This book covers a period of a little more than three-quarters of a century. It begins with the first attempt at English colonization in America, in 1576, and ends with the year 1652, when the supremacy of Parliament was recognized throughout the English colonies. The most interesting period in the history of any country is the formative period; and through the mass of recently published original material on America the opportunity to tell its story well has been of late years greatly increased. In the preparation of this work I have endeavored to consult the original sources.

(Richard Henry Stoddard) began long enough ago to have had his early poetry refused by Poe because it was too good to be the work of an obscure stripling. From 1870 to 1873, he was a confidential clerk to George B. McClellan in the New York dock department, and from 1874 to 1875 city librarian of New York. He was a literary reviewer for the New York World (1860–1870); one of the editors of Vanity Fair; editor of The Aldine (1869–1879), and literary editor of the Mail and the Mail and Express (1880–1903).

Frederick Jackson Turner, American historian during the early twentieth century, based at the University of Wisconsin-Madison until 1910, and then at Harvard University. He was known primarily for his frontier thesis. He trained many PhDs who went on to become well-known historians. He promoted interdisciplinary and quantitative methods, often with an emphasis on the Midwestern United States.

The centenary of the Wars of Liberation is now close at hand, and from the hitherto unpublished archives and private records that are known to exist in Germany some fresh light will probably soon be thrown on the downfall of Napoleon. This brief study of a notable campaign may be of some help to the student of the past and the historian of the future.

J. Franklin Jameson helped found the American Historical Association (1884), and was the first managing editor of the American Historical Review. He also wrote The American Revolution Considered as a Social Movement (1926) and invited W. E. B. Du Bois to present a paper concerning Reconstruction at the 1909 AHA meeting. With Waldo Leland, he started lobbying Congress to create the National Archives, the building for which was first funded in 1926.

A Generation of American Historiography by William A. Dunning is a nice overview of book trends and the histories and historians in the decades (a generation) prior to 1900, when most historians were male and white, of course … but not all.

Mary Wollstonecraft is the author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), one of the earliest works of feminist philosophy. She has been called Britain’s first feminist. Her daughter Mary Shelley is the author of the novel Frankenstein (1818). This biography was written by Elizabeth Robin Pennell. It was her first book, written before she was thirty. She was married that year to illustrator and artist Joseph Pennell.

The campaign of 1859 in Northern Italy was one of the first of the epoch-making, rapidly conducted wars that marked the latter half of the nineteenth century. It was, moreover, as has been pointed out by the author of Imperial Strategy, the “first war in Europe which conveyed some preliminary indication of what railways can accomplish.”

To describe such a movement and its effects. Professor Turner has the advantage to be a descendant of New Yorkers, of New England stock, but native to the west, and living alongside the most complete collection of materials upon the west which has ever been brought together—the Library of the Wisconsin State Historical Society. The aim of the volume is not to show the Rise of the New West as though it were a separate story, but to show how the nation found itself in the midst of questions involving the west.

That a new history of the United States is needed, extending from the discovery down to the present time hardly needs a statement. No such comprehensive work by a competent writer is now in existence. Individual writers have treated only limited chronological fields. Meantime there, is a rapid increase of published sources and of serviceable monographs based on material hitherto unused. On the one side, there is a necessity for an intelligent summarizing of the present knowledge of American history by trained specialists; on the other hand, there is a need for a complete work.
