    Description

Levi Black is at a crossroads. After suffering a loss and breaking up a long-term relationship, he’s looking for a change. When he receives the news he’s inherited a house in York, he seizes the opportunity to begin a new chapter in his life.

However, when he gets there, he finds a house that has never kept its occupants for very long. Either through death or disinclination, no one stays there, and after a few days of living in the place, Levi can understand why. Strange noises can be heard at all hours of the day and night, and disturbing and scary things begin to happen to him. He never believed in ghosts before, but when events take a sinister turn, he knows he must look for help. He finds it in the unlikely form of the blue-haired leader of a ghost tour.

Blue Billings is edgy, beautiful, and lost. Utterly lost. He conceals so many secrets that some days it’s a miracle he remembers his own name. He knows that he should ignore Levi because he threatens the tenuous grip Blue has on survival. But there’s something about the kind-eyed man that draws Blue to him. Something that demands he stay and fight for him when he would normally run in the opposite direction.

As the two men investigate the shocking truth behind Levi’s house, they also discover a deep connection that defies the short length of time they’ve known each other. But when events escalate and his life is on the line, Levi has to wonder if it was wise to trust the mysterious and amazing Blue Billings.

don't fall for a pretty cover

mostly slice-of-life fantasy. the fantasy is having the money to do extensive restoration on an old house and live in a hotel at the same time. takes too long to get into the ghost story. instead obsessively reporting his personal life. kind of boring.

    Entertaining

I mostly enjoyed this book. The good parts are that Levi & Blue seem to be mostly nice people with decent senses of humor. The problem is that humor is generic. Then the decisions they make, or maybe the way their decisions are revealed, in the big action sequence was irritatingly dumb. If they were truly following Blue’s instincts/ perceptions, they should have considered them before deciding things, not after doing the stuff that gets horror movie extras killed. I almost wallbanged it but was nearly done so powered through that scene. It was kind of redeemed, but there were a series of bad choices that didn’t make sense in the order presented. I guessed the villain from the jump but wasn’t exactly reading for that reveal, more for the specifics & the relationship so it was fine, just not tricksy.

If you want a generally pleasant romance with generally decent guys and weird ghosts doing inexplicable things that are only scary or gross a few times, then this book is a fun little jaunt with a little bit of grim.

Levi, generally, is kind of a blank. He has a dead mom & an ex and no other friends which seems odd. He has a solitary job drawing cartoons that seems to pay a lot more than I would expect since he can live 6 months in a hotel & never winces at room service pricing. He’s nice enough, I guess, and one financially comfortable person who is unsettled himself can’t solve the systemic housing problems of a city, but dragging Blue out of a hovel doesn’t give him a personality. He’s a stubborn clueless bumbler who at least can learn when his head gets knocked in, but he feels non-specific to me. Tho an artist who draws, He draws one thing for Blue that is mentioned once and forgotten utterly, when I thought Blue would treasure it, then later uses Blue as a muse without telling him, which I think is not ok for public sales. But his art isn’t integral to the story or character aside from his having a studio at all.

Blue is a little more fleshed out but relies a lot on being a manic pixie dream boy. He has a couple friends & some fans. He can see dead people. I’m not sure if he and Levi have complimentary senses of humor or the same generic sense of humor but it feels like the latter. He stops dying his hair blue and we aren’t told why. (We can guess he doesn’t want to stain things but Levi doesn’t care about stains, so?). He makes some odd decisions generally, that maybe we’re supposed to chalk up to his chronically underfunded background but I felt like his broke-broke background didn’t inform his actions consistently enough to make him feel true.

Worldbuilding: I was hard to tell how many characters were in on the part where the ghosts were real, and I would have liked more certainty. I did like the nods to Supernatural; that was cute.

Steam: Med. There’s some M/M sexytimes on page with copious spitting. But I was annoyed when a scene played out that seemed like Levi was coaching Blue, a former sex worker, on the most basic of basics of bottoming. Basics of emotion, sure, that’s where Blue’s life was lacking. How to relax enough to take one finger? Just wrong. Consent issues were ok but weird because Levi was right to be concerned about power dynamics while Blue has made his own decisions for over a decade and thus is more than capable, but capable or not was reliant on Levi for housing. Wasn’t done badly and points for trying but still kind of missed the point.

Narration: As an American listener, I thought the accents were fine & understandable. An above average job for this narrator. YMMV.

    A spooky paranormal romance!

This is the first book in the Black and Blue Novel series and can be enjoyed as a standalone.

This is very different form Lily Morton's ususal genre and I absolutely loved this.

The world building is engaging and the characters are interesting.

This book has a little something for everyone. Angst, humor, fun and dash of Paranormal horror.

This book had a bit of a spooky vibe to it which drew me in.

Joel Leslie's narration was perfect for this and it was an enjoyable listen overall.

    inheriting a murder house

    Audio: 4.5⭐️

Good, spooky fun. Levi is so adorable and easily flustered, yet a bit snarky. How his grief is handled and incorporated into the narrative feels organic. The only issue I had with him was his (imo) EXTREME denial. I understand being skeptical, and as a scientist, I like to base my thoughts on evidence too but this dude was determined to discount solid evidence. At first it was understandable but then just annoying.

Blue''‘s aloof charm, which hides his loneliness, pain and struggles makes Levi (and me) want to smother him in warmth and love and laughter; watching his wariness slowly fade as he and Levi become friends and he learns to trust is beautiful.

Really enjoyable characters (and secondary characters), good scares/tension building and a nice balance of humor and angst.

    I loved this story

I loved this story, it is captivating and kept me on the edge of my seat. I liked both characters, especially Blue Billings, he is unique, brave and generous, he captured my heart. Levi together with Blue made an adorable couple and I loved following their relationship development. I didn't think the sexy times were super important for development of this amazing story, In my opinion it would have been great with or without the intimate scenes. Narration was ok for me. I had a hard time understanding Blue his accent was so heavy and most of the side characters sounded too similar to my ears. Overall this was a very enjoyable listening experience.

    amazing indeed!

Blue Billings has been my favorite Ebook and now, with Joel Leslie's brilliant narration, it's my favorite Audiobook. Lily Morton has written a book filled with atmosphere, humor, angst, and spine tingling horror to boot! Her characters are interesting, likable, believable, and relatable. Her description of York puts me right in the center of The Shambles in the shadows of the Minster. Please get this book for yourself - you won't regret it!

    Absolutely mysterious and amazing!💙

    5 Blue Rose
    3 Blue Flames
    4 Headphones

Thank the blue heavens, narrator Joel Leslie delivered a once in a blue moon, highly welcomed quirky, dark, mysterious, spooky, and totally fresh performance! His dramatic flair and the fitting voices enhance the personality of the character.

After a multitude of blue-tongued audio experiences, I have to say this one I thoroughly enjoyed. Listeners can expect bouts of explosive laughs and unexpected blue feelings of sadness.

The author has the impressive ability to write about broken characters, but instead of feeling somber, you end up laughing about the ridiculousness of it. But, before you can start questioning yourself about your own dark blue humor. The plot changes and distracts from your own shortcomings.

I definitely recommend this audiobook, it is absolutely mysterious and amazing.

    Happy Listening

    great romance, superbly narrated.

The romance is warm and sweet, with a pleasantly slow build up. The characters are very likeable, and narrated extremely well despite difficult accent switches during dialog. would have given the story 5 stars if there had been any real mystery in the plot. It is obvious from very early who the malevolent ghost actually is. I was really hoping for a difficult puzzle, but even so, I loved this book and will read it again.

    Spirits/spooky/heartfelt

ARC provided by GRR in exchange of an honest review. This book blew me away. It is a bit out of my typical comfort zone but it was amazing. See what I did there, I know, riot. Any way, I loved this book from page one and loved it even more at the end. The story was exciting and insightful, the world building was superb and the MCs were relatable and loveable. The side characters were great as well. There is literally nothing I do not like about this book. I was scared at times, happy, sad, elated, worried and I love that in books. I thought Joel did phenomenal with this and moved up to one of my favorites from him. He has a way of making you feel so much through his narrations and this book only bolstered that.

    Amazing and addicting

I am so in love with Lily Morton’s stories narrated by Joel Leslie!!!
After discovering “Oz” I have heard myself through every available one and hope there will soon be more to feed my addiction 😅
This book had the same quirkiness all of Lily’s books have, combined with a formerly unknown and very well executed creepiness.
I sure hope there will soon be more to enjoy 🥳

    Great!

I liked this book very much, how the story develops and builds up till the end.... Joel Leslie did a great job- again! He is one of my favorite narrators. At the beginning I had some difficulties understanding Blue's Irish accent (I'm a native german speaker), but reading the book while listening helped a lot, so in the end I understood quite well. I love how he does it, the different characters and accents, I mean.
