  • #S2 Episode13 Special Guest Mr. Shou Vol.3: Idiom+α
    Apr 16 2023

S: I'd like to tell you why I'm into English idioms.

    M: Wow, sounds interesting.

S: Last year, I had a chance to learn a new phrase aired on TV by chance as well.

    M: That's a small world.

S: It was probably..." break the ice" but there's no ice to crush funnily.

M: No way, you came across a difficult phrase out of the blue.

S: At first, I was puzzled by such a phrase non-interpreted in the literal sense.

M: It's so originally natural that we have practiced only literal translation, isn't it?

S: I had doubted that I really make myself understood by using idioms in the first place. As time passed, however, I intend to dare to use them while other students have used the normal expressions.

M: What made you decide to do take action like this?

S: Actually, I expected they'll help you score.

    M: I see.

S: As a result, the teacher in another class has regarded me as a kind of ace and had me scored. Since then I'm crazy about collecting them.

M: Amazing! Moreover, you come up with what you would use next more rapidly than before, don't you?

S: Now that you mention it, I seem to do earlier than before.

M: To be honest with you, only the grammar you learned up to now doesn't really make any difference in what I taught. So I want you to share something new from point of Shou's view.

S: Well, how about “I’m over the moon.”,

“I’m like a dog with two tails.”, and “I’m in seventh heaven.”

M: Why did you teach three phrases at the same time?

S: Actually, all of them mean “I’m happy.” For instance…

I bought an expensive cake, have a bite!

Oh, what a rare cake! I’m over the moon.

I saw the lunar eclipse for the first time, so I’m like a dog with two tails.

    I’m in seventh heaven!

    M: What happened?

S: At last, I got a new computer.

next,” Give it a shot.” if your friend or family hesitates to do something new, use this phrase.

I’m anxious for making friends well.

    M: Don’t worry. Give it a shot!

    S: Finally, “like nobody’s business”.

This is similar in meaning to “very”.

Why the hell is he calculating fastly like nobody’s business?

M: It is because he practices harder than us.

S: This is the SIJ learning English.

M: I desire to share these phrases with my students.

S: Unfortunately, the spring vacation doesn’t terminate still but I hope I will meet new friends who like to learn English.

    M: Thank you!!!

    Apr 1 2023

    【Writing Q】

Some people think buying a dog is good. Do you agree with this opinion?

    【Writing A】数点誤りがありましたので音声と違う箇所があります。(healthyやtheの有無)

I agree that buying a dog is good.

First, taking care of dogs can learn(/teach) responsibilities because children have a chance to walk and feed the dog. For example, I have a dog at home and I can treat my dog.

Second, having a pet helps owners keep healthy because they usually have to take their dogs outside and it also has owners walk. For example, older people taking dogs outside look very healthy when I see them. I think they need to run to chase their dogs.

Therefore, I agree that buying a dog is good. (97文字)

  • #S2 Episode11 The IELTS Speaking Vol.2 : Part1 Practice "Education" with Band 9 corrections
    Mar 21 2023

    【Corrections】

What kind of school did you go to as a child?/ Who was your favorite teacher?

When I was younger I went to an International school, so instead of speaking Japanese like most people in public schools, I had to speak English and I felt very embarrassed doing this. There was one teacher, whose name I can´t remember now, helped to improve my English and she helped me so much that actually I ended up skipping kindergarten altogether and went straight into junior school/first grade.

Did you enjoy your time in school? Would you say you were a good student?

I didn't enjoy my time in school and I found it very challenging because I had to speak in Japanese all the time. I wouldn´t say that I was a good student as I was always falling asleep in class because the school schedule was so hectic. A lot of teachers just let me sleep though which was really nice of them.

Do you enjoy studying alone or with friends? What are the advantages and disadvantages of studying in a group?

I used to enjoy studying with my friends more, I had a lot of friends through my baseball club but it´s the complete opposite now and I prefer studying alone because my friends just keep talking and I don´t like it. There are advantages and disadvantages to both when you study with people, you can ask them questions and they can help you solve the problem, but like I said, there is a lot of talking and you can lose concentration very easily/quickly.

  • #S2 Episode10 Special Guest Mr. Shou Vol.2: Idiom & Pronunciation
    Mar 12 2023

    【Main Script】

M: I'm in a pretty pickle when it comes to teaching vocabulary.

    S: What's happening?

M: Some students have trouble memorizing spelling properly. Especially, most of them are torn between ”im” and “in”. Do you have some ideas to resolve this problem?

S: How about learning pronunciation in class? Spelling depends on it.

M: Umm... unfortunately, that's way more difficult. To be honest, I will give a test in a week.

S: I have learned the rules from one of the influencers. Actually, "im" is followed by "b","m" or "p". For instance,"immune", "impede", "imbalance" and so on.

M: ...Wow. I didn’t know that. I think I can explain it to them by an exam! Thank you!

S: Sure. I hope we pass with flying colors! While we're at it, I'd like to introduce some idioms.

First, "outgoing". This word means sociable person. My son has many friends. So, he must be outgoing.

Second, "smashing" a kind of British idiom. When you feel amazed or moved, you say "smashing". I've been abroad many times. Smashing!

Third “as happy as a clam”. When we express our big happiness, this phrase is used. I started going out for the first time! so I’m as happy as a clam! Incredible!

     Finally, “a queen bee”.

M: That slang rings a bell.

S: A queen bee is a girl who is the greatest in the school. She’s too prideful. So I’m annoyed. Probably, she’s a queen bee.   This is the “Super Idiom Junkie” learning English lesson called SIJ. “Idiom Junky” is named after my nickname.

     M:Who calls…?

S: Many teachers of American or British. I seem to be famous among them.

     M/S: Thank you.

    【今回使用した隠れフレーズ】

     in a (pretty) pickle:困っている (ビンに詰まったピクルスのように身動きが取れないことから)

     with flying colors:ものの見事に
