By Steppe, Desert, and Ocean is nothing less than the story of how humans first started building the globalized world we know today. Set on a huge continental stage, from Europe to China, it is a tale covering more than 10,000 years, from the origins of farming around 9000 BC to the expansion of the Mongols in the 13th century AD.

In the early 13th century, a coalition of steppe clans transformed into the most dynamic war machine and governing enterprise of its age. Forged in the Steppe follows the ascent of Genghis Khan from fractured tribal politics to continental empire, tracing campaigns across North China and Central Asia and the devastating clash with the Khwarazmian state. Beyond the battlefield, it reveals how the Mongols built a state that ran on speed, law, and logistics—postal relays, multilingual chanceries, merchant partnerships, and a disciplined guard that enforced clear rules from Karakorum to Bukhara.

During World War II, the Night Witches were the only all-female fighting force facing the dreaded German Luftwaffe. These 18 to 23 year-old Russian women became the first in the world to fly combat missions.

When Germany’s Sixth Army advanced to Stalingrad in 1942, its long-extended flanks were mainly held by its allied armies - the Romanians, Hungarians, and Italians. But as history tells us, these flanks quickly caved in before the massive Soviet counter-offensive which commenced that November, dooming the Germans to their first catastrophe of the war. However, the historical record also makes clear that one allied unit held out to the very end, fighting to stem the tide - the Italian Alpine Corps.

From the forested margins of Poland to the frozen deserts of Mongolia, from the scorching sands of Persia to the numbing wastes of Siberia, the horsemen of the steppes periodically overrode Europe for 900 years, conquered China, and spread their culture to India and the Middle East. These nomads formed themselves into moving empires, which for a few years dominated the surrounding trembling nations, and then vanished and melted away, seemingly leaving little trace of their existence other than a record of destruction.

The Scythians were nomadic horsemen who ranged wide across the grasslands of the Asian steppe from the Altai mountains in the east to the Great Hungarian Plain in the first millennium BC. Their steppe homeland bordered on a number of sedentary states to the south and there were, inevitably, numerous interactions between the nomads and their neighbours. The Scythians fought the Persians on a number of occasions, in one battle killing their king and on another occasion driving the invading army of Darius the Great from the steppe.

From about 3400-2600 BCE, the Yamnaya culture stretched from southeastern Europe into central Asia, greatly affecting other contemporary cultures in Europe and the Near East. The hallmarks of Yamnaya culture adopted by other cultures in the Near East and Europe include the use of metal tools and weapons.

Of all the steppe peoples in the medieval period, perhaps none were more important to European history than the Magyars. Like the Huns and Avars before them and the Cumans and Mongols after them, the Magyars burst into Europe as a destructive, unstoppable horde, taking whatever they wanted and leaving a steady stream of misery in their wake. They used much of the same tactics as the other steppe peoples and lived a similar, nomadic lifestyle.
