SELECTIONS BY WOOLLCOTT FROM VANITY FAIR 1923-1924 By Alexander Woollcott.

Narrated by Joseph Tabler

Alexander Humphreys Woollcott (January 19, 1887 - January 23, 1943) was an American drama critic and commentator for The New Yorker magazine, a member of the Algonquin Round Table, an occasional actor and playwright, and a prominent radio personality.

Benchley produced over 600 essays, which were initially compiled in twelve volumes, during his writing career. He also appeared in several films, including 48 short treatments that he mostly wrote or co-wrote and numerous feature films.

The Algonquin Round Table was a group of New York City writers and actors who regularly met at the Algonquin Hotel between 1919 and 1929. Initially consisting of Benchley, Dorothy Parker, and Alexander Woollcott during their time at Vanity Fair. (Wikipedia)

Vanity Fair was edited by Condé Montrose Nast from 1913 until 1936 when it was merged into Vogue. Starting in 1925, Vanity Fair competed with The New Yorker as the American establishment's top culture chronicle. It contained writing by Thomas Wolfe, T. S. Eliot, and P. G. Wodehouse, theatre criticisms by Dorothy Parker, and photographs by Edward Steichen. It became a casualty of the Great Depression.
