    Don't waste your time

I forced myself to listen to the whole book but honestly this is the worst book I have ever read/listen to. the author is a psychiatrist who worked with patients who went through trauma, but the book is basically a list of all the different cases he has had (some of them are really harsh, not sure they are suitable for sensitive people). I have been through trauma myself and thought this book could give me answers or teach me something, but not at all.
Please don't waste your time/money listening to it, however if you want to know more about healing from trauma you could listen to "The Compassionate Mind" which is excellent and recommended by my therapist, and also "The Courage to Heal" about healing from sexual abuse.
But if you have been through trauma I suggest to see a therapist and eventually practice EMDR, this really changed my life. Take care of yourselves everyone :)

A masterpiece for all of humanity to read.

it's an amazing book. It could be very triggering to some, but I feel that almost all of us come out the other side of this book with a profound sense of the han condition. A must for veterans, a must for the bullied and the bully. a must for mother and fathers and teachers, for politicians and doctors and nurses. A remarkable accumulation of essential knowledge of the human condition.

    Must read for health practioners.

Understanding that pain and suffering can be explained and treated from a traumatic point of view is really helpful and insightful. This text opened my eyes to new ways to approach psychological pain in my own healing process as well as in my therapeutic process.

    amazing journey on understanding trauma

The body keeps the score brought so much needed light on the profound impact trauma has in life...

I loved the detailed narrative of the psychiatric, psychological ramifications and the holistic approach of how trauma should be address (the medication focused treatments that only address symptoms and not the underlying trauma on many diagnosis, let me speachless) was mind-blowing for me.

As trauma survivor, and with a sister with diagnosed bipolar disorder (which luckily found solace in yoga) this book puts in words the life lasting effects of the early trauma we suffered, but also highlights the extraordinary resilience we have to overcome adversity... specially with the right knowledge at hand.

I strongly recommend this reading to everyone because it won't leave you untouched...either you will find explanations of sensations you deal with daily, or will provide you with tools to be compassionate and helpful with those who need either guidance to seek professional support, or kindnesses to be able to hold their hand in the path to recovery.

Trigger warning - accounts of extreme trauma

I've heard so much about this book, and it has such a high rating. I'm surprised. I'm struggling to listen to it. Lots of examples of horrific incidents are given. Rape, children, being killed, etc, etc, etc. It's crazy to me that a book meant for trauma survivors would be this upsetting. I mean, I think it's very common for trauma survivors to be easily triggered. And a expert in the field of trauma should know this? Surely the examples don't have to be quite so gut-wrenching. It's as if the author tried his best to use the most disturbing accounts of trauma he has ever encountered as examples. Truly painful to listen to the horrors humans have done to each other. If you're a sensitive person, you might want to skip this. Holy hell. I've given up and am skipping ahead to chapter 13 - Healing from trauma. Hopefully no more horrific examples but actual helpful advice.

Full of insights about how body and mind are connected

The author has a very good sense of how to best familiarize the reader/listener with this complex topic. Its scientific but still fun. There are a lot of carefully picked case studies to illustrate the topics addressed . Also BvdK provides a lot of hands on recommendations for therapists and patients alike.
I enjoyed listening to this book.

    The best on Trauma

The book is packed with deeper understanding about Trauma and it's consequences in general. As someone that has had PTSD for over 18 years now i can say that this book holds weight and i feel understood by it. EMDR in particular was quite successful for me, other methods not so much. Talk therapy can only get you so far, unfortunately. Also it made me understand why despite my eagerness to learn i had difficulties with things sticking to me, also numbing with substances is also spot on. In the end the book motivated me to be more compassionate with myself, and i would recommend this book to anyone that either has Trauma or wants to understand the affliction.

    Everyone should read this

Not for the faint hearted, I struggled especially at the beginning, finding sympathy in some situations but as I listened on the knowledge and understanding grew. A profound insight into how trauma presents itself as well as how it manifests. After getting to know more it becomes clear why some things help and other rather harm traumatic people. Also the number of prople who suffered at least in some form traumatic circumstances is definitely high an we as a society would benefit greatly if more people read books like this and we would apply more of its recommendations.

too many details about traumatic experiences

just too many details about traumatic experiences. I felt retraumatised at some point. I don't know what's the point about that. why can't you just talk about clients experiencing a situation XYZ without getting into the details. it's very hard to get rid of the images in my mind now. there should at least be warning that this book could be triggering old memories in the body.
