    Dated and Disappointing!

    Published in 1996, this is actually volume 7 of a compilation of monthly essays written by a paleontologist who was also an evolutionary biologist and a historian of science. In the introduction, he appears jaded with his own endeavour and states that he will shortly bring it to an end.

    Sadly, much of the contents is dated and some may find that it carries a lot of pretentious chatter. The essays are supposedly related to the fields of biology and evolution, but many are only distantly related to those fields, for instance :
    • a rather pointless discussion whether the 21st century started in 2000 or 2001;
    • a personal analysis of “Mein Kampf” by the author that uncovers that it is … racist;
    • a detailed examination of Edgar Allan Poe’s best-selling book in his lifetime, a treatise on malacology, as to what extent it was plagiarized from other authors.

    Perhaps, the whole work is to be taken as an attempt to be humourous?

    In any case, it appears best to abstain from it altogether.
