Description
So You Want to Start a Brewery? is the first-person account of Tony Magee's gut-wrenching challenges and heart-warming successes in founding Lagunitas Brewing Company.
In just 20 years, the company has grown from a seat-of-the-pants, one-man operation to be the fifth largest--and the fastest growing--craft brewer in the United States. This equal part memoir, narrative, and business story is an illuminating yet hilarious account anchored strongly in time and place as a one-of-a-kind, made-in-America journey that culminates with the success of one of the nation's most popular and enduring craft beer brands.

I did not even like beer before I read this book!
Would you consider the audio edition of So You Want to Start a Brewery? to be better than the print version?
I enjoyed this so much! Don't know why I even started this book. I have no interest in starting a brewery or drinking beer. I am a whiskey & Tequila man. Now I am trying different beers, going to craft beer festivals an loving life. This book has a strange way of reaching out and grabbing your interest and attention. My next vacation I want to go to this brewery in CA. Read it , you will love it and appreciate life a little more. It may cure what "ales" you.
What was one of the most memorable moments of So You Want to Start a Brewery??
Page 1 to the End. Undercover beer is great.
What about Brett Barry’s performance did you like?
I am visually impaired so audio is my life. He was GREAT.

If you like their beer, you'll like this book
This book is highly reflective of the beer Lagunitas makes. It's not a conformist and not based on any style. It's a bit rambling but overall enjoyable. Interesting addition to the craft beer writing scene.

Repetitive and Self Indulgent
I listen to alot of great books; this wasn't one of them. I found it significantly repetitive and self indulgent. I wish I could get a quarter back for everytime the author yammered the words, "I digress". Besides being slightly annoying and erratic I found the author's self love of his own writing/ print and vagueness regarding the actual business back story hard to stomach. I wanted to like this book but ultimately its flavor profile fell flat.

Great read if you are home brewer with dreams
I enjoyed the candid and realistic inside of starting up brewing company. Tony is very resourceful, no doubt had a vision to pursue his dream, and "it is nice to have friends".

good story with even better narration.
Tony McGee's story is interesting in its own right. However it's Brett Barry's narration that really brings it to life and makes it a joy to listen to.

Great if only 4 chapters long.
After 4 chapters it is just the same thing over and over. Don’t waste your time with this book.

great narrarator and story to tell!
One misconception I made (though I absolutely don't regret buying this book, I really enjoyed it) was that this brewery book is 100% focused on wholesale bottling brewing, and not what you'd think a microbrewery is with a bar. bought it to get some advice on staying my own brew bar, but turned out this was about the story of a brewing companies start up and distribution and growth. still, wonderful listen, really enjoyed it, and still learned quite a bit despite the big difference between the two styles of brewing

Great story!
A great story about the rise of Lagunitas in becoming one of the most famous and internationally recognized California craft beer breweries.
Regardless of your principles or philosophy on how the brand progresses through the Heineken takeover, it’s a good read.
