    Description

It is the 41st millennium, and an upstart alien empire has emerged on the Eastern Fringe. After a few skirmishes to retake human worlds from these blue-skinned invaders, the time has come to strike against the so-called Tau Empire.

At the forefront of the Damocles Crusade stand the Ultramarines, commanded by Captain Atheus, the Chapter's Lord Executioner. With his loyal sergeants Numitor and Sicarius by his side, Atheus vows to exterminate the aliens...but the cunning xenos commanders, Farsight and Shadowsun, have other plans.

Amazing reading but the plot shield

The voice acting for this book was awesome a performance that was clean and on point from start to finish.
The main weakness was the plot shield for tge main characters. Now you know that main characters live through the impossible but when this point is made pointed out time after time it stops veing impossible and just annoying, the characters are saved by a thousand last second saves, miracles, and random one shots. This can be done well but in this case it seems just lazy on the writters part.
The rest of the story was fun though seeing each sude adapt to the other. The advanced tech of thr Tau put against the ancient Tech of Mankind makes for some really great battles.

    Grim Dark

As a traveling sales rep i spend a lot of time in my car and I listen to a lot of books on Audible to pass the time. That is to say I’ve noticed my tastes of late have gotten more “refined”, not in the snobby sense but more that I know what I like and what I don’t like. Sadly I didn’t like this book. I love the Warhammer 40,000 universe and am always looking for more Xenos lore, but this book suffered from too much Grim Dark. Phil Kelly did a commendable job portraying the Tau and John Banks is a great narrator, but the Space Marines lack depth and are almost comically stereotypical. For a lot of the fans that is exactly what they are looking for, but sadly it wasn’t my cup of tea.
If you’re looking for Tau lore or are really liked other Space Marine novels then definitely pick up this book, but if you’re like me and can’t stand to hear another “For the Emperor!!!!” then give this one a pass.

Fantastic introduction to the Ta'u empire.

I loved seeing the Empire of man through the eyes of theTa'u empire. Although man is old we are still primitive And although the Ta'u advanced they are very young. Good Book 👍

Enjoying every moment from both sides of the war

I'm still fairly new to Warhammer 40k lore. As a Tau player, I enjoyed the combat between the imperium and the various forces of the Tau. The battlesuit combat was described in an excellent manner. Hats off to John Banks for the excellent narration and to Phil Kelly for the material itself.

On to the next book, For the Greater Good!

    pretty good

Barely getting into 40k and the Tau are the only faction that really interested me so this book was the perfect thing to start me off on my 40k journey :)

It's alright, bad book to start with though.

If you're new to the Warhammer 40k franchise:

Interesting read, however it suffers a bit from "the main protagonists will never die" syndrome. The narrator clearly has a uk accent, but when narrating the alien (Tau) side, he'll go into a stereotypical "Asian" accent, which just sounds weird. Also there's very little backstory to anything going on here, so if you don't know much about Who/What the Imperium of Man or Space Marines are, or "What's a Tau?"/ "Who's this Farsight fella?", Then I hope you like looking at a wiki page as you read. Maybe grab another book to start with.

If you are familiar with Warhammer:

The Ultra Marines are here so get ready for the plot armor. Even the main Tau protagonist Farsight, has his plot armor stripped when facing Cato. Also I believe this is where Cato Sicarius makes his appearance for the first time. Not my type of space marine imo. Don't want to spoil much about his story, but just imagine a not so typical Ultra Marine and I'll leave it at that.

If you're a Tau fan, the book is meh. Lots of Marines love while Tau get maybe get a cool scene here or there, but its obvious this is a Space Marine story that has to overcome the Tau boulder. The Tau side does have some neat things about tau culture and explains where some cool tech from the boardgame comes from, but thats it really it.

    Overall:
Though it has important lore for both Marines and Tau fans, the story could've probably been told better. The narrator was fine until he spoke as the aliens. Expect common tropes when you'd read other space marine stories. If you haven't read any others, then start with a different book.

I didn't hate it, it was even fun at points, good!

though Mary sues exist, they all faced consequences, doubts, failures and intrigue, was fun. overall it was interesting to hear about primus stuff and the events from the gaming stuff I got years ago

    Typical Cato Sicarius

I came for the Farsight lore and was disappointed in how the T'au are constantly depicted. This was my first book with Cato in it and I can see why not many like his unrealistic skills. I still enjoyed the book enough to finish it.

    tau vs spacemarine
