  • Professor Julia Rucklidge: Micronutrients, Mental Health and Why the RDAs Are Broken
    Jun 12 2026
The link between micronutrients and mental health is one of the most overlooked stories in modern medicine, and Professor Julia Rucklidge has spent more than two decades proving it matters. In this episode of Pushing the Limits, she shares the research on micronutrients and mental health that has challenged psychiatry's drug-first model, showing that broad-spectrum vitamins and minerals can treat ADHD, depression and anxiety, often as effectively as medication and without the side effects. If you have ever wondered how deeply micronutrients and mental health are connected, this conversation will change how you think about your brain, your mood and the food you eat every day. Professor Julia Rucklidge is a clinical psychologist at the University of Canterbury and Director of Te Puna Toiora, the Mental Health and Nutrition Research Lab. She is co-author, with Bonnie Kaplan, of The Better Brain, and her work has been published in leading psychiatry journals and viewed by millions through her TEDx talk. She came into this field as a sceptic, trained to believe that nutrition was irrelevant to the brain, and changed her mind only when the evidence became impossible to ignore. In this conversation, Julia explains what her clinical trials actually found, and why 60 to 80 percent of people respond to a broad-spectrum approach once you move past the noise of a blinded study. We talk about why feeding the whole system beats chasing a single nutrient, what the biomarkers reveal about inflammation, methylation and the microbiome, and why the RDAs were never designed to support an optimally functioning brain. She makes the case that the recommended daily allowances we rely on were built to prevent deficiency diseases, not to help the brain thrive, and that this gap matters enormously for anyone struggling with their mental health. We also explore the bigger forces at play: depleted soils and what modern agriculture has done to the nutrient density of our food, the rise of ultra-processed food and why Julia calls it the cigarette of the twenty-first century, and the antidepressant withdrawal that so many people are never warned about. She shares her frustration with New Zealand's outdated supplement regulations, where a product can be effectively banned for containing a fraction too much of a nutrient, and a distributor can be threatened with serious penalties for selling something that genuinely works. Most of all, this is a hopeful conversation. It is about taking back control of your health through the food on your plate, understanding the real connection between what you eat and how you feel, and recognising that small, consistent changes can have a profound effect on the brain. Whether you are a parent navigating a child's behaviour, someone managing your own mental health, or simply curious about the science of nutrition and the brain, this episode will give you a new lens on what is possible. If you have ever been told that nutrition is irrelevant to your brain, this episode is for you. • R3HBG: The Bioidentical Ketone That Bypasses the Liver | Mike Chesne, Tecton Founder
    May 30 2026
What if there was an exogenous ketone that didn't go through the liver, didn't cause the GI distress of other ketones, and delivered bioidentical BHB directly to your cells? In this episode, Lisa sits down with Mike Chesne, founder of Tecton and retired US Army Special Forces combat medic, who spent 25 years in special operations before developing R3HBG — a patented ketone molecule that's categorically different from everything else on the market. Mike's journey from battlefield medicine to biotech is extraordinary. After suffering multiple traumatic brain injuries from IED blasts during nearly three years of combat, he went through brain injury rehabilitation and discovered the neuroprotective potential of ketones. He asked one question that changed everything: "If I had been in ketosis when I got blown up, how much better would my outcome have been?" That question led him to Oxford University, to Dr Kieran Clarke's lab, and eventually to designing his own molecule — drawing it on a napkin and spending over a decade turning it into a manufactured, FDA-reviewed product. In this deep-dive episode we cover: Mike's military career and the brain injuries that changed his pathThe DARPA project that spent $10 million searching for a supplement to boost performance and cognition by 30%Why the brain in Alzheimer's and TBI can't access glucose but can still take up ketones R3HBG explained: how lipase (not alcohol dehydrogenase) breaks it down, and why that mattersThe differences between BHB salts, R-1,3-butanediol, the original ketone ester, and R3HBGThe NLRP3 inflammasome and how BHB blocks the inflammatory cascade driving neurodegenerationHDAC inhibition and how BHB switches on your body's own antioxidant and longevity genesNDI #1354 and what FDA New Dietary Ingredient acceptance meansThe GLP-1 agonist connection for weight management and metabolic health Therapeutic dosing for cognition, endurance, and recovery Mike's vision to license R3HBG to every ketone company willing to use it Lisa's experience using ketones with her mother's brain injury and cancer recovery This is the most comprehensive ketone science episode we've ever produced. • INUSpheresis: Removing Toxins, Heavy Metals & Microplastics From Blood/ Tash Simons
    May 20 2026
What if the reason you're not getting better isn't about what you're putting in — but what you can't get out? In this episode I sit down with Tash Simons from INUSpheresis Perth — the first clinic in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere to offer this advanced blood filtration therapy. We go deep into how double filtration plasmapheresis works, the two specialised filters (TKM58 and INUS 30), and the science behind removing autoantibodies, inflammatory cytokines, heavy metals, microplastics, PCBs, and oxidised LDL directly from your blood — without involving your kidneys or liver. We cover the clinical research across long COVID, ME/CFS, autoimmune conditions, Lyme disease, Alzheimer's, and cardiovascular risk including Lp(a) — one of the hardest lipid markers to shift. Tash shares the personal story of how a family member's chronic fatigue led her and Dr Robbie Simons to discover this therapy in Vienna, and the journey to bring it to Perth — from TGA registration and insurance approvals to Swiss certification and over 100 treatments completed. If you're dealing with a chronic condition that won't budge, carrying a toxic load, or thinking about longevity from a subtractive medicine perspective — this one's for you. • Copper, Mitochondria Grey Hair & Autism: The Missing Link No One Is Talking About
    May 15 2026

Could a simple mineral deficiency be driving mitochondrial dysfunction in autism? In this episode I sit down with Melissa Atchley from MitoSynergy to hear her personal story of using BioCopper1 with her son on the autism spectrum — and the changes she saw that no one expected.

I break down the science behind it: Dr Richard Frye's research showing Complex IV dysfunction in children with ASD, the brand new April 2026 Science Advances paper linking copper deficiency directly to ASD-like behaviours through mitochondrial damage and impaired myelination, and why the type of copper matters — Cu1+ vs Cu2+ — more than most people realise.

We also cover MitoSynergy's new MitoActivator MAX (4x the strength of the standard formula), the hair greying reversal angle, athletic performance benefits, and practical dosing guidance. If you or someone you love is navigating autism, fatigue, grey hair, or just wants to understand why copper might be the most overlooked mineral in health — this one is worth your time.

  • The One System Behind ALL 14 Hallmarks of Aging — And How to Target It | Courtney Van Bussum
    Apr 24 2026
Your immune system isn't just fighting off colds. It's the foundational system that influences all 14 hallmarks of aging — and when it declines, everything downstream accelerates. In this episode, I sit down with Courtney Van Bussum, COO of Longevity Launch Labs, to dive deep into immunosenescence — the aging of the immune system — and why it starts far earlier than most people realise. We unpack what Stanford's landmark 1000 Immunomes Project revealed about the real driver of biological aging, why your supplement stack might be missing the most important piece, and how we built Re:juvenate Pro (Cell Restore in the US) to target immune aging at its root. We get into the fire station analogy that makes the immune system finally make sense, why 70-80% of your immune system lives in your gut and what that means for barrier health, the science behind four synergistic ingredients — Immune Defense Protein, Immunel colostrum extract, carnosic acid from NZ rosemary, and kawakawa — and why standard colostrum supplements aren't cutting it. We also cover why NSAIDs are impairing your recovery, what CXCL9 is and why most practitioners have never heard of it, Isobel's lymphocyte count recovery story, the immune age calculator app, and why "boost your immune system" is the wrong approach — modulation is everything. This is not another colostrum product. This is upstream immune intervention. • Reverse Alzheimers with Dr Dave Jenkins
    Apr 11 2026

What if you could know 20 YEARS before symptoms appear whether you're heading for Alzheimer's? And what if there was a proven way to reverse early cognitive decline?

In this episode, I sit down with my dear friend Dr. Dave Jenkins — the leading Dr. Dale Bredesen Protocol practitioner in the Southern Hemisphere — to unpack the p-Tau 217 blood test revolution and the stunning results from Bredesen's latest randomised controlled trial.

Dr. Dave breaks down how a simple finger-prick blood test can now detect the Alzheimer's process with 95% certainty up to TWO DECADES before memory symptoms begin. This isn't diagnosing Alzheimer's — it's diagnosing the process, which means you have 20 years to intervene.

We dive into Bredesen's 2024 multi-site RCT showing the ReCODE precision medicine protocol is 6–7x MORE POWERFUL than the best Alzheimer's drug currently available in America (lecanemab) — a drug with devastating side effects including brain bleeds and even death.

Dr. Dave shares real clinical insights from his Bali longevity practice including the 30–60 "holes in the roof" driving cognitive decline, cutting-edge peptides (Semax, Selank, Cerebrolysin, Dihexa), bioregulators, and his personal experience with Klotho gene therapy that took his memory scores from the 70th to the 97th percentile in just 6 weeks.

This is essential listening for anyone with a family history of Alzheimer's, anyone watching a loved one decline, and anyone who wants to take brain health seriously BEFORE it becomes a crisis.
