Ep 92 - Imagine immigrating to the US as a child, becoming a public health servant, and landing in Puerto Rico during a Zika outbreak. For eldest daughter and first gen Latina Bianca Alba, that's simply been her life thus far.

As the host of This Latina Travels, Bianca inspires all of us to voyage beyond our comfort zone and explore the rest of this huge world. Settling in Puerto Rico was intentional because she finally found "home."

While la Isla del Encanto has many, many challenges—and has even impacted Bianca's decision to remain childfree—the beauty of its culture is unchallenged. Have you ever played childfree bingo? If you're a childfree person, then the answer is probably, sadly, yes.

But for the uninitiated, childfree bingo is a snarky reaction to the irritatingly recurrent questions and responses we receive when we reveal we don't have or want kids. They're so frequent and common that we can reliably check them off a bingo card, if we wanted to.

To be clear, no one enjoys playing this game. It's a stupid game with stupid prizes.

A super common bingo is the question: who will take care of you when you're old?

What's wrong with this question? Don't we have a moral obligation to take care of our elders?

Let's examine where that particular bingo comes from and how we should be thinking about end of life care instead.

Anyone who dares to flout social conventions is typically labeled rebellious. But opt out of the sacrificial act of parenthood? HOW DARE YOU, YOU SELFISH BITCH?!

Let's examine what “selfish” really means, why it’s so often weaponized against childfree women, and how our definitions of self-centered, self-aware, and boundaries get all tangled up in toxic cultural norms.

It's a spectrum, and we're all capable of selfish acts. Parents, too!
