    Description

After a century of misunderstanding the differences between diet, weight control, and health, The Case for Keto revolutionizes how we think about healthy eating - from the best-selling author of Why We Get Fat and The Case Against Sugar.

Based on 20 years of investigative reporting and interviews with 100 practicing physicians who embrace the keto lifestyle as the best prescription for their patients' health, Gary Taubes gives us a manifesto for the 21st-century fight against obesity and diabetes.

For years, health organizations have preached the same rules for losing weight: restrict your calories, eat less, exercise more. So why doesn't it work for everyone? Taubes, whose seminal book Good Calories, Bad Calories and cover stories for The New York Times Magazine changed the way we look at nutrition and health, sets the record straight.

The Case for Keto puts the ketogenic diet movement in the necessary historical and scientific perspective. It makes clear the vital misconceptions in how we've come to think about obesity and diet (no, people do not become fat simply because they eat too much; hormones play the critical role) and uses the collected clinical experience of the medical community to provide essential practical advice. Taubes reveals why the established rules about eating healthy might be the wrong approach to weight loss for millions of people, and how low-carbohydrate, high-fat/ketogenic diets can help so many of us achieve and maintain a healthy weight for life.

This audiobook includes a downloadable PDF containing diagrams, lists, notes, and the bibliography.

Another must read by Gary Taubes

In 2007, Gary Taubes published Good Calories, Bad Calories. It was a many years long project in which he researched hundreds of articles and interviewed over 600 researchers and authorities. I have been a family physician for 42 years. I first read the book in 2013 and have since reread it multiple times. As I was reading it, I realized it was the most exhaustive treatise on diet and health ever written. It was not just another "eat this way and you will be healthy" book, but rather a scientific treatise on the basis of what causes obesity and what foods are truly fattening and what foods are actually healthy and unhealthy based on science and physiology. It challenged the accepted dogma that eating fat and cholesterol is the cause obesity and heart disease, and has, over time, become probably the most influential work inspiring the current low carb movement. In The Case For Keto, Taubes applies his insight into the science of obesity to guide the reader on a practical application of low carb, ketogenic diets to treat obesity and diabetes. In researching The Case for Keto, Taubes interviewed 100 practitioners who are applying LCHF, ketogenic diets in their practices and also shares their experiences and insights. If you want to learn more about the science supporting LCHF, ketogenic diets and how to safely and practically implement the diet, this book is a must read.

Excellent introduction to LCHF Ketogenic diets

This book is a great primer on LCHF eating and why it might make sense for a lot of people. I appreciate the way the argument was presented and found it very compelling. Learning how to think about how to eat is very important!

Great summaries of MD Perception if LCHF/Keto

I’m always interested in learning about perspectives of keto from the medical community. There’s so much dissent from most of the medical community about this type of eating and the effects on your bloodwork, so it’s refreshing to hear that more and more health experts are getting on board with this. I’m a nurse and have been doing a keto/carnivore diet for going on 2 years and I have never in my life felt better than when I’m eating keto. This book gives many anecdotal accounts of keto/LCHF successes and some are similar to mine, which reconfirm a what I know about this type of eating. You’ll feel reinsured about this type of eating when you listen the book. I’d definitely recommend, especially if you are new to keto and need some inspiration and motivation. Also, the narrator does an excellent job!

    Whiny

Overall the book is useful and the storyline progressed really well. The mixture of science and anecdote was welcomed and one cannot help but feel empathetic toward the struggle of those who struggle with what the author calls fattening easily. The one negative for this book is that it sounds really whiny. You can’t go a chapter without feeling like somehow you’re a part of the authors problem struggling with his own weight.

Great for science nerds who want to know why!

This book is a great primer for the "why" of Keto vs every other diets. I am sure there are others like me that need to know why not just "do it". It is becoming more and more evident there are folks like me who gain weight easily and if I ever want to get control of it, I MUST cut out the carbs.

My only problem - the pdf does not include all of the referenced documents. For example, several photos are referenced in Chapter 15 Making Adjustments - the photographs of means referenced are not in the PDF. This would have been helpful.

    Worthy of repeat reading

Full of great information. Makes a relatively complex system and pathway much simpler. It’s relatively simple but we might make it complex because we aren’t willing to be ALL in. As I had my conversion experience, I kept fearing I was going to be sick at some point. Never happened and now someone else has written about it. Many people can gain confidence by not feeling so alone.

very well thoughtout and through review

Well thought out and through review of the biological mechanisms of weight gain and fat utilization, and the most modern reacher into the topic of LCHF diets.

    Good but too repetitive

Compelling summary but the same message portrayed not three times, not a dozen times but felt five hundred times.
Strong proponent of low keto animal based nutrition. And trying to convince everyone by telling the same story again and again and again.
Tedious to follow up to the end.
