It is a truth universally acknowledged that a policeman taking a holiday would barely have had time to open his suitcase before he finds his first corpse. And Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch is on holiday in the pleasant and innocent countryside, but not for him a mere body in the wardrobe. There are many, many bodies and an ancient crime more terrible than murder. He is out of his jurisdiction, out of his depth, out of bacon sandwiches and occasionally snookered and out of his mind, but never out of guile. They say that in the end all sins are forgiven.

Perfect story, perfect narrative tone
Stephen Briggs brings Pratchett's work to life in his reliably grounded and sensitive style.
Pratchett's writing finds the balance between whimsical and profound, each sentence bringing a new twist to scene, characters and world. This particular story is the first I read featuring the night watch and I have been hooked on the adventures of Captain Vimes ever since. He embodies the classic hero archetype, with this rags to riches tale. But still manages to bring a fresh feel to an old premise. The story is both fully committed to itself and delightfully self aware. It is elegant, hilarious and perfect in every way.
The narrative voice is comforting and easy to listen to. Clearly a lot of thought has gone into choice of accent and the characters voices. If you follow Briggs' work, which I do, you will find he keeps these voices and accents consistent across different episodes of disc world. I am always surprised by how a narrator can bring up so many details images simply by how they use their voice. Briggs is a master. I highly recommend.

A continuous joy
There are very few books that deserve to be revised. Guards Guards, the first of the Night Watch Discworld novels is one of these few. With the classic performance of Nigel Planer it felt like bounching into an old and beloved friend with whom one has lost contact many years ago. Planer's voice and the late Sir Terry Pratchett's "serious" humour still makes an excellent escape from the rush and turmoil of everyday life. This audiobook is a golden oldie to be revisited every once and again.

Soon to be removed from store
Pratchett was a comedic genius. Monty Python-esk, joyful, witty, human and hope giving.
Unfortunately, the producers have begun replacing the original recordings. See "Hogfarther" for e.g.
Nigel Planer was hand picked by Pratchett because his narration truly captures the british serious yet silly humor. To replace this with a childrens fairy tale grade narrator is a crime upon art.
Get them while you can.

What great fun !
Where does Guards! Guards! rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It is definitely one of the better books. It rolls along with the occasional laugh out loud segment and frequent guffaws.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Its hard not to like all the characters. Pratchett develops his characters as if they were real people. I do like Sam Vimes though. He's an interesting mix of the alcoholic veteran and the suddenly energetic action hero - surprising himself as much as the reader.
What does Nigel Planer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Inflection, accents and delivery pace all bring the characters to life and the events are vested with excitement you might not discover just reading it yourself. There are very few readers I think I'd trust with a Discworld book and Nigel is great.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Not especially. This is a light tale that gallops along exuding fun, humour and wrapped around a cracking good story.
Any additional comments?
Yes. As much as I admire Nigel Planer, I do wish the voice he used for Sam Vimes had suited the character a little better. The voice is a little nasal and somewhat dull. Vimes is many things but he's certainly not stupid.

First visit to Discworld and I can’t wait to go back
Terry Pratchett has a way with words. I love the humor and imagination. A medieval fantasy take that is fresh and interesting is hard to find. Far from the GOT despair, Discworld offers hope. A chance to watch characters develop and grow into something more.
I love it and can’t wait for the next book.

A great start
The book that introduced Captain Sam Vimes may not be the best in the series of Discworld novels that feature him, but it's a solid starting point for the various unique characters of the Night Watch. Indeed, rock bottom is by far the best point to start off the journey of a band of unlikely heroes.
A marvelous book written in a magnificent and unique world, splendidly brought to life by Nigel Planer, who voices each character so well you'd have to constantly remind yourself it's all done by one person, Guards! Guards! is the worth every minute and every penny you spend on it.

Best narrator I know
What did you love best about Guards! Guards!?
Nigel Planer is amazing! The voices you will hear are the same you've imagined in your head, when reading paper book. I enjoy Pratchett again, but this time on the street, in subway, everywhere.
What did you like best about this story?
It is Pratchett, so ..... everything.
What does Nigel Planer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The real authentic voices.

Amazing story, improvable audio
After having read all Discworld books on paper this was my first audiobook by T. P.
Let's get the obvious stuff out of the way - it is amazingly written, the characters are amazing and even though I knew what was happening since I read it before I was hooked all the way through.
Now for some criticism - while I do like the voice of the reader I do not agree with some of the choices he made regarding character voices - especially with the knowledge of having read all books myself. Vetinari for example sounds like a bloated old man and vimes like he has a constant cold.
Additionally some audio issues plague the book. Multiple pauses where I thought the app had shut down, once even fading out the narrator just to repeat the last phrases again afterwards. It sounds very weird.
I would still recommend it!

Great story, editing needs work
Guards! Guards! is a great book and listening to the Discworld characters come to life is a treat. If you are looking to get into the series, this book is a good place to start.
The recording is decent, with distinctive voices for each character, but the editing is very spotty in places. Lines are sometimes cut off before the end of the last word, the pause between chapters is very long and, in one case, the narration fades out. The faded-out part is repeated when the narration starts up again, but all in all the audio could have done with a more careful editor.
