Description

He's everything I've never wanted - too young, too weird, too wild.

I wasn't impressed that I had to get my weekly massage from a guy with a toe ring. But when I discovered David Cooke's skills as a masseur were literally orgasmic, I couldn't stop thinking about him and his amazing hands, day and night. Especially at night.

He's full of surprises. And despite my bad behavior, David's just as eager to explore this chemistry between us. Turns out, there's a lot more to him than hemp pants and tattoos. If he's so wrong for me, why does being with him feel so right?

Oil and Water...

Oil and water may not mesh, but David and Seth do. He's everything I never knew I wanted...what a catch phrase. A little mystery, a little romance, and a well placed ring all serve as perfect ingredients for a great story. Excellent narration. Entertaining and enjoyable!!!

Amusing with a bit of facepalming

Overall the story is amusing, but it also made me facepalm a few times when Seth was being particularly stupid haha. He could be embarrassing at times in a way that made me a bit annoyed at him but on the other hand that also made him more real.
David... I would like to read the story from his point of view *small smile*
I actually grew rather fond of Molly too XD

I rather liked the narrator, I felt that he did a good job with the characters's different voices.

Rough and still adorable

Seth and David are two sides of the same coin, rough and hard to sweet and thoughtful but both are sexy as hell. This has a good story and a great narrator, the characters are believable and well crafted. It also had me laughing out loud at some parts and talking back to my headphones, "you did not just say that!" Very entertaining.

This was fun and lovely characters

Any additional comments?

Seth is taking care of his niece after his sister died, he's new to parenthood, and is slowly adapting to a life with a child in it.
One day at his weekly massage, he meets David, and has a orgasmic experience!!!
Those two were lovely as a couple, I liked them both :) The part of the story line with the photos, not a big fan of it, but oh well, I guess there was supposed to be some tension there...

Nice short story. Worth the purchase!

I purchased this mainly because of Shannon Gunn being the narrorator. He did such a good job on the Temptation series I looked for more books done by him. He did good with this book too, and the story kept me entertained!

Really enjoyed it

What made the experience of listening to Men of Smithfield: Seth and David the most enjoyable?

I really enjoy the narrator of the Men of Smithfield books. The voice of Quinn was a bit over-the top, but I thought Seth was perfection. It definitely added to my enjoyment of these books.

Who was your favorite character and why?

David. Some characters in these types of books can be fairly one-dimensional, but Seth was responsible and nurturing, yet wild and a risktaker at the same time. I liked this dichotomy.

Which scene was your favorite?

Maybe the scene in the alley. The sex scenes in this book are aggressive and hot. The scene in the alley set the tone of the book. Yet the book could also be really funny and sweet as well.

Toxic masculinity gets smacked with pink

This series keeps showing up in my Audible package and is hit or miss for me. This one was half and half. Seth is mostly a jerk. There might be reasons, but he is a jerk. There is almost no reason for David to like him. Their sexual chemistry was a happy surprise for them both but it was odd for this reader how it played out. What I saw as potentially abusive, David thought was hot. And apparently it takes a lot to quash a crush & Seth managed not to completely kill David’s before becoming slightly less of a jerk. Aside from his liking Seth, David is practically perfect in every way. It got annoying that David’s competence was continually surprising Seth, but again, he started to fix that too. It irked me that Seth’s money grubbing narcissistic ex, spouting the lamest of lame excuses for leaving “you don’t talk to me *enough*” was the reason he started to get clarity, because an ex saying that is almost always in the wrong. If I wasn’t between other series, I may not have finished this one, but it came around ok.

There’s a young niece/ward, Molly, & her dog. We mostly see Molly on her best behavior. This is because either the author is not familiar with kids, or Molly reacted to loss (prior to book) by becoming very obedient. It’s unclear. And some scenes were …awkward isn’t quite right… but the heavy curtain of toxic masculinity covered every Seth/Molly interaction for much of the book - aka Real Men don’t display emotion or touch & have disdain for anything female coded but really get irked by pink and pink adjacent things. Then at some point Molly has a nightmare and the dog never shows up. In my experience, when kids wake up noisy, dogs show up. The dog shows up in several scenes but aside from comic relief, doesn’t really have to be in the book so the author (or the main character, if one feels generous) kind of forgets the dog exists for large chunks of the book. Molly was integral to the story, but both she and the dog seemed to be wedged in a little sideways.

Possible spoiler: There were some hijinks/traumas that eventually blew over like tempests in teapots, thankfully, since they would have hurt David or Molly the most, despite being directed at Seth. This kind of thing is also brought to us by toxic masculinity - things the main character loves being treated as pawns or trophies to motivate the hero, rather than as independent characters who can be hurt. Again, the author makes a stab at rectifying this by ceding control of some damning photos over to David . It seems to me that the Author is trying to fix things but doesn’t seem to know the full extent of why something is bad. /spoilers

Heat: 2/5 There is a little m/m sex on page but not a lot. I hesitate to say it was slightly kinky but apparently they both enjoyed Seth pushing David around and treating him roughly without really communicating about anything first. This didn’t really escalate in later scenes but kind of got discussed but so…shrug. The sex was important to the plot because without it there would be no reason for David to like Seth after getting to know him.

Audio: I don’t know how much of Seth’s jerky nature I can ascribe to the text and how much is because if the sneering disdain conveyed by the narrator whenever Seth thought about other people. (People who treat serving staff like Seth does, deserve more than to get their food handled roughly.) Was he a jerk or was he just played that way? Both? The narrator also had some weird mispronunciations on occasion that should have been caught fixed. (ex: print sized instead of pint sized, or leaving out syllables). Aside from that, the quality was fine - sound was even throughout etc.

If you’re looking for a quick read

Review on 'Men of Smithfield - Seth and David'

The „Men of Smithfield“ stories are still on my regular re-listening list whenever I want an audio book with a great voice actor to make me feel good and smile on a rainy day.

After having lost his twin sister to cancer and becoming the sole parent for his 6-year-old niece Molly, Seth is completly out of his depth. While he is a cold, arrogant jerk at his job, and a judgemental prick, he is struggling really hard to get a grip on his grief, his failed relationship and to find a way into little Molly's heart. Meeting David further throws him off balance, as the younger man represents all, he finds weird (tattoos, toe and ear rings, juggeling a masseur, waiter, author and artist job). Still Seth is inevitably drawn to David. They may be opposite in appearence but both men are very similar inside. Before they can work on their blossoming relationship, they have to find out, who is blackmailing them with compromising pictures and why Molly's birth-father suddenly shows up. Then the excitment spikes even further as Molly gets kidnapped.

This time L.B.Gregg focuses on Seth and David's story, I dare say the couple carrying the most inner baggage of all her „Men of Smithfield“ pairings. Although Seth deserved my compassion, it took me quite a while to warm up to him because he had been such an egoistic, snappy person for most the time.Slowly Seth learns never to judge a book just by its cover! David on the other hand, is all sweet and cute right from the beginning.

Shannon Gunn has outdone himself again with narrating this story and so contrary MCs. Gosh, that massage table scene and the lavendar smell will stick to my memory like Finn's Halloween costume in the pervious episode. Mr.Gunn even does the kids'voices well without over exaggeration. Thanks to his interpetation the dynamics between Seth and David truely comes alive.
