    Description

    Brought to you by Penguin.

What causes people to continually relive what they most want to forget and what treatments could help restore them to a life with purpose and joy?

In this audiobook, Dr Bessel van der Kolk offers a new paradigm for effectively treating traumatic stress.

Neither talking nor drug therapies have proven entirely satisfactory. With stories of his own work and those of specialists around the globe, The Body Keeps the Score sheds new light on the routes away from trauma - which lie in the regulation and syncing of body and mind, using sport, drama, yoga, mindfulness, meditation and other routes to equilibrium.

This inspiring and timeless audiobook is read by Sean Pratt.

    Don't waste your time

I forced myself to listen to the whole book but honestly this is the worst book I have ever read/listen to. the author is a psychiatrist who worked with patients who went through trauma, but the book is basically a list of all the different cases he has had (some of them are really harsh, not sure they are suitable for sensitive people). I have been through trauma myself and thought this book could give me answers or teach me something, but not at all.
Please don't waste your time/money listening to it, however if you want to know more about healing from trauma you could listen to "The Compassionate Mind" which is excellent and recommended by my therapist, and also "The Courage to Heal" about healing from sexual abuse.
But if you have been through trauma I suggest to see a therapist and eventually practice EMDR, this really changed my life. Take care of yourselves everyone :)

    Must read for health practioners.

Understanding that pain and suffering can be explained and treated from a traumatic point of view is really helpful and insightful. This text opened my eyes to new ways to approach psychological pain in my own healing process as well as in my therapeutic process.

Incredible read for self and community!

I’ve learnt so much about myself, trauma processing and building empathy for those around me. This book is comprehensive and practical even to a layman. It is a mirror to the reader and best read with an open mind, honest self reflection and hopefully will inspire A desire to heal oneself.

    Recommend this 100%

    excelent

unlike the Mockingbird, this book takes a long breath to get into. but it is worth it, and Reese Witherspoon's narration is priceless.

    amazing journey on understanding trauma

The body keeps the score brought so much needed light on the profound impact trauma has in life...

I loved the detailed narrative of the psychiatric, psychological ramifications and the holistic approach of how trauma should be address (the medication focused treatments that only address symptoms and not the underlying trauma on many diagnosis, let me speachless) was mind-blowing for me.

As trauma survivor, and with a sister with diagnosed bipolar disorder (which luckily found solace in yoga) this book puts in words the life lasting effects of the early trauma we suffered, but also highlights the extraordinary resilience we have to overcome adversity... specially with the right knowledge at hand.

I strongly recommend this reading to everyone because it won't leave you untouched...either you will find explanations of sensations you deal with daily, or will provide you with tools to be compassionate and helpful with those who need either guidance to seek professional support, or kindnesses to be able to hold their hand in the path to recovery.

It was not an easy read

I heard about this book a few times and thought I should read it. I didn't know how much I needed it to understand me and my family better. The last chapter was the most meaningful to me. Worth the 11 hours or so.

    Very eye opening

Definately must read. For everyone, with traumas or not. Makes you wander how is it possible that in out science oriented society, we already know so many things about the human organism, and yet fail to teach this basic "what it takes to be human" manual to everyone on the planet

Full of insights about how body and mind are connected

The author has a very good sense of how to best familiarize the reader/listener with this complex topic. Its scientific but still fun. There are a lot of carefully picked case studies to illustrate the topics addressed . Also BvdK provides a lot of hands on recommendations for therapists and patients alike.
I enjoyed listening to this book.
