  • The Lakers Are Winning More Games, But What Have We Really Learned About Their Postseason Potential?
    Apr 2 2024

Even as the Lakers are winning more games (7-3 over their last 10, 18-8 over their last 26), it's still a little tricky to figure out exactly what they are. How good are they? Are they more contender than pretender? What do you make of some of the big wins, like Milwaukee I and II, Minnesota, OKC, etc?

They're clearly much too good to be the genuinely mediocre/middish team they looked like they might be after the post-IST slump. Likely the Lakers finish 10-12 games over .500, which last year would have been enough for around a 4-seed in the West. Now? Likely ninth. But they're clearly not among the elite, either. Unless you're just thinking of results against the high end teams, in which case... they kind of are?

    So much to sort out.

One big Q: Do the Lakers themselves- players and coaching staff- feel like they know? And more importantly, do they agree on the answer?

Meanwhile, the Lakers are getting nothing from their bench. Two points on Sunday, and not much more than that on most nights. How important is that, especially as we get closer to the playoffs, and a theoretical return for Jarred Vanderbilt, as well?

Finally, LeBron's greatness creates hard questions for Rob Pelinka now, and down the road.

HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky, with Guest Aaron Larsuel!

SEGMENT 1: The Lakers are winning, but do we really know what they are?

SEGMENT 2: Is the bench really a problem?

SEGMENT 3: LeBron now, LeBron down the road...

  • Who will Start at Small Forward for the Los Angeles Lakers? Rui, Vanderbilt or Prince?
    Oct 5 2023

Because the Lakers are fairly set heading into the 2023-24 season - the primary members of the rotation are more or less set, there are no big controversies, no huge position battles - fans are intensely curious about the one big thing that isn't yet settled:

Who's gonna start at small forward?

Darvin Ham, not surprisingly, hasn't yet committed to answering that question - they haven't even had three practices or played a preseason game - but different players are getting a chance to audition for that spot. Jarred Vanderbilt, Taurean Prince and Rui Hachimura will all get reps with the named starters (Russell, Reaves, James, Davis). Ham's decision will probably be less about who "wins", and rather which player makes the most sense with that group, and how the choice impacts the rest of the rotation. Which combinations in the second unit would make the most sense? Well, you can't always put those together as easily if one of those dudes is a starter.

The good news? Nobody in that crew is going to complain if they're not in the opening five. Hachimura has already made it clear he's much more concerned about finishing games than starting them.

Other things to watch: Anthony Davis.

His jumper has been receiving a fair amount of attention, with Reaves praising it on one of the many, many podcasts on which he's appeared. The perception is that Davis's outside game has fallen off over the last couple of seasons... but is that really the case? 3-point shooting, for sure, but is that the only thing that matters? Does it really matter anymore if Davis stretches a defense all the way past the arc? It seems like he's a lot less interested in that part of his game, based on shot attempts over the last few seasons.

Finally, Denver head coach Michael Malone said Wednesday that he's not paying attention to the Lakers, and hasn't heard what players have been saying about having a little extra interest and motivation to play his Nuggets following all the post-playoffs chatter this summer. From Denver. Mostly from Malone.

He was very complimentary towards the Lakers... but is he really being serious?

Just another reminder, whether talking about the Lakers or other teams, never ever expect the things they say to motivate their team, frame the challenge or anything similar to actually reflect reality. That's not how this works.

    HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky

SEGMENT 1: Who is going to start at small forward?

SEGMENT 2: What are the tradeoffs Ham is balancing?

SEGMENT 3: AD's jumper and Mike Malone's amnesia.

  • Can LeBron Pressure the Lakers into a Big Trade at the Deadline? Will D'Angelo Russell move?
    Feb 7 2024
The NBA trade deadline is Thursday, and for the time being at least things are looking kinda quiet. The Lakers are still connected to just about every player on the market (Atlanta's Dejounte Murray, Toronto's Bruce Brown, Chicago's DeMar DeRozan, Brooklyn's forward combo of Dorian Finney-Smith and Royce O'Neale) but that doesn't necessarily mean there will be much action. It's a seller's market, and the prizes aren't automatically worth a major premium. In a perfect world, the Lakers could add one of the players above without giving up a significant member of the rotation (or critical draft capital), but that's not the world in which we live. So will they make a deal for Murray, and send (likely) D'Angelo Russell packing (again)? Could they pull smaller deals to add depth and make a run basically with what they've got?How aggressive should they be? On the one hand, they've got a little momentum, and have shown the ability to beat anyone. On the other... they're two games over .500, and while last year's surprise run showed anything can happen, last year and this year aren't mirror images. It's tough being Rob Pelinka. The Lakers might only get one real swing at improving. Can they compromise offseason opportunities for (potentially limited) short term gain? How much pressure is LeBron James putting on the team? Is he even in position to do the leverage thing anymore? Finally, Russell was unusually candid about his approach to the trade rumors that have followed him around basically since he inked his deal with the team last summer.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: With only a day or so left before the trade deadline, where do things stand?SEGMENT 2: How aggressive should the Lakers be?SEGMENT 3: D'Lo and the deadline.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!NissanOur friends at Nissan have a lineup of SUV’s with the capabilities to take your adventure to the next level. • How Does Jarred Vanderbilt's Injury Change the Lakers' Rotation, and Plans at the Trade Deadline?
    Feb 5 2024
It's a very, very busy week in the NBA with the trade deadline coming up on the 8th. And, of course, that means the Lakers tied to any available player on the market, because that's how this works. But while before the chatter was built mostly around Atlanta guard Dejounte Murray, the Lakers now have to fill a massive hole left by the injury to Jarred Vanderbilt. The Lakers now have a gaping hole to fill, in addition to any improvements they want to make in the backcourt, or anywhere else. And the stuff they have available doesn't change. It's one pick, it's D'Angelo Russell, it's (maybe) Rui Hachimura and an injured Gabe Vincent, plus whatever appeal guys like Max Christie and Jalen Hood-Schifino might have.So which holes do they try to fill? Do they keep more assets for this summer, roll the dice on this year and hope for the best? It's not an easy time to be Rob Pelinka.Meanwhile, one of the guys on the list of potential trade assets—Christie—was also one of their most impactful players in Saturday's win over the Knicks. Will Darvin Ham continue leaning heavily into the youngster for his defensive versatility (as well as some outside shooting) with Vanderbilt and Cam Reddish unavailable? Does the (new again) starting lineup mean that Rui Hachimura finally gets the PT Lakers fans have been clamoring for?Saturday it made sense to play Taurean Prince... but that's not going to be the case every game. Finally, what exactly was LeBron talking about with the hourglass emoji last week? And has he made any decisions around his player option for next year? The answer to the latter is no, and the former is "I'm not telling." Or so it was ahead of the game Saturday night. So anything to read into either?HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers have a major hole to fill with Jarred Vanderbilt on the shelf.SEGMENT 2: How should the Lakers try to address their shortcomings at the deadline. How do they prioritize?SEGMENT 3: LeBron says a lot by saying very little.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!NissanOur friends at Nissan have a lineup of SUV’s with the capabilities to take your adventure to the next level. • Lakers Beat Hornets 124-118, Finish Road Trip 4-2. Plus, Jarred Vanderbilt Injury Update!
    Feb 6 2024

It wasn't more than a week ago that things looked desperate for the Lakers. They lost in back-to-back blowouts, and their star players looked very, very shaky from a health standpoint.

Then they won in Boston, without LeBron James, Anthony Davis and (in the second half) Jarred Vanderbilt. Then they won in New York. And then Monday, they finished off the trip with a victory over the 10-win Hornets in Charlotte. Final score, 124-118.

And while the game got a little closer than the Lakers would have preferred in the fourth, the Lakers controlled it throughout, led by Anthony Davis. His scoring and rebounding has been there all year, but as of late AD's passing has also become a really big thing for the Lakers. Monday, he finished with a triple double -- 26 points, 15 rebounds, 11 assists, plus three blocks, on 12-16 shooting. He certainly wasn't the only contributor. D'Angelo Russell led the Lakers with 28 points. Austin Reaves pitched in with 11 dimes of his own. LeBron had 26 points.

The Lakers (27-25) are now two games over .500 for the first time since beating the Hornets on December 28.

And meanwhile, could the extent of the injury to Jarred Vanderbilt's foot be a little less than feared?

    HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky

SEGMENT 1: The Lakers beat the Hornets, finish the trip 4-2.

SEGMENT 2: Russell makes a closing argument?

SEGMENT 3: Did Boston change the season? And might Vando's injury be... not quite so bad?

  • NBA Trade Deadline Day! What if the Lakers Do Nothing? Plus, Kobe Bryant Statue Unveiling
    Feb 8 2024
Wednesday was a very quiet day on the NBA trade market. A couple minor deals, none of which had anything to do with the Lakers.Meanwhile, those with their ears to the rumor mill seemed to come away with the feeling that the odds of a significant deal going down for the Lakers are diminishing. To some degree, that's a reflection of the market. There aren't a lot of high profile players left to deal. Dejounte Murray from the Hawks, still very much tied to the Lakers, is the headliner. After that, it's Bruce Brown? Pick a Bogdanovic? Some years the market is slow. This is one of them. That won't keep people from reading as much into the tea leaves as possible, as evidenced by the online saga around D'Angelo Russell's... was it a surgery? A procedure? A treatment? There was suddenly a great deal of concern about how he was listed on the injury report... for a game happening after the deadline.'Tis the season. So what happens if the Lakers don't make a deal? They obviously have areas where they can improve, but how much better can they get, even adding talent, if it means subtracting multiple players from the rotation? How much can they afford to "overpay," so to speak, in the interest of making a run this season? Is there anyone worth overpaying for? Finally, it's a night fans have been looking towards for a while. Kobe Bryant's statue will be unveiled outside the arena ahead of Thursday's game. It will be a tremendously emotional night.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: It's deadline day, and the rumors are ... kinda stale. There's just not much action.SEGMENT 2: What can/should the Lakers do? How do they balance this year against the upcoming offseason?SEGMENT 3: Kobe Bryant statue night.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!NissanOur friends at Nissan have a lineup of SUV’s with the capabilities to take your adventure to the next level. • NBA Trade Deadline Bonus Episode: Lakers Make No Moves. Missed Opportunity? Buyout Market Coming?
    Feb 8 2024

Much ado about nothing, in the end, though the writing was really on the wall.

The Lakers saw Thursday's NBA trade deadline come and go, and stood on the sidelines the entire time. The biggest names on the market, including Dejounte Murray, Bruce Brown and Dorian Finney-Smith, weren't traded anywhere. But a lot of smaller names shuffled around. Still, there wasn't, at least in the mind of Rob Pelinka, a player the Lakers could acquire that they felt was worth the asking price.

Are they right? Hard to know without knowing what deals they turned down. But they were limited, and ultimately decided that it was better to stand pat, and then engage on the buyout market (expected to be highlighted by Spencer Dinwiddie, who was traded to Toronto, and then released).

Disappointing for Lakers fans, and (probably) Lakers players? Yes, no question. But disappointing doesn't necessarily mean they made a mistake.

    We shall see...

  • Without Anthony Davis, the Lakers Lose Big vs. Hawks. And did Christian Wood Subtweet Darvin Ham?
    Jan 31 2024
The Lakers were walloped in Houston Monday, and had to turn around Tuesday to play the Hawks in Atlanta. This time, though, they'd take the floor without Anthony Davis, who had to miss the game after aggravating his hip/groin injury. It didn't go well. The Lakers were dominated by the Hawks, 138-122, a score that doesn't really capture how Atlanta controlled the game after the first seven minutes or so of the game. D'Angelo Russell played his worst game in a while -- bad timing considering he was up against Dejounte Murray, the Hawks guard rumored to be the apple of LA's eye in a trade that would send D'Lo... anywhere, really. Taurean Prince was... oof. Austin Reaves struggled to carry the load offensively while also checking Trae Young.Save Jarred Vanderbilt (on offense at least) and Rui Hachimura, there wasn't much to cling to, here. You even had Christian Wood possibly subtweeting Darvin Ham when he learned he wasn't starting. Wood denied it after the game... but I don't believe people are going to believe him.LeBron James summed things up well after the game. The Lakers are capable of beating any team in the league on any night. They're also capable of getting their asses kicked by any team, on any night. And now, are we back to Darvin Watch?
