On a day like any other, in a world just like any other, Eli Johnson started his journey in life. It wasn't what he wanted to be doing, and it wasn't anything he was prepared for. But like it or not, life had begun.
In an effort to keep all his limbs attached to his body and avoid joining the army, Eli becomes an apprentice Guide. He's taken under the wing of two world-weary, former soldiers, Archer and Clayton on their last trip of the year. Together they travel over the Razorback Mountains to Yort. Little does Eli know, as he leaves behind the sleepy town of Roxatta, that it might be for the last time. What is absolutely for certain is none of them will ever be the same again.
