Avis de l'équipe

Supernatural mystery lovers will thrill to experience this fifth effervescent work in author E. J. Copperman’s beloved Haunted Guesthouse Mystery series, which follows spunky sleuth Allison Kerby on her continuing adventures as the crime-solving owner of a genuine haunted mansion. In The Thrill of the Haunt, Kerby finds herself knee-deep in two separate cases - and she’s got ghost problems to boot! Little does she know that her investigations are about to collide in a startling cataclysm of crime and (fingers crossed) punishment!

Performer Amanda Ronconi perfectly captures the cozy charm of this clever, frothy mystery, using her wry voice to bring Allison’s helter-skelter personality to life!

Description

Alison Kerby's guesthouse is already crowded with spirits. The last thing she needs is a whole new batch of haunts settling in. As Alison's reputation as "the ghost lady" grows, so does her business - and not always in a way she'd like. Tourists may be flocking to her guesthouse for a chance to glimpse her resident spirits, but her special abilities are also bringing unwanted private investigation cases to her door. And she has no choice but to take a case when the local homeless man is found murdered under mysterious circumstances, just hours after asking for help in exorcising a specter.

If that weren't enough to deal with, Alison's other PI case soon turns fatal, as the mistress she was spying on for a jealous wife turns up dead as well. The cases seem like they couldn't possibly be linked, but with a mountain of clues, motives and suspects - both living and dead - Alison will have to think fast before someone else checks out for good....

Good series, though getting a bit drab

If you could sum up The Thrill of the Haunt in three words, what would they be?

Books 1-4 Again.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Not really surprised. If you've read any of the previous books, the author loves to have the protagonist plod along while whining and throwing out childish quips, then suddenly have a revelation that makes all the convoluted pieces fall in place. No different here.

Which scene was your favorite?

Probably the very last. It wasn't unexpected, but it was still a nice scene.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not particularly.

Any additional comments?

I like this series. I do. But Amanda keeps writing the same book with different elements.

The outline is pretty much that Allison is presented with a case that she doesn't want to investigate. She whines and mopes and eventually does it based on some silly reason that could easily be gotten around. She plods through the investigation making glaring mistakes and oversights while relying mainly on her ghosts and daughter for true insight.

Throw in a bunch of "comedic" moments worthy of a 90's sitcom and then we get to the resolution where intuitive leaps are made and a seriously convoluted plot gets (somewhat_ unraveled. This book's intertwining and resolution are particularly confusing.

The sad thing is, there's a lot to enjoy here without the silly resolution to the mysteries. These stories would be just as enjoyable with a normal whodunnit resolution. I could also do with less of Allison's whining and 2nd grade sarcasm. For good or bad though, Ronconi's voice gets her personality across perfectly.

Good story, tired dialogue.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I wish the author would rely on the strength of the story she is trying to tell. I love the story and the mystery involved, but after about 2 hours in the sarcastic wit, and constant one liners gets old. Especially because a lot of the lines make no sense and seem like they are only there for cheap laughs.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I love the authors take on murder mystery and detecting. I am a lover of all things Agatha, and I like simple old fashion murder mystery, without too much suspense or gore.

What about Amanda Ronconi’s performance did you like?

I am not sure if it is her narration that makes it so snarky, or if it is the way it is written. I always love Amanda Ronconi's performance, but not sure if maybe her sarcastic way of reading is all together entertaining in this case.

Was The Thrill of the Haunt worth the listening time?

Yes and No, I loved the underlying story, but found some of the dialogue a little too much.

Witty series

The narrator is wonderful as the characters in this series start to grow and mature.

Another fun romp

I enjoyed this book in the series as much as the others.
There was a bit in the middle and towards the end where Alison was being a bit of a whiner, and I worried that her character was going to be stunted in that phase. Thank goodness, she had some personal growth eventually to bring things more to center again.
There was a character that wasn't fully explained, I'm not sure why, but to say more would be a spoiler, so I'll leave it be.
Enjoy this book, and leave the heavy thinking aside for a few days, like a mental trips down the shore.

The Thrill of the Read

I enjoy this E.J. Copperman series, A Haunted Guest House Mystery. It's light hearted yet has interesting detective stuff too. I'd own the shorter ones but their just that, short. Too short for my listening taste.

Great author

Great narrator

Best one of the series!

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this latest addition; each book continues to improve in substance and I've fallen in love with the characters. Returning to this series was like returning to old friends. Amanda Ronconi's voice is perfect for the personalities at 1.25 speed.

A Nice Story

‘The Thrill of the Haunt’ is a great addition to the Haunted Guesthouse Mystery series. The same cast of characters are back with an intriguing plot line, a few twists that I didn’t see coming as well as a few humorous moments mixed in, but there wasn’t must to make it stand out from the others in the series. If you’re looking for a light-hearted mystery then give this book a shot.

Just okay

I've listened to a bunch of these books. They're not great literature, but they are entertaining light reads. However, I found this book difficult to listen to because of the main character character's snarky bad attitude and constant complaining. I don't think I'll be listening to anymore of these. Also the mechanics of the ending were a bit clunky even though they mystery was fairly decent.

One of the better ones

Throughly enjoyable. More mystery in this audiobook. Ghosts are all over the place, helping, hindering and mixing it up.
