  • 18 - Roger Corman Tribute

Earlier this month, we lost one of the most significant figures in the history of the film industry, Roger Corman.

Corman's illustrious career can't be narrowed down to three films, so we opted to pick three of his directorial films that helped shape American pop culture.

We start with his 1960 gem Little Shop Of Horrors, the gold standard for independent filmmaking and the movie that sparked a decades-long running Broadway play and a very successful musical adaptation.

Corman's passion project, The Intruder, highlights the filmmaker's deeper side as an artist. The raw and horrific film stands out against most of his directorial and production work.

Lastly, we take a trip to the late 1960s with The Trip - a film about… well, tripping. Tripping balls, in fact! LSD!

Join us as Nick and Bella discuss Corman's brilliant work and wildly entertaining stories about the making of these films.

In preparation for the release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Nick & Bella go deep into the wasteland of the Mad Max Universe.

In this episode, we explore the three best films of the franchise (thus far). We start with the scrappy, earnest Ausploitation film that started all the madness: Mad Max.

If indie gems aren’t your bag, but kinky leather outfits are - we’ve got you covered. Mad Max 2 (also known as The Road Warrior) is second on the docket. We explore the layers added to George Miller’s world and the leaps he made in his visual storytelling.

Finally, we finished the episode with the modern classic (yes, we went there) Mad Max: Fury Road. What is there to say? Well… a lot. Listen and let us know what you think!

  • 16 - MORE Great Mother Characters
    May 16 2024

In part two of our Mother's Day Celebration, Nick & Bella discuss three more memorable mother characters.

Claudine, starring the legendary Diahann Carroll, was a boundary-pushing film about a mother of six navigating the welfare system. The film also stars a sweaty, studly James Earl Jones.

Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal knocked it out of the park with her directorial debut, The Lost Daughter. Join Bella as she explores the touchy but important themes in this Olivia Colman drama.

Finally, another actress turned director: the great Penny Marshall's film Riding In Cars With Boys has a little bit of everything. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll dance - and you'll fall in love with Drew Barrymore all over again!

Happy Belated Mother’s Day! We love our mothers, and we love film. So what better way to celebrate than to discuss three unforgettable mother characters in cinema?

In part one of two, Nick & Bella opens the show with a few very heavy but powerful films. Brie Larson’s Academy Award-winning performance in Room is on the docket (yeah… heavy).

We follow that up with what is widely considered to be one of the greatest performances of all time: Gena Rowlands's performance as Mabel in A Woman Under The Influence. (I told you… heavy!)

Thankfully, we ease it up with the crowd favorite Everything, Everywhere, All At Once. Who doesn’t love that movie, right? Right?

Also, throughout the episode, Bella and Nick remember the films they watched repeatedly with their mothers and make a philosophical comparison between tea and coffee.

Join the dangerous minds of Nicholas Ybarra and Bella Efstratis as they discuss one of the 21st century's most fabulous performers, Michelle Pfeiffer.

To celebrate Ms. Pfeiffer's birthday, Nick and Bella explore three wildly entertaining films from Michelle's filmography. In this episode, we discuss titillating Dangerous Liaisons, the outrageously deft Witches of Eastwick, and the unique Jonathan Demme gem Married To The Mob.

And don't worry—show producer Sonja Mereu has Pfeiffer's iconic portrayal of Catwoman covered in Sonja's Movie Minute.

Our only regret is that Michelle Pfeiffer's birthday is not celebrated every month because we just can't get enough. For now, this jam-packed episode will leave you with a case of Pfeiffer Fever!

*This episode contains spoilers. However, the films are over thirty years old, so don't blame us.*
