Mama’s Mission is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing food, hygiene items, household essentials, and clothing to families in need across Sanilac County. What started out of a home has now grown into a full pantry partnership with a local church, serving dozens of families each week. Founder and Director Tayrn Strausser joins Michigan Voices to talk about her work.

    • Providing Furniture for People in Need and Helping the Jewish Community

      June 8, 2025 ~ Diane Charles, executive director of The Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit, runs the oldest furniture bank in North America. It provides essential furniture and mattresses to families transitioning from homelessness, domestic violence, house fires, floods, and other crisis situations. Since the 1960s, it has helped 80,000+ Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb county families with limited means rebuild their lives and live in dignity and comfort. Jeff Lazar is the executive director of Yad Ezra, which provides supplemental kosher food, necessities, and enhancements of holidays and lifecycle events to those in need in the Jewish community. They are committed to operating a high-quality food pantry through hard work and support of staff, volunteers, and donors.

      June 1, 2025 ~ This summer, United Community Family Services–Chaldean American Ladies of Charity (UCFS-CALC) will introduce its inaugural Summer Study Camp, aimed at combating the “summer slide” and ensuring academic momentum for local students who come from low-income families. Kristin Olmedo, president of the UCFS-CALC, joins Michigan Voices to discuss this. The Midwest Independent Retailers Foundation (MIRF), the charitable arm of the Midwest Independent Retailers Association (MIRA), is announcing it will award $50,000 in college scholarships to 25 outstanding students. Established in 1999, MIRF is committed to supporting education and fostering opportunity within the food, beverage, and petroleum industries. Bill Wild, the CEO of MIRF, joins Michigan Voices.
