You may know "Teddy" Roosevelt as a President, but you may not know him as a big game hunter. Roosevelt and his friend Merrifield invite us on a journey as they follow the trail of the famed grizzly bear. You will be invited to experience the excitement of the hunt and the footpaths that, if understood, could help lead to "Old Ephraim".

Before Abraham Lincoln was a President he was a senator. He was also a very effective debater. In this famous speech as Senator he draws attention to wording in documents and decisions made by the court that could have forced the legalization of slavery on all states. Lincoln contended that the only way the nation would move forward is through a uniting of ideals, but what he observed was a fracturing and, perhaps, misleading series of decisions that left the American people confused and frustrated.

Lincoln sought to assure the people that keeping the nation united was in the best interest of all. Lincoln clearly stated that if war was to come it would be by the aggression of those who may oppose the unity of the country. Listeners will hear Lincoln's ability as a framer of thought and a debater of ideas. Narrated by Glenn Hascall.

Every time you drink apple juice, spoon out some applesauce, or eat an apple pie there is the name of one man that you may do well to remember. John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed) was a real man who, in his later years, made it a mission to plant apple seeds, which was instrumental in a migration west. Narrated by Glenn Hascall.

"These are the times that try men's souls." With these words, Thomas Paine began a series of 13 extraordinary pamphlets reporting on the American Revolution. Part newsfeed, part op-ed, these pieces were widely circulated in the States and in Britain during the war. They reported on the progress of the war, argued for the reasons for the war, made recommendations on the conduct of the war, and taught citizens of a new country just what their obligations and duties were in support of their new country. A sobering series of lessons on beginning American civics 101.

More books have been written about the American Civil War then any event in U.S. history, and this book deserves a place with those most studied. John Esten Cooke, a Captain in Stewart's Cavalry, and a man who knew Lee personally, gives an insider's view of Lee, his demeanor, and thoughts - before, during, and after this great conflict.

Before Fire Island was a destination for New Yorkers and vacationers, it was so isolated that Captain Kidd the pirate considered it an excellent place to hide treasure - and some say, bodies. Several shipwrecks occurred on the island, creating even more legends of treasure and, of course, the ghosts that protected those treasures. Narrator Scott Nilsen makes these ghost stories and tales of the old Fire Island come alive.

The Drama of Glass, by Kate Field, was published in 1895 and attempts to tell a sweeping story about the past, present, and future of glass while at the same time advertising it's publisher, the Libby Glass Company. The prologue begins with speculations of the origns of glass by the Phoenicians and Venetians. It also depicts the beginings of glass in America in 1608.

Wayland Fuller Dunaway served as a Captain of Copany I, of the 40th Virginia Regiment of the Army of Northern Virginia fought in all the battles of Lee's Army until he was captured after the Battle of Gettysburg, whereupon he is incarcerated at Johnson's Island until the end of the war. This narrative gives an excellent picture of life in the Army of Northern Virginia.

From the onset of the war, Basil L. Gildersleeve, native of Charleston, South Carolina, a scholar, and professor of Greek at the University of Virginia left his students every Spring to return to the army until he was wounded during a skirmish in the Shenadoah Valley in 1864. Thirty years later he authored The Creed of the Old South, and A Southerner in the Peloponnesian War included in this audiobook.

What does one do when issued an order by a superior that is contradictory to what one believes to be right? In this short fictional story from the American Civil War, the protagonist is faced with that very situation. When given an insulting and ridiculous order by his commanding general, he carries the order out. Then, when questioned by a subordinate, he passes it on to him in the same manner. Friendly fire in a fog is just as deadly as fire from the enemy.

They have been romanticized and glorified in the movies and TV, but these are perhaps more accurate portrayals of Wyatt Earp and his contemporaries. Published in 1923, Fredrick R. Beckholdt bases most of these stories upon research and interviews with old timers who witnessed many events portrayed here. Becholdt's portrayal of of the outlaws, hostile Indians, cowboys, gamblers, cold blooded killers, prospectors, and lawmen who inhabited the Wild West is riveting.

In this missive Ambrose Bierce recounts two days in his life, April 6 and April 7, 1862, perhaps the two most significant days of his life. He and over 100,000 other combatants have gathered about a small church near the town of Corinth, "a wretched place--the capital of a swamp, two days' march west of the Tennessee River". The church is Shiloh, and it will lend its name to the great battle that took place there.

Only two people were in a position to experience all the events leading up to the first flight of a viable airplane, and here in three short essays they report how it came about. The idea of powered flight was so new that there were not even accepted methods of measuring the forces at play on a machine in-flight.

Published in 1939, this book contains 12 articles originally published in Good Housekeeping magazine as a guide to young people of the era to achieve a happy marriage. Many of the principles stated are as applicable today as they were 70 years ago, but some of the chapters are best considered only as amusing historical artifacts.

Christy Mathewson was one of the most dominant pitchers ever to play baseball. Posthumously inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame as one of the “Five Immortals,” he was an unstoppable force on the mound, winning at least 22 games for 12 straight seasons and pitching three complete-game shutouts in the 1905 World Series. Pitching in a Pinch, his witty and digestible book of baseball insights, stories, and wisdom, was first published over a hundred years ago and presents listeners with Mathewson’s plainspoken perspective on the diamond of yore.

Charles A. Beard, a proponent of the "New History", which emphasized the importance of cultural economic developments as opposed to just warfare and diplomacy.

The books I am proposing to read for you may have a few extraneous sounds and will be imperfectly read and produced. Hopefully, you will excuse any defects, as these old books are quite unlikely to become audiobooks otherwise and still have great value.

The “Law West of the Pecos", with a great appetite for publicity and a knack for achieving it, was something more than an amusing old scoundrel—for Roy Bean had in him the stuff of a folk hero of the sort which the Old West could hardly again produce.
