Histoire
The Anti-Capitalistic Mentality by Austrian School economist and libertarian thinker Ludwig von Mises is an investigation into the psychological roots of the anti-capitalistic stance that is widespread in segments of the general population of the capitalist world. Von Mises suggests various reasons for this mentality, primarily his claim that free competition in the market economy allows no excuses of one's failures. Rather, he argues, it creates great incentive for one's desire for improvement and greater effort to succeed, as well as a greater reward for that success.

Like F.A. Hayek, Ludwig von Mises moved beyond economics in his later years to address questions regarding the foundation of all social science. But unlike Hayek's attempts, Mises' writings on these matters have received less attention than they deserve. Theory and History, writes Rothbard in his introduction, "remains by far the most neglected masterwork of Mises". Here Mises defends his all-important idea of methodological dualism: one approach to the hard sciences and another for the social sciences.

In For a New Liberty: The Libertarian Manifesto, Rothbard proposes a once-and-for-all escape from the two major political parties, the ideologies they embrace, and their central plans for using state power against people. Libertarianism is Rothbard's radical alternative that says state power is unworkable and immoral, and ought to be curbed and finally overthrown.

Human Action is the most important book on political economy you will ever own. The Scholar's Edition is the original, unaltered treatise (originally published in 1949) that shaped a generation of Austrians and made possible the intellectual movement that is leading the global charge for free markets.

For anyone interested in foreign affairs, this book will catalyze debate, and not only for Mr. Huntington's concluding scenario for World War III. He sees how this could happen if the U.S. mishandles an increasingly xenophobic and truculent China. Chinese assertiveness, Huntington argues, rises out of its felt grievances against a relatively weakening West. After China, the gravest challenge to the West is resurgent Islamic identity.

Most history is hierarchical: it's about emperors, presidents, prime ministers, and field marshals. It's about states, armies, and corporations. It's about orders from on high. Even history "from below" is often about trade unions and workers' parties. But what if that's simply because hierarchical institutions create the archives that historians rely on? What if we are missing the informal, less well documented social networks that are the true sources of power and drivers of change?

Histoire
Aristotle was the first philosopher to write ethical treatises. His best-known work in this field, The Nicomachean Ethics, consists of 10 books addressing the question of how the individual should best live. For Aristotle, ethics seeks to determine what makes a virtuous character possible, which is essential for a state of well-being. He describes a sequence of necessary steps to achieve this, such as righteous actions that promote the development of the right habits. He examines the moral virtues and their corresponding vices, like courage versus fear.

In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition - the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong. Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right.

In the 6th century AD, the Near East was divided between two venerable empires: the Persian and the Roman. A hundred years on and one had vanished forever, while the other seemed almost finished. Ruling in their place were the Arabs: an upheaval so profound that it spelt, in effect, the end of the ancient world. In The Shadow of the Sword, Tom Holland explores how this came about.

Once vast swathes of the globe were coloured imperial red, and Britannia ruled not just the waves but the prairies of America, the plains of Asia, the jungles of Africa and the deserts of Arabia. Just how did a small, rainy island in the North Atlantic achieve all this? And why did the empire on which the sun literally never set finally decline and fall? Niall Ferguson's acclaimed Empire brilliantly unfolds the imperial story in all its splendours and its miseries.

As the stock market crash of 1929 plunged the world into turmoil, two men emerged with competing claims on how to restore the balance to economies gone awry. John Maynard Keynes, the mercurial Cambridge economist, believed that government had a duty to spend when others would not. He met his opposite in a little-known Austrian economics professor, Friedrich Hayek, who considered attempts to intervene both pointless and potentially dangerous.

In this beautifully written and brilliantly reasoned collection of essays, Ayn Rand throws new light on the nature of art and its purpose in human life. Once again, she demonstrates her bold originality and her refusal to let conventional ideas define her sense of the truth. Rand eloquently asserts that one cannot create art without infusing it with one's own value judgments and personal philosophy - even an attempt to withhold moral overtones only results in a deterministic or naturalistic message.

Description
Published in 1922 during those dark and dreary years of socialism’s near-complete triumph, Socialism stunned the socialist world. Mises has given us a profoundly important treatise that assaults socialism in all its guises, a work that discusses every major aspect of socialism and leaves no stone unturned. A few of the numerous topics discussed include the success of socialist ideas; life under socialism: art and literature, science and journalism; economic calculation under socialism; the ideal of equality; and Marx’s theory of monopolies.
With this monumental work, Mises laid the foundations for free society. Socialism has influenced scores of influential thinkers, including Friedrich Hayek, Ayn Rand, and Milton Friedman. It is read over and over again today, all over the world, inspiring throngs of new defenders of freedom.

Everything you were taught is wrong
In an interesting way, Mises liquidates the propaganda that passes for education
in the United States. His work is the antidote for the propaganda you suffered
through for 12 + 4 +3 and then as a "licensed" professional or teacher or bureaucrat.

Unparalleled Refutation of Socialism
Ludwig Von Mises reveals a massive depth and breadth of knowledge in this book. I found it more than interesting that he chose an even and mild tone in his refutation of socialism. Additionally, Bernard Mayes was an excellent choice as the reader! My definite gratitude too Audible for making this volume available.

Mises is not for the fabled.
I found the overall content interesting and informative. however, it was a bit dry in parts and the narrator's British accent did not help. I found myself driving to listen to the contents to better understand socialism from an Austrian perspective. recommended to those who need to understand and dispute socialism in our current socio-political struggles to Champion the liberal agenda over socialism.

Spirited reading of an important classical text
Ludwig von Mises, alongside F. A. Hayak and probably in some circles even moreso than him, was a leader in the economic argument against socialism. There are important differences between Hayak's arguments and von Mises. The big one is that von Mises is much more concerned with the inability of central planning to adapt goods and services to need based on the lack of an ability to set prices. Hayak talks about this also, but nearly in the degree of detail. von Mises is usually principled, sometimes to extremes (although it is not a topic of his discussion, the "privatize the sidewalks" brand of libertarianism more typically hews back to LVM), but one notable place where he fails to stick to his principles is his treatment of race and differences of economies around the world. Here, he sounds more jingoistic than Hayak, and for that matter his view on race even seems dated compared to Adam Smith, who wrote in the late 18th century, but whose views on race are more progressive than LVM's ~150 years later.
At the same time, this book remains important. It has a very detailed analysis on Marxism, in particular (which pairs nicely, actually, with Piketty's treatment, coming from a very different ideological background as well as a very different point in time). Many of the central issues do remain relevant to the kinds of industries that are sometimes nationalized even in the modern era, such as healthcare, and whatever side one falls on the question of whether these institutions should be nationalized, von Mises does merit consideration.
The narrator is spirited, he delivers von Mises with an arrogance that seems appropriate to the author.
