Description

There are lots of things about weight training in general and barbell exercise in particular that can only be learned by spending way too many hours in the gym. And honestly, unless you're a gym owner, this is a really weird way to spend 75 hours a week.

Mark Rippetoe has been in the fitness industry since 1978 and has owned a black-iron gym since 1984. He knows things about lifting weights and training for performance that most other coaches and professionals have never had the chance to learn. This book of essays offers a glimpse into the depths of experience made possible through many years under the bar, and many more years spent helping others under the bar.

I get 'Stronger' just by listening to this.

I started lifting in 2016. Read, listen & watch so many gurus but none compare to the intelligent, sarcastic, well-spoken Mark Rippetoe. He is a gem! (In case you wonder, I only laugh at sarcastic jokes.)

Good listen if you want to get stronger

Like most collections of essays, they are hit and miss. Some are great, some are just Rip being Rip. But don't underestimate him or this book. A lot to be learned here.

Wish I read this 20 years ago

Mark Rippetoe has an entertaining communication style and great attention to detail in how the body should correctly move during strength training. If you're on the fence about getting this book, watch some of his YouTube videos and you'll see the value.

Wish I had known this 35 years ago.

But fortunately I’m now a convert and frequent his book Starting Strength in my salty garage gym as I’m resting between sets. He’s a teacher and a talker, but he keeps it a little bit humorous with occasional space alien 👽 jokes. Got to roll my eyes on his politics, but fortunately he doesn’t go there in this narrative of his years of using the barbell to train the human body to a stronger adaptation.
