    Description

A chilling thriller that's perfect for fans of Get Out and The Haunting of Hill House.

A dinner party is held in the penthouse of a multimillion-pound development. All the guests are strangers - even to their host, the billionaire owner of the building.

None of them know why they were selected to receive his invitation. Besides a postcode, they share only one thing in common - they've all experienced an unsettling occurrence within the building's walls.

By the end of the night, their host is dead, and none of the guests will say what happened.

His death remains one of the biggest unsolved mysteries - until now.

    A Truly Original Story

I loved the premise and the deliberate pacing of the story. My only quibble is that there were several chapters that were not as compelling to me and could have been omitted but I felt the end brought things together neatly and with a deft touch. Came here due to his work on the Magnus Archives and I look forward to more from Mr. Sims.

    Creepy and satisfying!!

I cannot say enough good things. It was a brilliant orchestra with each character an instrument and they all got solos, but came together in the end for something truly astounding. Loved it.

    Good story, mostly boring writing

I will start this out by saying I have a bias for Sims' work. I am a major fan of some of his podcasts. The story itself is great. I love the concept and the characters. They've got actual substance to them and there's even trans representation that isn't the focal point of the character. it's just a brief description like with any other character which was a welcomed surprise.

Like I said, the story is great. The book itself tends to be quite boring for most of it. That's an unfortunate pattern with Sims' work, in my opinion. Great concepts but when it's not on the actual plot parts the work is very slow and boring.

The conflict and more supernatural parts of the story are well written and interesting. It's the filler bits that are duller than hell.

The performances by the narrators were amazing. Loved all of them. Although towards the very end there's some overlap with the voices that can be distracting. Still great work from all of them.

I'd still recommend it. Just know that some parts feel like they drag on for ages.

    Amazing story telling!

I loved Jonny Sims'work in the Magnus Archives, and got his book going for a similar weave of complex, interlocking storytelling with memorable characters and amazing voice acting, and was certainly not disappointed! I'll be keeping an eye out for future work by this incredible author

Don’t bother to listen to the ending

The story of 13 strangers going to a dinner party where no one knows each other and was supposed to similar to a modern day Clue had me hooked. The stories of each character were entertaining, but sometimes long. I’d say, you could just listen to their stories and be done. The ending was such a waste and such a let down to the buildup.

    Spooky and Entralling

This book was amazing as always.

As someone terrified of the grotesque and nasty Leon's story was a lot I was revolted in the best way possible. and Carrie's story actually moved me deeply.

I loved how the story at first felt like an anthology, but as the complex was more explored the stories began to weave together and become one interwoven piece.

    lovely job!

    Nearly Perfect

What a relief to find a good horror novel. I loved this overall. It is extremely well-written and developed. Nothing shoddy about this one. I loved the structure. The thirteen stories/people are deftly constructed and woven together and unlike so many novels nowadays it's not just a cheap trick to distract from an otherwise bland storyline. They all matter and they all work together and they're all there for a reason.

By the end I had almost forgotten I'd read a "horror" novel. I was surprised at how close I'd become to the characters.

My only criticism is I wish it had been a *tad* more scary and a bit less Twilight Zone. I would describe it as more Black Mirror than Stephen King, and I prefer Stephen King, but that's a personal preference.

I thoroughly enjoyed this from start to finish. You can't go wrong with intelligent, original, well-written horror.

I did think the narration had a few HORRIBLE clunkers. I won't name names, but there were two I had to FF through they were just so irritating.

    I love this story!

I was so sad when it ended and to find out this is the author’s first book. I will look forward to more! It is about individual personal demons, redemption and revenge.
Just take a listen you will love it.

    Watch out for the building...

I loved the conceit behind these profiles of interesting and singular people who interact with the building in question. Their individual perspectives wind towards a sort of predictable ending but the trip there was well worth the attention I gave this book. Excellent character representation - I have my favorites from the experience, from a combination of how they were written and how well they were acted out for us.

    I love Jonathan Sims

This is a vary biased review. I love Sims' work and I love the atmosphere it has. His horror has always struck me as the most creepy because it's so close to the surface. It has a certain plausibility that makes it uncomfortably close to reality with the mundane and disturbing atrocities that occur. I'm also very tired so I don't know if what I am saying makes any sense. It made sense in my head. Suffice it to say, his work is brilliant and I will continue to consume every bit of it I can get my hands on. RIP Magnus Archives. I was there at the end.

As a fan of The Magnus Archives...

...I had to listen to this book from Jonathan Sims! And it’s been everything I hoped for and more! From his podcast „The Magnus Archives“ I already knew, that he is fantastic in creating existential fears is his stories. In this book he takes that skill and manifests the horrors of capitalism in ways that are relatable and repulsive at the same time! Well done!

    Jonny Sims is a genius

Since I absolutely love The Magnus Archives, I was beyond excited that Jonny Sims published this book. Naturally, I had to listen right away.
It's captivating and gruesome in the best way possible, and you definitely recognize his writing style. You can see how he pulls the strings and you just know that in the end, it'll come together beautifully. As it does.

    Capitalist Horror Stories

A great collection of urban horror stories, strung together by a theme of the modern and common terrors most of us are familiar with but try to tune out. The different performances are a pleasure to listen to and add a lot of character to their stories and the finale. My only small gripe would be with said finale, which succeeds in delivering catharsis but destroys most of the ambiguity and mystery the previous vignettes have successfully built up. Although, this is hardly a deal breaker and the book is still very much worth listening to.

P.S Fans of the Magnus Archive will feel right at home.

Gory horror and yet kind of wholesome

This book has just about everything I could have wished for: Sometines scary, sometimes gory horror, casually queer caracters, criticism of capitalism and a satisfying ending, plus a cast of great and really varied voice actors. I really enjoyed it and will go now to shout praise for it off all the rooftops available to me!
