    Description

Shy, young heiress Lady Lily Rutherford is in no hurry to marry. She dreams of true love and a real courtship. But when disaster strikes, she finds herself facing a scandal-forced marriage to her rescuer, Edward Galbraith, a well-known rake.

Despite his reputation, Lily is drawn to the handsome Galbraith. In the gamble of her life, she agrees to marry him, hoping to turn a convenient marriage into a love match.

As heir to a title, Galbraith knows he must wed, so a convenient marriage suits him perfectly. But there is a darkness in his past and secrets he refuses to share with his tender-hearted, young bride. All Lily's efforts to get close to him fall on stony ground, and in desperation, she retreats to his childhood home - the place he's avoided for nearly a decade.

Must Lily reconcile herself to a marriage without love? Or will Galbraith realize that this warm-hearted, loving girl is the key to healing the wounds of his past - and his heart?

    Contains mature themes.

The characters say the main female is not stupid

but the writer makes her seem very naive and stupid. Who tries to travel back to London in an unsafe carriage to be "independent" just after being abducted because she cannot write nor count. That's clever! yes please come kidnap me again I am so strong. The woman performing as Lily was also a very poor choice.

An average marriage of convenience story

Setting: England, various places, but mostly London 1811 (prologue), 1818 (main story)
    Genre: Romance
Lady Lily Rutherford is an 18 year old semi-literate heiress described as “curvy”. She and her sister Rose were sent away to school when their widowed father found out about Lily’s dyslexia (not given that name, but certainly described) where there was at least one fellow student who knew about her difficulty with reading (dyscalculia was not described, but I’ll assume it was present since about 40-50% of dyslexics have the condition). Given that, why was it not common rumor, first at school then in Society after her come out? That is just a quibbling problem I have with this, among others. Our Hero, Mr Edward “Ned”Galbraith, is a war veteran who refuses to return to the ancestral pile (I don’t understand why, as an Earl’s heir, he was not referred to as Lord, even without a courtesy title). The why of his refusal is the mystery. He is a gorgeous rake who turns up kind when he inadvertently rescues Lily from a dire situation. Speaking of the dire situation, despite the family’s effort to keep it all quiet, Edward ends up having to marry Lily to save her good name (and to keep her sister and niece from suffering ruin by association). The good old marriage of convenience trope.
I generally enjoy a marriage of convenience story, but not this one. Why? Because between the “dire situation” and the resulting marriage there is a verbose half a book. I don’t mind a slow burn in romance, actually prefer it, but this was so slow it was a dying cinder. Too much head time, even in the midst of the action. And speaking of heads, the change of point of view from the h/H to secondary characters was distracting and irritating.
Another issue is with our heroine. Aside from being able to ride well, which plays no importance in the book, Lily has no redeeming qualities. She is fat (by Regency standards — think about the dress style), and she cannot read. She is infantilized by other characters, as if they think the dyslexia makes her simple. Although she was able to partially save herself from the dire situation, for most of the book she is mostly a “go along to get along” kind of character. In fact, none of the characters come across as fully three-dimensional.
Probably the biggest issue I have with this book is the length. There are too many intrusive and passive scenes that contribute to an overall sluggish pace. In my opinion, the book could probably have been cut to no more than 8 hours by editing out the dross. The narrator, Alison Larkin, added nothing to the dynamic. Her voices and pacing did not draw me into the story.
But besides the verbosity, the basic plot is good. There is one instance of “stupid as a plot device” (and that is just her trusting the wrong person), but it was necessary to get her into the dire situation. It had to be there to get the action moving. Also, the grammar and usage are (delightfully) correct.
Overall, this is an average book. Not terrible, but not so good that you’ll want to add it to your personal collection for a repeat read/listen. In other words, get it from Audible Escape or your local library.

    Sweet story

These romances all use the same wording, plot ploys, and generalizations, but I still enjoyed this one for a light story in the background. Too much sex for my taste, but at least there weren't hours of misunderstandings or lengthy internal thoughts as some romances are unfortunately filled with. The narrator did a fine job. She mispronounced a couple of terms but those were easy to overlook.

    A Treasured Story

Call me a lightweight, but this story invoked strong emotions.........tears, fullness of heart, fear and anger with the villains, and anguish for those blaming themselves for situation out of their control. I may have to purchase this book to keep in my own home to read again. A very touching story with positive advice to seize happiness whenever one can.

    Torn

I’m torn because this author is seemingly flawless, but the first one was so much better than this one. Maybe it’s because there were so many more characters to introduce? Either way, another gem!!

    Pretty darn good

I like this series. Problem is that the mystery is interesting but often gets put in the back burner. This one was a bit more exciting. The formula is even more formulaic than usual. Marriage of convenience. Woman falls quickly in love. We all know man is in love too but he is in denial and she can’t believe it. Then she is missing or in danger and he realizes he totally loves her. One thing that saves these for me is there is some day to day living where H and H get to know each other. I’d say worth a listen but I’d start at the beginning of the series.

    Very enjoyable

As with previous books I have listened to by author Anne Gracie, I enjoyed this one . I laughed and chuckled my way to the end. I must say that while I enjoy the story and the characters, both are brought to life by the narrations of Alison Larkin. All I can say is she is "simply delightful".

    Wonderful

Likable characters, interesting plot, great secondary characters, strong romance. My only quibble would be the narrator. She was wonderful, dramatic, excellent at distinguishing voices so you always knew who was speaking! But I think she mispronounced the word for party which in those days was pronounced “rowt,” not “root”! And ton, which is French and easy to pronounce in French- sounds more like tone than ton.

    PERFECT narration! WONDERFUL series!

WONDERFUL! I am a huge fan of Jane Austen and bought this because the narrator was the same as my favorite Jane Austen narrator - Alison Larkin who has read all of Austen's novels and I just love her voice and the depth and lightness that she brings to Austen - and the wit. I loved Alison Larkin's narration of Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice with Songs from Regency England and I was in the mood for more Regency fare and I found this. And I am so glad I did! I just found out that Anne Gracie has a whole other series too. The Spring, Autumn, Winter and Summer Bride series ALSO read by Alison Larkin! Heaven! What a find! Loved this.
