Unexpected find

I'm not sure, but I think I found this as a discounted option a month or two ago. Wow, was I ever surprised at the excellence of the characterizations, plotting, plot twists, the integration of RPG (I started playing in the late 1980s online) in a novel form, not to mention the narration. It intrigued me enough that I've listened to it three times (yes, three times, get over it ;-D) and I get some point I missed before every time. This is complex, yet engrossing, entertaining and enjoyable writing. Highly recommended. Sort of sci-fi/high-fantasy/meets Jim Butcher. I may have a new favorite author. Maybe.

Fantastic!

When you think about an RPG book, when you have played an RPG, you think that it would be boring/predictable, but this book took on an amazing approach. I couldn't wait to see what happened. Nick Podehl, by far, is one of the best narrators for a book that I have ever heard. Every character had a different voice, and sounded like there was a whole set of narrators. Well worth the purchase, just for that! He helped real-ize every emotion and feeling of the characters. I will be continuing this series.

A Delightful and Well Thought Fantasy Title

I've played a number of role playing games, table top and digital, over the years and I love the fantasy genre as well. Therefore, I came to this novel assuming I would like it. My high expectations were exceeded! I loved how the integration of game mechanics along with world building. The gradual discovery of new magic, skills and levels was also deligthful. I listened to a chapter or two each evening before going to sleep. A wonderful experience! I re-read part of this book on Kindle as well. Bravo to both to Aleron Kong for creating a fresh and engaging take on the fantasy genre and to Nick Podehl for narrating all the characters with so many different perspectives, I'm looking forward to starting the second volume of The Land later this month!

annoying

It's fun but I don't care for the stat readout every time the protagonist levels up it hinders the story and I couldn't finish it.

Wow, it's been a while.

So it has been a while since I've read a book like this. I can't even begin to explain the mental focused that this audio book envokes from me. The characters are so realistic, the main character especially, he is someone I can really relate to at least 70%. The story makes me curious and puts me on edge. I do have question but I have faith that they will be answered in the upcoming issues. Issues that I will be investing in as it is absolutely worth it.

Unbelievable series

First review I have ever written, but I wanted to give kudos to the author and narrator. Hard to believe that Dr. Kong was writing this in the evenings while still maintaining a busy physician practice during the day. Despite being self-published, the book was remarkably polished and the creativity and depth of The Land is truly something to behold (the next 6 books are just as good). And Nick Podehl's ability to create specific voices for all of the characters, then maintain those flawlessly throughout the lengthy books is Oscar-worthy.

Is that star rating a typo?

Really enjoyed the Ascend Online series and saw the number of ratings on this and thought it must be jut fantastic... Characters are paper thin, zero plot and spoiler next book is the same, Super slow and boring world building LitRPG. I would only assume by book 4 something might happen or develop into a real story? I even gave book two a try but same thing, still waiting for the story to develop. I know this is super harsh, but cannot for the life of me understand how this has so many positive ratings. If your looking for background noise while you sleep then give it a go.

Excessively brutal, slow pace, over the top

LitRPG bingo: - Building a town: Check - Magical tree: Check - Brutality and rape: Check - Morally ambiguous protagonist: Check - Takes one full book to clear a dungeon: Check - "His mouth dropped open when reading his notifications"-Occasions every 5 minutes: Check I've listened to quite a few LitRPG series on Audible recently. This one has quite a few torture, mutilation and rape scenes in it, which I didn't really appreciate. Also many many bad dick jokes. The protagonist is your typical power-hungry american guy, who walks into epic quests and world-events all the time - mostly just by chance. Story progression is awfully slow at times and a single combat might take a dozen chapters to finish. I always had the feeling the protagonist got his priorities somewhat wrong as he spends more time crafting his own weapons than actually administrating his village. "The Land" does have some quite unique and interesting characters though and I did actually end up listening to all 7 currently released books in the Chaos Seeds series. If you can stomach the gritty parts and don't mind the somewhat epic proportions and an ever-growing "to-do-list" this actually has it's good moments. Also Nick Podehl is a brilliant narrator. No complaints there.

Toller Sprecher, schlechter Autor

Also ein erzähltes Online-Rollenspiel. Mitsamt Stufenanstieg, Werten, Quests, Loot, etc.

Fazit: Toller Sprecher, Geschichte okay, Charaktere charakterlos.

First audio book I did not return

Initially, I started to use Audible for my son - Then I thought I could also try to find something good to listen to & I tried several books, but they all bored me. Whether it was the storyline itself of the narrator... Something never was right & I ended up returning book after book, I even canceled my subscription... And then, I don`t know how I found it, I ended up with this one - ... And this the first book that really caught my attention & interest! Yay. So yeah, I like the storyline & Nick is a great narrator. Strongly recommended :)

something new

I love the gamer focus and Nick Podehl is really doing a great job. I am hoping however that the main character shows more Dept in the next book. All in all a fun read/listen with a truly unique twist to fantasy.

The first tries of LitRPG

Aleron Kong started the genre of LitRPG, so it is forgivable that this is not on par with current authors - they could learn from his mistakes. I quite like the genre but in this book 10% is the endlessly repeating of meaningless stats. The story has some inconsistencies and, as mentioned before, only a rudimentary start of LitRPG. Don't expect an RPG like world coming true, it is more like a kid playing a game and telling you what he did.
