Description

Deep below the University, there is a dark place. Few people know of it: a broken web of ancient passageways and abandoned rooms. A young woman lives there, tucked among the sprawling tunnels of the Underthing, snug in the heart of this forgotten place.

Her name is Auri, and she is full of mysteries.

The Slow Regard of Silent Things is a brief, bittersweet glimpse of Auri’s life, a small adventure all her own. At once joyous and haunting, this story offers a chance to see the world through Auri’s eyes. And it gives the listener a chance to learn things that only Auri knows....

In this book, Patrick Rothfuss brings us into the world of one of The Kingkiller Chronicle’s most enigmatic characters. Full of secrets and mysteries, The Slow Regard of Silent Things is the story of a broken girl trying to live in a broken world.

But No....

The Kingkiller Chronicles first two books were narrated by a talented voice actor who's performance made this already amazing series even more enjoyable, you'd expect him to narrate the next item in the series. But no, instead we get the author - and while not a complete failure of a reader he certainly did little to nothing to elevate this material. He read rapidly, somewhat breathily, somewhat pretentiously.

Auri is one of the most delightful characters in The Kingkiller Chronicles, you'd expect a book about her to be interesting. But no, instead we get this. If you're into feng shui or interior decorating maybe you'll get a kick out of reading about Auri constantly re-arranging everything.

There was a lot of potential here for an interesting book, every now and then we get teased with some tidbit from Auri's past. But no, we can't have that, where does this bottle want to be again??

"But no" - I should've counted how many times that exact phrase was used in this book...

I'd like to know who is paying for these glowing 5 star reviews or if they got a different book than I did?

I'd also like to rate this higher than one star. But no....

I was warned.

When Rothfuss says this book isn't for everyone, believe him. I found it slow and tedious. The audio book though is great for insomniacs.

Ruined Ari for me

Yes it’s my fault for buying before reading reviews, I hope i can get a refund.
It’s very frustrating listening to this after finishing the second book just yesterday. There is nothing clever or interesting about this book.

This book ruined my love of Ari. I knew she was a little odd from the other books but they also made her seem clever and interesting, maybe a student of master namer. “But no...” this books just describes her as a crazy OCD madwoman.

I honestly wish I did not listen to this, I would be much happier

Take author's advice, do not buy this book

Any additional comments?

I loved the first two books, saw the 4.4 star rating, so I purchased this book. Unfortunately, I didn't hear the author's warning until after I purchased the book. After an hour of pointless nonsense, I skipped to the final 20 minutes just to see how it ended. From the high rating, I guess I'm in the minority, but I think this book is completely unnecessary.

A slow regard of Silent things - hmmmmmmmm

OK - so most of us who bought this book are fans of Rothfuss' Kingkiller chronicles. So, we already love his work. No question.

This work, however, is a mixed bad.

The sentences are masterfully crafted. The prose, description and witty use of personification of inanimate objects - all are masterfully done. If we were just looking at those things, this book would be compared to works of the greatest literary masters. That is my opinion, of course. Others may think differently.

Unfortunately, all that greatness isn't put together into an overall structure that makes sense and creates a reasonable story.

If this was a soup, I'd say that Rothfuss' ingredients were perfectly prepared and of the best quality, but they were not put together well into a good theme that produces a delicious and nutritious soup.

I thought his performance was better than I expected. Sometimes, because authors are great at writing, they make the mistake of thinking they're also gifted dramatic actors. I expected that Rothfuss' reading would be a lot worse than what was presented here. It was actually ok - it didn't truly distract from the work- the lack of a good over-arching story did.

A Week In The Life Of A Crazy Person With OCD...

Would you try another book from Patrick Rothfuss and/or Patrick Rothfuss?

Yes, but only to finish the trilogy I have already invested in.

What could Patrick Rothfuss have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

He should have left it in the bottom of his trunk as he himself suggested that was all it was good for. At the very least he should have made it free to his many fans that are waiting patiently for the conclusion of the trilogy.

What didn’t you like about Patrick Rothfuss’s performance?

As far as author-performances go, this wasn't too bad. I think it should be left to the professionals though.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

None whatsoever. No plot. No story. I soldiered through the entire 3.5 hours thinking that eventually, something interesting will happen... It never did.

Any additional comments?

Has Rothfuss's success from the first two books of this trilogy made his ego so huge that he thinks he can push this piece of crap off as part of the Kingkiller Chronicles? AND read it himself? AND charge us for it? AND say "f**k those people" who he knows won't like it? I will be requesting a refund.

decided to return after < 1 hr

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

If you are into reading non-narrative poetry, this book might be for you. It is basically a flowery description of a person's day and personality. From what I've already listened to, it does give a good insight into Auri's personality, but no backstory as to who she is, why she left for the underthing, etc.

Would you ever listen to anything by Patrick Rothfuss again?

Certainly I will listen to the 3rd book of the series. PR is awesome with narrative.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The quality of the recording itself was a little lacking -- a little more breathy than the narrator of books 1 & 2 of the KC series, for instance. I might have finished listening with a different narrator.

What character would you cut from The Slow Regard of Silent Things?

so far there is only one character, Auri. and then a luminescent (maybe bug?)

Any additional comments?

The author's intro should be in the description of the book -- or something that says "this is not a narrative."

I was going to return it, but...

What disappointed you about The Slow Regard of Silent Things?

Nothing happened

Has The Slow Regard of Silent Things turned you off from other books in this genre?

No. It was just a bad novella

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I listened to it on speed x3 and it still moved painstakingly slow

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Nope

Any additional comments?

I was going to return it but I only payed $2 for it. I'm not saying it was worth $2, because it's not, but it's also not worth going through a return to get the $2 back

I wanted to know more about Auri - I know nothing more

I was really looking forward to learning about Auri - her past, what makes her tick, etc. I got none of that in this. Just a random jumble of words and the phrase "but no" entirely too often. Maybe it's my engineer brain but I did not grok this story at all.

I love you man, but the book is bad.

I took all the advise he gives in the beginning, I was not expecting blood or fighting, I understood this is the story of Ari, first I understood that meant it will be explained why she became to be, who she was but it is just a description of how she sees the world. Fine, I love Ari, I want to know anything about her, even that means a 3h 30 min of a dull story. Calling the story different is accurate, I wouldnt call it 'mesmerizing' 'charming' or 'delightful' as I seen on others reviews. You really got me angry on the end note saying "F*** those people" to whoever doesnt like the story, really? You knew the book was not material to sell, and people, your fans, the people who buy your books and wait for the next one will want anything about Ari, but you knew this is not good enough.

Not for everyone, but definitely for me

The foreword of this book begins with "You may not want to buy this book". I suggest you read the foreword (either in a physical copy or in something like amazons samples) before deciding if you want to read this book. It may not be for everyone, and it most definitely will not make any sense to you if you have not read the previous two books, The Name of the Wind, and The Wise Man's Fear (which are both brilliant, and whyever would you not have read them yet? Read them right now and come back afterwards). I listened to the audiobook, narrated by the author, Patrick Rothfuss, himself. Sometimes you can tell that this is the first time he narrated an audiobook, but overall it went pretty well.

This book is hard to review. Not because it is hard to do without giving spoilers (hell, I am not even sure if spoilers in the traditional sense are technically possible for this book). It's because it is something completely different from almost every other book I have ever read. It focusses on Auri, who is one of my favourite characters of the Name of the Wind series, if not the favourite. It gives the reader a view into the head of that wonderful, broken girl.

I loved it. I did not love it like I loved Name of the Wind (which I loved for its lyrical language) or like The Way of Kings (which I loved for the Story and Worldbuilding), or like I loved A Memory of Light (which I loved (among other things) for how it managed to actually evoke the images of what was happening inside my head). No, I loved it for how it just perfectly fit the image I had of Auri. It was exactly as I expected, while being completely unlike anything I expected.

Now, I know that this statement may not make much sense. How can something be as expected, while not being as expected? Well, it's easy: Auri behaved like I expected her to, but it was completely unexpected how Pat described it. I am sure that there is more to this book than the first read shows. I am also sure that I missed out on some things by listening to the book instead of reading it (there are some plays on words which are hard to get right in an audiobook). I will have to read the eBook to get the other half of the experience.

Patrick Rothfuss managed to write a book completely different to the others, while staying true to them at the same time. He managed to write a book that completely defies all standards of what a story is supposed to be, while still writing something that I loved to listen to. And, most importantly of all, he managed to write in a style that completely fits one of the most mysterious, beautiful and broken characters I have ever read.

As Pat says: "This book may not be for you". But it most definitely was for me.

Not much story for the money

The story is fairly short and very unusual. We liked it mostly because we really like the world and Ahri.
It is nothing like the other "kingkiller" books though, so don't be surprised about that.
Most of all we are annoyed because of the cost of the novella. It should really only be 1/2 of the price.

Thank you Patrick, for this story.

I am so glad, that Patrick didn't throw this story into the trunk! I just love Auri and it's how he said in his comment. We all have a little Auri in our heart.
Patrick just has a gift with words and wind up into his stories quiet deeply is so easy, that always you need time to come out of the story. So if xou have a deadline o any kind, don't start, to stop is like cutting out your eyes. That's sounds brutal, but it's how it feld for me the last time😅

A bit special, but brilliant!

I loved this book. It was very strange, but it has a unique magic to it, this was definitely not the last time I've listened to it. But please read name of the wind first, otherwise you'll be very confused.

Sehr unkonventionelle Story.

5 hours of my lifetime!

The entire story is about a girl walking through empty rooms, doing things with things. Nothing else (at least not before I gave up). Seriously.

*****

I really liked the story about Auri. She's one of my favorite characters of the series.
Hopefully we will get to know her better in the last part of the book.

Rothfuss has a nice reading voice.

... an P.Rothfuss. Man muss sowas halt mögen. Ist sicher nix für die "breite Masse".
