À propos de ce contenu audio

Were you terrible at history class? Was it just a blur of boring lectures, endless dates, and the same old lineup of white dudes who apparently did everything and invented everything? Maybe your teacher was also your football, wrestling, or baseball coach — because apparently nothing says “qualified historian” like calling plays and assigning worksheets. Or maybe they were the kind of teacher who told you you’d end up at McDonald’s because you were a girl, or Black, or couldn’t catch a deep slant your quarterback couldn’t throw even if his mother’s life depended on it. (Okay, that got a little personal — moving on.) If you’ve ever wanted a second shot at learning the real history — the messy, uncomfortable, hilarious, and often infuriating truth — welcome to A Second Shot at History, or ASH for short. I’m Mr. Stepp, a master-educated history professor with over seven years of public education experience. I’ve spent my career teaching students how to separate myth from reality, story from propaganda, and curiosity from complacency. Each episode of ASH is rooted in careful research, cultural context, and yes — fact-checked and correct history (because we’ve had enough of “alternative facts”). In ASH, I sit down with friends, fellow educators, and curious minds to explore historical events that connect to their lives or just sound too wild not to unpack. My guests drive the conversation; I simply help steer it — adding context, correcting the record, and throwing in a few sarcastic asides along the way. No topic is too fringe or too uncomfortable. Together, we’re diving head-first into the forgotten, the suppressed, and the stories your high-school textbooks either skipped or sugar-coated. So pull up a chair, grab your metaphorical shovel, and join me as we dig into the real, raw, and ridiculous corners of history — the way it should have been taught the first time.Copyright Mr. Stepp

    • Episode 1 - Dred Scott - The tale of one mans freedom and one countries worst sin
      Oct 27 2025
What happens when one man’s perfectly legal (and wildly brave) fight for freedom slams headfirst into America’s favorite pastime—denying its own ideals? In this episode, we dive into the life of Dred Scott, the enslaved man who dared to sue for his freedom—a move both legally warranted and audacious as hell given the racism of his time. We’ll trace his journey through multiple “owners,” the legal maze he had to navigate, and the Supreme Court justices who looked at the Constitution and somehow concluded that Black people had “no rights which the white man was bound to respect.” Spoiler alert: this ruling didn’t exactly bring the country together for a sing-along.

Joining me is my best friend Londell as we dig into the historical absurdity and tragic inevitability of it all. Together, we unpack how the Dred Scott decision didn’t just expose America’s hypocrisy—it accelerated the country straight toward civil war. Expect sharp laughs, deep dives, and plenty of “I can’t believe the U.S. did that” moments as we peel back the layers of one of the most infamous cases in American history.
