difference in Ukraine.

  • Ethical Digital Marketing - With Senny Boone - Association of National Advertisers [Ep: 11]
    Apr 12 2022

David Higgins and Senny Boone pick up the hot topic of data privacy during fundraising on this week's episode of The Nonprofit Podcast. In the world of digital advertising, something that Senny is well acquainted with as the SVP of ANA (Association of National Advertisers), marketers often find themselves at the crossroads of ethical practices and donor acquisition tactics. Senny sheds some light on the topic by laying out the best practices nonprofit leaders are using to stay ethically inbounds as well as staying aggressive and competitive in the world of digital advertising.

Everyone deserves to be treated like a human being. This is no different in the digital advertising space. That is why things like the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003, data stewardship, cookieless landing pages, and the The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) are in place to help marketers stay ethical in their practices. As the common practice of digital marketing continues, Senny highlights some key niches that are coming back like ‘snail mail marketing’ and in-person fundraising events.

Algorithms and formulas can dehumanize us, this week's episode is all about how to put the ‘human’ back in our marketing practices.

  • Small Team Providing Massive Medical Relief | Ukraine Nonprofits Under Fire [Ep: 3]
    Apr 7 2022

This is a special series focusing on nonprofits under fire in Ukraine.

Fundraising Drive: 7 Day Instagram Fundraising Drive April 10th - 17th

David Higgins and Sandra Curry highlight the work that Richard Walden and his team are doing over at Operation USA to open up humanitarian corridors into Ukraine. Despite the obstacles of rising gas prices which create a squeeze on transportation logistics, Belerucian soldiers cutting off supply chains, and the continual bombardment of air strikes into the major cities of Ukraine, Operation USA stays small and agile allowing them to deliver over 12k medical kits to hospitals and recovery centers.

Along that same line, Operation USA has partnered with an LA based doctor to train relief personnel in Ukraine, partnered with the organization Razom (Razom means ‘together’ in Ukrainian) in support of ongoing relief activities, partners at White Pony Express in support of ongoing relief activities, and so much more.

See all they are currently doing here: https://www.opusa.org/developing-supporting-ukrainians/

By the time this episode airs, one more member will have joined the Curry family. Despite the chaos and horror of war, Sandra and Colton are thrilled to introduce their baby into the Joshua House environment. Sandra and Colton will continue to bring weekly updates on the war, so stay tuned!
