Description

Audie Award Finalist, Original Work, 2016

Based on the best-selling, award-winning graphic novel series Locke & Key - written by acclaimed suspense novelist Joe Hill (NOS4A2, Horns) and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez - this multicast, fully dramatized audio production brings the images and words to life.

A brutal and tragic event drives the Locke family from their home in California to the relative safety of their ancestral estate in Lovecraft, Massachusetts, an old house with powerful keys and fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them. As siblings Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode Locke discover the secrets of the old house, they also find that it's home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all....

Featuring performances by Haley Joel Osment (Entourage, The Sixth Sense), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Kate Mulgrew (Orange Is the New Black, Star Trek: Voyager), Joe Hill, Gabriel Rodriguez, and Stephen King (The Stand, 11-22-63), as well as a cast of more than 50 voice actors, this audio production preserves the heart-stopping impact of the graphic novel's astounding artwork through the use of richly imagined sound design and a powerful original score.

*Locke & Key contains explicit language and adult situations.

Critiques

"The concepts in this production, based on a graphic novel, are perfectly executed by a full cast.... Kate Mulgrew leads the way with her perfect portrayal of an ancient grandmother with an evil streak." ( AudioFile)

I WANT MY MONEY BACK!

This book was just a comic book that drags on and on and on. It is very difficult to follow because of all the different readers, some of which put me to sleep as soon as they started reading.

Hated it

This story was too hard to follow. Too many character voices all over, and horrible acting. Not for a second was this a believable story.

Couldn't get through the first couple of chapters

What would have made Locke & Key better?

When a full cast recording is made there should be a narrator. Don't make narration internal dialogue. This can be very annoying. Especially if those characters are children. A good example of a full cast recording would be that of American Gods. Or World War Z. This recording Was too irritating to even get through so I can't even tell you if the story was good or not. I got to the part, very early on, where a 6 year old was pushing a chair up to a shelf to grab something. That child becoming breathless in his struggle to move the chair and describing that battle was more than I could bear.

Very Disappointed

Mr. Hills previous book, "NOS4A2" was so good and I wrongly expected a good book. For me it was predictable, lacked imagination and I would have to say adolescent. The problem is I wouldn't allow my adolescent child or grandchild to read it because of the language, story line and violence. I do not recommend this book.

poor story and performance

this is more of a radio performance of a play than an audio book. the sorry drags out and is convoluted. couldn't finish listening to it which is VERY unusual for me, I can usually force myself to at least finish an audible hoping it will get better.

It's a mess

Ihave a feeling I'd really like the graphic novel. But the audiobook is a mess. There's very little direction or narration of who is saying what. So it's just kind of a guess sometimes as to who is speaking and what is happening. There's lots of sound effects but I often couldn't tell by the sound effect what was happening. At one point a character changes gender and then I was completely lost as to who it was that was speaking. Overall I found the audiobook to be so confusing that I finally stopped listening. Maybe if I listened to it as I read along with the graphic novel I'd enjoy it more.

Couldn't finish this!!

The story started out pretty good but soon fell apart. The sound effects were irritating and hard to follow. Too unbelievable even for a ghost story. I will be getting my credit back for this one.

Locke & Key

This is performed as s play. Doesn't work in an audible book format. Horrible story. Everybody screaming, you cannot tell who is doing what. Forget it!'

Don't bother

Would you try another book from Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez and/or the narrators?

no way

What do you think your next listen will be?

JD Rob

Any additional comments?

I thought that the characters were too cliche and didn;t fit with the ages of the character

Confusion?

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No, not as an audio book anyway.

Would you recommend Locke & Key to your friends? Why or why not?

Again, not as an audio book.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of the narrators?

I am not sure that the problem is the group of narrators.

Do you think Locke & Key needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Difficult to tell.

Any additional comments?

I am old enough that "graphic novels" were not a part of my early reading experience and maybe that is why I had such trouble. I am sure they are trying to depict what is seen in the frames, but I found the CONSTANT sound effects and noise incredibly distracting, mostly because often I could not tell what those sounds were supposed to be. Without visuals they were frequently lost on me.

I feel like the narrators did a decent job, but with such a variety of characters I often got lost as to whom I was listening. Overall the story may have been fine, but even though I struggled through the entire book, I am not sure I could give you a very accurate synopsis of what happened. Very confusing. Not only do I not recommend this book, I am afraid I would not recommend ANY graphic novel be converted to audible form.

Story OK, but bad production quality

Especially in action sequences you just have no clue what happens, because of bad audio design. There are too few audio clues that make sense. Many characters just sound alike.
