    Description

From number one New York Times best-selling author Marie Lu - when a game called Warcross takes the world by storm, one girl hacks her way into its dangerous depths.

For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn't just a game - it's a way of life. The obsession started 10 years ago, and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down Warcross players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty-hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. To make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks in to the opening game of the international Warcross Championships - only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.

Convinced she's going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game's creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year's tournament in order to uncover a security problem...and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika's whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she's only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

In this sci-fi thriller, number one New York Times best-selling author Marie Lu conjures an immersive, exhilarating world where choosing who to trust may be the biggest gamble of all.

Interesting world, good writing, meh characters

I might have liked it more if I'd connected with characters. Most of the team members were blurring together and the romance was a little rushed. The book also kinda just... ends abruptly. The identity of the antagonist is reveled in a very obvious twist and then the book stops. It feels less like the first book in a series and more like Part 1 of a novel that's been hastily chopped up.

    Incredibly dense protagonist

Let me start by saying that overall, this story is pretty good. It has a nice setup, and the final twist really threw me for a loop. The main problem that I have with this story is that Emika (I might've spelled that wrong) is so incredibly dense at times that it hurts. Even when something is extremely obvious, she will state it out loud as if the reader couldn't deduce it for themselves. There are also quite a few unnecessarily added dramatic pauses that make some parts seem silly. Emi also seems to make some incredibly foolish choices when it comes to whether she should share information that is INCREDIBLY important, even when someone else's well being is at stake. The dialogue between characters can also be incredibly cringy at times, especially when characters are trying to be subtle. They are usually about as subtle as a clown at a funeral, and they were a couple parts that made me legitimately facepalm. However despite all of these flaws, I enjoyed the story overall, and none of these issues were entirely unexpected as I find most of Marie Lu's story have some aspects that frustrate me. I still enjoy them all the same.

    Wow

This was a wilde ride. I was invested from the start, but still things kept building up and getting crazier. The narrator was truly great, each character sounded different from one another, and she gave the proper emotions and sense of urgency (as in action sequences) when they were needed. This audiobook was definitely worth it

    Ends with a cliffhanger

I feel a little cheated knowing that I’d have to buy the second book only to resolve the main plotline of the first book. The story has some gems though and the technological concepts were interesting.
The reader was excellent. Great distinctions between characters and expression of emotions. She kept me engaged.

Overall decent, but too much harlequin romance

An ok sci-fi story, but I found it spent too much time and silly detail on the romantic aspect of the two main characters. A harlequin romance novel with some sci-fi mixed in. Not what I was looking for and would not recommend.

    Amazing!

I love Marie Lu and this book did not disappoint! I can't wait until the next book in the series comes out. Also, great narrator! Loved the accents and tones she conveyed while reading.

    Fun adventure

The narrator was easy to listen to and the book was a fast, easy listen. I had some issues with the choices the MC made (stupid ones!) but at the same time, I very much liked her. Suppose that's a reflection of the author's skill in sucking me into the story.

    Semi-Spoiler:
The end was as expected, even the twist, but again, I enjoyed the story and simply HAD to listen to the end, even as I knew what was going to happen.

I look forward to more stories in this world.

    Another dumbed-down YA novel...

I was really into the premise/summary of this book and snapped up the audiobook pretty quickly. I was quickly disappointed. This is your typical mary jane character + inexplicably besotted billionaire/popular guy in a YA sci-fi, and both main characters got on my nerves. The main is not at all humble or realistic, and literally thinks the decisions everyone makes are because of her. (They usually are, which is also weird.) Kind of reminds me of Twilight. If you liked that kind of thing, maybe this will float your boat. I was hoping there would be a magical plot twist + resolution that would explain and justify half of the dumb decisions/weird illogical jumps these characters made, but the ending is very abrupt and explains very little. The only pLoT tWiST is pretty obvious and very hastily revealed. This is very clearly written with a sequel in mind, but from a plot standpoint this book does not stand on its own.

It might have been easier to overlook the plot if it were written a bit better, but some sentences/phrases were just a disaster and you could tell they were awkward for the narrator to say. Very unimaginative language and the writing itself is kind of... bad. Like, I'm pretty sure any tween with an interest in books could churn out a similar masterpiece. Gems like ''it jars me, hard'' and ''my fists tighten'' are all over the place. At first I thought it was the narration making the writing seem dumber than it actually is - it sounds like it's read by Nancy Drew, and the end of nearly every third sentence is read out like it's a cliffhanger. It's not, it's not even the end of the chapter. And it is done with super inane details which makes it kind of weird. While I do think it would be way less frustrating to just read the book, since the different accents and voices actually detracted from the experience, I'm not sure I will pick up the inevitable sequel. The other elements do not redeem it, and I don't care enough about any of the characters to find out what happens.

Overall, I'm disappointed. It was a quick read/listen but after that ending I feel like I wasted my time.

Another super cringy YA novel I couldn't put down

I don't know what's happening to me. I used to hate YA novels. what has happened? am I less pretentious now? I don't know. All I know is that I was able to stand the cringy romance and way over powered lead character (apparently this is called a "Mary sue"). The action was well paced. The ending of the book was predictable but just thought provoking enough to make it worth it.

    poor writing and monotone performance.

At no point in the story were emotions created in me. I didn't care about any of the characters. The actions scenes were poorly written and didn't "quicken the pulse". The idea of the game was good and the tech created in the story was solid, but the rest of the book was window dressing for that idea.

Will there be a second volume?

I really enjoyed this audio book! The story is fascinating and exciting and I loved the setting and the pace of it. Hopefully there will be a second book soon because this just can't end with such a cliffhanger!
