Description

Make an audio pilgrimage to Harlem with Ethiopian and Swedish chef, TV personality, and restaurateur Marcus Samuelsson, and get to know the food, history, music, and - most importantly - the people of an iconic neighborhood that Marcus knows as his home and the home of his Red Rooster restaurant.

Special guests join Marcus each day of the week to cook, sip cocktails, and make their Harlem our Harlem, including Melba Wilson, Jelani Cobb, Bevy Smith, and Kevin Young, for starters.

For Wednesday, with writer Jelani Cobb, Marcus will recreate the short ribs he made for President Obama’s fundraiser at the Red Rooster and discuss the significance of the first African American President. With food historian Jessica Harris, Marcus will discover the African and Southern roots of his ingredients. He’ll make fried chicken with Harlem’s very own Charles Gabriel and visit La Marqueta with Spanish Harlem native Aurora Flores.

You’ll learn about Harlem’s amazing history, diversity, and current vibrant life and the institutions that are the pillars of the neighborhood - the Apollo Theater, the Studio Museum, and the Schomburg Center. Writers Isabel Wilkerson and Nicholas Lehmann explain the Great Migration from the South that brought mac and greens, new voters, and amazing creative talent to Harlem. And Dapper Dan talks about Harlem style.

And like Red Rooster itself, music provides a foundation for each day - from El Barrio Night’s Latin rhythms to Sunday’s Teenage Gospel Choir.

As an added bonus for Audible listeners, with purchase you’ll receive recipes from The Red Rooster Cookbook that are featured in Our Harlem.

Commentaires

"Our Harlem is an Audible Original adaptation of Samuelsson’s Red Rooster Cookbook with a few vital differences. In the print version, he tells us about the history, culture, and food of the remarkable place he’s chosen to call home. In the audiobook, he takes you there.” (Forbes)

"We listened to the full series and found it immersive, educational, and entertaining - not to mention packed with great recipes. Our one disclaimer: don’t listen on an empty stomach. The sound of frying chicken is too much to handle." (Food & Wine)

Amazing

As a foodie/blogger, and NYC resident, I absolutely loved listening to this immersive series. From the sweet sounds of frying garlic and rosemary to eavesdropping on conversations with journalists and community leaders talking about the history and culture of Harlem, this series made me hungry for more. I also appreciate that there been some effort to create a more multi modal experience with the recipes made available on the audible website. Very excited to see where this goes.

Interesting and personal take on Harlem

Who knew that in addition to being a world class chef Marcus Samuelson is also a talented story teller? In Our Harlem, Samuelson interviews people from all parts of Harlem, and paints a vivid mosaic picture of this uniquely important town within a town. In scope are The Great Migration, culture, music and the church, and of course, cooking and cocktails. All in all this was a really interesting series of Harlem stories.

Mouthwateringly Declicious & Fascinating

Really interesting immersion into the great food and culture -- and history -- of Harlem. Great music and recipes, Marcus Samuelson is the real deal. Authentic and revealing and a wonderful guide. The program is loaded with colorful and fascinating people from the arts, culture & politics worlds. I even followed the recipe for the ribs Marcus made for Pres. Obama. A fantastic 4th of July treat!

Format is wrong

Why is this an audiobook? Nope. Disappointed is all I can say. Listening to food fry while people talk...seems wrong to me.

A Caucasian gets to look in

Thank you Marcus. By listening to this Audible presentation, I got to look over your shoulder into Harlem and the black experience. It was an uplifting,, and a fun experience. From the sounds of crackling grease and frying meat to the stories about the great migration and the Harlem Renaissance, you regaled me with experiences within another culture. I never did find out how paella fit into the African palette, but that's because there was a freedom for your guests to talk about whatever seemed important at the moment. You were my guide, and I was profoundly moved and improved by the experience. (By the way, my Mom was a Samuelson.) Tack för dina vänliga ord!

I'm Headed to Harlem!

This book was an absolutely delicious listen. Just after finishing it I sent a link to it to several of my friends and I will definitely be headed to Harlem to eat. A wonderful blend of culture, history, food, music......all narrated by a man could become a voice artist should he ever get sick of cooking. Thank you Audible!

Awesome! A must listen. Harlem is History

This took me all the way home. And gives me much relief that Harlem is not lost and the history is still alive. I love that we still have ppl that care about Harlem and dedicate their lives to preserving it. Asè oooooo.
