Description

The beloved teacher of spiritual wisdom and author of the phenomenal New York Times and international best-seller The Four Agreements takes listeners on a mystical Toltec-inspired personal journey, introducing us to a deeper level of spiritual teaching and awareness.

In 2002, Don Miguel Ruiz suffered a near-fatal heart attack that left him in a nine-weeks-long coma. The spiritual journey he undertook while suspended between this world and the next forms the heart of The Toltec Art of Life and Death, a profound and mystical tale of spiritual struggle. As his body lies unconscious, Ruiz's spirit encounters the people, ideas, and events that have shaped him, illuminating the eternal struggle between life - unending energy and truth - and death - matter and subjective knowledge - in which we are all called to engage.

Over 10 years in the making, The Toltec Art of Life and Death invites listeners into the mind of a master of spiritual seeking, offering an unparalleled and intimate glimpse into the development of a soul. In this culmination of a lifetime's learning, Ruiz shares with listeners the innermost workings of his singular heart and mind and summons us to grapple with timeless insights, drawn from ancient Toltec wisdom, that are the essence of transformation.

Loved his other books, this one not so much

I have to admit, I really like most of his other works. This one bored me to tears and I stopped listening early into it. Sorry, just wasn't my cup of tea.

Very boring and uninteresting book.

A very boring and uninspiring book! The book is nothing like the 4 agreements which make you want to read more of Miguel.

Extremely boring

I loved the 4 agreements, this book is nothing like that. Felt like reading the Old Testament.

Not everyone's cup of tea

Okay. For the first third of it at least, I had this persistent thought in my head: 'I can't believe I paid money for this.' Seems a little harsh now, but it's really not everyone's cup of tea. Believe it or not, it feels more than a little self-indulgent. God, I feel bad even writing it, but it really is a long and incredibly long-winded introspection of the pivotal moments of Don Miguel's life seen from different perspectives. There are nuggets of wisdom scattered here and there, far and few in between. The strongest part comes closer to the ending. It gives you a lot to think about, but nothing really to implement in your everyday life, not unless we're talking in a very remote philosophical sense - a glimpse of what life is like for those 'awakened' as opposed to the rest of us, but not really much beyond that. Sorry, a really unenlightened seeker talking.

The narration also didn't work for me, the narrator is doing a lot of voices, including that of an old woman, other women, and kids, and, as it often happens when a man is trying to sound like what he *thinks* a woman should sound like, it gets incredibly annoying and jarring to the ear. It makes you actively dislike the people he's representing. When he's reading the parts written in male first person, he's great.

In conclusion, I'm really not sure I'd buy it if I knew beforehand what it was going to be like. It feels like I'm lying in the street with my arm broken, and there's this great healer sitting next to me, but instead of doing something to put my arm back together or at the very least telling how to do it, he's just smiling and telling me all about this great world where everybody's happy and healthy. I suppose it's like this. If you're looking for immediate assistance, probably this isn't it. If you're more interested in broadening your spiritual horizons without urgency, this book is fantastic and I recommend it. On my part, I am grateful for this introduction to Don Miguel Ruiz and for the food for contemplation it has given me.

Some good points but far a few between in my opinion. I struggled but finally gave up trying to stay interested at chapter 16.

Lessons on life and death

I enjoyed the concept of unity and inclusion of the survivors and their determination as well as their surrender of knowledge to encompass wisdom regarding living and transformation.
