Linda Harner Metzner has spent almost 40 years away from the town where she met and married her recently deceased husband, Alex. Nostalgia leads her to buying the old Victorian house where they had lived briefly and had been very happy. Millicent Le Sueur is an eccentric, obsessive-compulsive bag lady in a rural Southern town who witnesses the hit-and-run killing of a teenage girl. Or so she claims. Some townsfolk believe she killed the girl and made up the story to cover her crime. Battling her neuroses and psychoses, and counting her steps along the way, she tracks a killer she hopes won't count her as the next victim.

Two men vie for Amanda. One wanted the beautiful, fiery Amanda for his bride, the other for wealth and pleasure. Traveling to California, Amanda's family dies of cholera. She had prayed that they would live. Amanda is mad at God for letting them die. Eventually, she learns God did listen to her prayers, in a very extraordinary way. Amanda faces many perils on the trail including being captured by Indians and an evil adversary. Once Amanda realizes her true love, she can't find the words to tell him until it's a matter of life or death, or too late.
