    Description

From New York Times best-selling author Erik Larson comes his first venture into fiction, an otherworldly tale of intrigue and the impossible that marshals his trademark approach to nonfiction to create something new: a ghost story thoroughly grounded in history.

Pioneering psychologist William James leads an expedition to a remote isle in search of answers after a family inexplicably vanishes. Was the cause rooted in the physical world...or were there forces more paranormal and sinister at work? Available only on audio, because as Larson says, ghost stories are best told aloud.

A group of researchers sets sail for the Isle of Dorn in the North Atlantic in 1905 to explore the cause of several mysterious disappearances, most notably a family of four who vanished without a trace after a weeklong holiday on the island. Led by Professor James, a prominent member of the Society for Psychical Research, they begin to explore the island’s sole cottage and surrounding landscape in search of a logical explanation.

The idyllic setting belies an undercurrent of danger and treachery, with raging storms and unnerving discoveries adding to the sense of menace. As increasingly unexplainable events unfold, the now-stranded investigators are unsure whether they can trust their own eyes, their instincts, one another - or even themselves.

Erik Larson has written a terrifying tale of suspense, underpinned with actual people and events. Created specifically to entertain audio listeners, this eerie blend of the ghostly and the real will keep listeners captivated till the blood-chilling end.

Featuring Erik Larson reading his Notes for a Narrator.

Not a ghost story in my opinion.

Just scholars ( talking heads ) discussion ,for what they believe is a paranormal they are experiencing.

    What can I say?!

Mr. Larson is one of my personal favorites. After voraciously consuming The Devil in the White City and The Beast in the Garden, I jumped at the opportunity to read his take on a good paranormal story. I'm happy to report, as is the case with all his other work I've read, this is another excellent, gripping piece of work. Narration is tip top as well. Definitely check it out!

    ghost and mystery buff

I truly enjoyed the story. Perhaps I enjoyed it so much because I listened to the story close to Halloween. The narrator was splendid and his voice added to the mystery and excitement of the story.

Love Erik Larson; HATED this mess

Larson has authored some of the best historical fiction of the past 21st Century, but wow was this a steamer. Just a total whiff on every level from start to finish, proving that even the best have “off” days/years. At some point, though, I would have thought an editor would have stepped in an told him the truth and to punch reset. I didn’t care about the characters. Thought the pacing was Austenian in its sluggishness and never engaged.

    Great listen!

I really enjoyed the storytelling and the loose historical fictional aspects of the book. One of my first audible horror books and I truly enjoyed it. Woke up last night thinking there was something watching me sleep... So there is that. haha

    Dull

After reading the description, I was expecting a spooky ghost story, but what I got was a dull haunted house description. The end was exceptionally anticlimactic. Since this was an audiobook only, I was expecting a lot from the narration but it didn’t deliver either. The narrator made every character’s voice the same.

    Historical boo

Larson is primarily a history writer, and this first foray into fiction is wrapped in history. Some characters are real, some fictional. Set on a remote “abandoned” English island in an “empty” house, this is a classic boo story. And ghost stories are best experienced aloud, so we have an audiobook only release. I don’t believe in ghosts, but that did not stop me from immensely enjoying this book. A well told tale. Recommended.

Interesting but unable to see much of a novel. I do love other books by EE.

I enjoyed this book very much

This book is well written and Julian R-T is an expert narrator.
It is about evil, and how evil appears to materialize in different but recognizable forms.
