Description

What did God use to draw a radical, committed unbeliever to himself? Did God take her to an evangelistic rally? Or, since she had her doctorate in literature, did he use something in print? No, God used an invitation to dinner in a modest home, from a humble couple who lived out the Gospel daily, simply, and authentically.

With this story of her conversion as a backdrop, Rosaria Butterfield invites us into her home to show us how God can use this same “radical, ordinary hospitality” to bring the Gospel to our lost friends and neighbors. Such hospitality sees our homes as not our own but as God’s tools for the furtherance of his kingdom as we welcome those who look, think, believe, and act differently from us into our everyday, sometimes messy lives - helping them see what true Christian faith really looks like.

Not What I Expected

I was expecting a simple Christian book that would make me feel like I was on the right track and sharing Jesus. Instead what I got was was a deep and complex living example of sacrificial love. The first few chapters I found myself thinking "who is this person that home schools, adopts, bakes fresh bread for communion weekly, lets people just walk into her house and preps meals of more than 10 people every single night in case anyone just decides to drop by. Who lives like that? If I am honest I have to admit I was initially annoyed by her. I kept thinking "this sounds like rules" but I kept reading and I am so glad I did. I found her story to be insightful and inspiring, she had me questioning my comfortable faith and I was challenged to do more. I found myself imagining my kitchen filled with other people that needed what we had and I started to question why we weren't doing more. If you are ready to be challenged I highly recommend this book.

Excellent and Convicting

If you want to feel good about your current Christian walk and who you are, do not bother listening to this book, but if you are interested in being convicted of the shallowness of your “Christian” hospitality, by all means listen to this excellent book. While I don’t necessarily agree with every aspect of her focus of hospitality , I feel like true Christian hospitality has been a lost art and Mrs. Butterfield has done an excellent job in describing and putting into action what it truly is. In today’s world, the hospitality at the Butterfield’s house is shocking, but if Christians, myself included, practiced what the Bible teaches, it would certainly be ordinary. Prepare yourself to either be incensed with her “out of this world” demands or to come out with a new vision and purpose in serving the LORD through hospitality.

Refreshing, Challenging, & Convicting

Christ calls us to die to self, to love Him in obedience and self sacrifice, yet somehow we miss this or worse ignore it. Seeing God's love manifest in the Butterfield's hospitality is refreshing, putting a desire to implement it my own life (and I have but nowhere to where they are)! Challenging because it is not something that I've thought a lot about and so I found myself wondering does this apply to every Christian in this sort of way? Maybe not in the exact form but it does apply! Convicting because I many times when I was bound to get mad or upset, it was because I saw being selfish and greedy with my time! my only criticism of the work is it was sometimes a bit long winded with its descriptive prose. In the end, the criticism is minor and it is almost paradoxical that a book that I had very strong emotional response both good and bad would get five stars but this is because it didn't affirm where I already was, it challenged me to greater obedience.

Must read

This is a profound and amazing book! Written directly from the heart... for the heart! I geared up at many points and feel so encouraged to live the gospel and be hospitality to those around me! I want this for my kids as well! We look forward to growing in our love for one another and appreciate this inspirational woman and her life so freely shared with all!

A renewed passion for Christian Hospitality

This book by Rosaria has been a great encouragement to me in my own home. The look into biblical reasons for hospitality and actual examples of practical ways to carry it out was very helpful. We opened our home since to many unbelievers from work for the sake of just blessing them and being a faithful friend had opened the door for the gospel to be shared with several of them. Many who were going through hard times, yet no one knew it (we only knew because they opened up while at our home). So it was a testimony that the way to an open door into their life was indeed by giving them an open door into your home and table! Thank you Rosaria! It was a blessing indeed!

Excellent foundation, too much story etc

This was a very tough book for me. The author had some solid foundational and scriptural points. However, they were presented as "must do" items early on, which is really off-putting. Late in the book she wraps it up and says use your own discernment. She should have started off that way. Our church went through this book in small group. BE PREPARED, this smacks a lot of LGB in your face. It could have been done much better instead of used A LOT like she did. Could have been done more gently. She comes at this from an extreme perspective...thus, the radically part. I did take away some excellent points from this but I had to force myself to finish the book.

Life-Changing Book

My wife and I started listening to this book on our honeymoon and spent our free time during our first few weeks of marriage listening to this. Apart from the Bible, this book is proving to be one of the best vision-setting books for our lives together.

Convicting...Inspiring...

First 2 chapters are a bit redundant but let her warm up because you will rejoice and cry your way through the rest of the book. The Lord has opened my eyes even more to my pride and the blessing of opportunity. May the Gospel spread as we open our hearts and our home to a needy world.

Self righteous tone

Rosaria writes in a tone I would be embarrassed to have non-believers read. I understand where she is coming from but WOW most of the book is one big humble brag about her lifestyle and how Godly she is. I know she is an INTJ and therefore believes she is right most of the time but sometimes her opinions overshadowed a grace filled gospel. I enjoyed the stories about Hank and her mother. But I would not recommend this book to anyone

Very Informative

I greatly appreciate Rosaria's insight and viewpoints. As a Christian mom with a LGBT+ daughter, I gained great insight. Because Rosaria left many unanswered questions, I will purchase more of her works, however, I did not find her voice and extensive literary details easy to listen to. You can tell she's a English professor; so is my LGBT daughter. The content of this work is very informative and engaging
