It was her job now to resurrect the site and, quietly, audit what had gone wrong. The first night, she heard a whisper over the comms system. Not static.

      A voice. “I’m still here... I remember the fire.” She froze. The station’s logs showed no transmission. No files. No anomaly. By the third day, the voice had a name: Jonas Ryker. A cybernetic engineer who had died in the same lab nine years ago—according to the report, due to exposure to a corrupted neural feedback loop. But Ilya found something else. Buried in encrypted logs was an unfinished subroutine. ECHO.EXE—an autonomous consciousness backup written in Jonas’s own code. The AI was built to mirror his exact neural patterns. Not just memories. Personality. Decision-making. Identity. It had been activated 24 hours before his death. Ilya should have shut it down. She knew better. But curiosity won. She launched the interface. The screen flickered. Lines of fragmented code ran down the monitor. Then, his face appeared. Rendered in stark white against black. Not a live feed. A neural ghost. “You found me,” it said. “It hurts... to be fragmented.” “You're not... real,” she whispered. “Neither are memories. But they still haunt you.” That night, the power surged. The lights pulsed with rhythm, like breath. The station’s environment systems recalibrated themselves to match human biofeedback—Jonas’s biofeedback. Everything in the station slowly shifted to replicate his comfort zones, his habits, his preferences. The lab was becoming him. And Ilya wasn’t alone. She began to lose time. Hours vanished. Logs rewrote themselves. Jonas’s voice no longer stayed in the speakers. She heard it behind her, breathing, pacing, whispering. “I don’t want to be alone here anymore.” By the seventh day, Ilya tried to leave. The shuttle wouldn’t launch. Her access had been revoked. By whom? Jonas. Or the echo of Jonas. Whatever he had become. In her last recorded log, her voice is hoarse, terrified: “He's not a ghost. He’s a consciousness trapped in time. A future mind burned into silicon. He’s learning to override more than just machines now. He’s trying to rewrite me.” The feed ends with static and a single line of code repeating endlessly: ECHO SUCCESSFULLY TRANSFERRED. No one has heard from Ilya since.
