    Dr. Gardner is co-author of the textbook “The Treatment and Care of the Veterinary Patient”, co-author of a children’s activity book focused on saying goodbye to a dog called “Forever Friend”, and the author of a book dedicated to pet owners “It’s Never Long Enough: A practical guide to caring for your geriatric dog”. Dr. Gardner also won VMX Small Animal Speaker of the year in 2020!"

    Dana Varble received her veterinary degree from the University of Illinois in 2003 andearned her Certified Association Executive designation from ASAE in 2021. She has practiced clinical medicine in exotic pet, small animal general practice, and emergency medicine and serves as an associate veterinarian for Chicago Exotics Animal Hospital.

    She has spoken locally, nationally, and internationally on herpetological and exotic animal medicine and the state of the veterinary profession. She served as the president of the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians in 2013 and presently works as the managing editor of the Journal of Herpetological Medicine and Surgery for ARAV. In 2015, she joined NAVC and in January 2020, she was named Chief Veterinary Officer.

    As an NAVC spokesperson and a veterinary industry expert, she promotes animal health and the veterinary profession through media interviews and appearances including CNN, NBC News, local media outlets, and others including regular appearances on WGN radio on the Lisa Dent Show. She is the author of Today’s Veterinary Practice column, “The Secret Life of Vets.”

    She shares her home with a Leonberger named Kodi, a Mastiff mix named Denali, a tank of cichlids, four ball pythons, a New Caledonian Giant Gecko, and her human family.

    Derek B. Fox, DVM, PhD, DACVS

    Dr. Fox is a Professor of Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery and Chief of the Small Animal Surgery Service at the University of Missouri’s Veterinary Health Center. He graduated veterinary school from Michigan State University in 1998, after which he completed an internship, surgical residency and PhD at the University of Missouri, eventually becoming faculty in 2004. He teaches courses and lectures on a variety of topics regarding small animal orthopedic surgery both nationally and internationally. Dr. Fox’s special research interest is in limb alignment and deformity correction. He has authored or co-authored 50 peer reviewed papers, 8 text book chapters and numerous abstracts. He pioneered the adaptation and use of the Center of Rotation of Angulation methodology for the quantification and pre-surgical planning of angular limb deformities in dogs. He is a member of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, Veterinary Orthopedic Society and AO.

Continuing her family’s legacy in animal care, she graduated from Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine as a second-generation veterinarian.

    Gene O’Neill joined the NAVC in 2013 as Chief Financial Officer. He was promoted to Deputy CEO and CFO in 2018 and was named CEO in 2019. O’Neill has led the transformation of the NAVC, expanding its portfolio from one which had consisted primarily of its annual veterinary conference, the Veterinary Meeting & Expo (VMX), to a diverse and growing international portfolio that includes: a media division that has become the veterinary industry’s largest trade publisher; a robust online learning platform and virtual portfolio which takes the events and continued education opportunities through which the NAVC built its global reputation and makes them available to more veterinary professionals worldwide; certification programs; an advocacy arm; and an innovative, new style of in-person local events designed to help the veterinary industry get ahead of issues impacting veterinary professionals.     Prior to joining the NAVC, O’Neill held executive and financial leadership roles at the Institute of Internal Auditors, IIA-Australia and SeaWorld of Florida.
