Description

Audie Award Finalist, Original Work, 2016

Based on the best-selling, award-winning graphic novel series Locke & Key - written by acclaimed suspense novelist Joe Hill (NOS4A2, Horns) and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez - this multicast, fully dramatized audio production brings the images and words to life.

A brutal and tragic event drives the Locke family from their home in California to the relative safety of their ancestral estate in Lovecraft, Massachusetts, an old house with powerful keys and fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them. As siblings Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode Locke discover the secrets of the old house, they also find that it's home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all....

Featuring performances by Haley Joel Osment (Entourage, The Sixth Sense), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Kate Mulgrew (Orange Is the New Black, Star Trek: Voyager), Joe Hill, Gabriel Rodriguez, and Stephen King (The Stand, 11-22-63), as well as a cast of more than 50 voice actors, this audio production preserves the heart-stopping impact of the graphic novel's astounding artwork through the use of richly imagined sound design and a powerful original score.

*Locke & Key contains explicit language and adult situations.

Critiques

"The concepts in this production, based on a graphic novel, are perfectly executed by a full cast.... Kate Mulgrew leads the way with her perfect portrayal of an ancient grandmother with an evil streak." ( AudioFile)

I really tried to like it

I finally gave up on finishing this book. The musical interludes were wayyyy to long for my taste. I also couldn’t get into it. After a couple of hours I decided I was done.

It's a mess

Ihave a feeling I'd really like the graphic novel. But the audiobook is a mess. There's very little direction or narration of who is saying what. So it's just kind of a guess sometimes as to who is speaking and what is happening. There's lots of sound effects but I often couldn't tell by the sound effect what was happening. At one point a character changes gender and then I was completely lost as to who it was that was speaking. Overall I found the audiobook to be so confusing that I finally stopped listening. Maybe if I listened to it as I read along with the graphic novel I'd enjoy it more.

I hated this production

The story may be good. I cannot listen to enough of this to know how it turns out. This is the most juvenile sounding recording I have ever endured. The music adds nothing to it and the folks saying this is an old time radio production, which made me want to listen, must have never actually heard one. I listened for an hour and gave up.

Mind you, I like Joe Hill's writing, but this production reminds me of a high school project that pulled a D.

How NOT to Produce an Audio Book

This is a perfect example of how NOT to handle an audiobook. It is so OVERPRODUCED that it is IMPOSSIBLE to get engaged in the story. Too much music, too many different actors, too many sound effects. JUST TOO MUCH. It would be like watching television without a picture. Too much happens without any exposition. The sorry fact is that I wanted to experience this book. The overblown production beat me within the first few minutes.

I really tried to like it.

It started great, with excellent narration from a named cast including Maslany and Osment.. Then, slowly but surely, it became very confusing, and boring. I am sure this will be more entertaining and clearer as a movie. But as an audio book, it got me frustrated and lost, and I did not finish it after spending over 8 hours of listening.

I am a Huge Joe Hill Fan

So, Please Hear Me Out
I believe I have bought and read every Joe Hill book on the market. I love the guy. It will take more books, before I know if I like him better then his dad, but he has a good start.

FREE
Right now this is free and it might not stay that way, so by all means get it.

The Graphic Version is Better.
This is a full cast with music and sound effects and that is all good. Stephen King even does a walk on. For me doing this book this way, made it sound more young adult then it is meant to be. Yes, graphic novels are not for old guys like me, but they audio version comes off as a little silly and over done. At times during the screaming (which is blood curdling) it is easy to get lost on who is doing what. Since it is not done in a novel version, there is a lot that seems missing. A novelization of this would probably work out great. Gabriel Rodriguez does the art work and it is art. The art adds a lot or is the whole story. After listening, see if you can find the book, you will see what I mean. Having the graphic novel also gives you the ability to take your time and admire the art and the story. I just feel the graphic novel is more fulfilling.

Hated it

This story was too hard to follow. Too many character voices all over, and horrible acting. Not for a second was this a believable story.

Very Disappointed

Mr. Hills previous book, "NOS4A2" was so good and I wrongly expected a good book. For me it was predictable, lacked imagination and I would have to say adolescent. The problem is I wouldn't allow my adolescent child or grandchild to read it because of the language, story line and violence. I do not recommend this book.

Couldn't finish this!!

The story started out pretty good but soon fell apart. The sound effects were irritating and hard to follow. Too unbelievable even for a ghost story. I will be getting my credit back for this one.

Locke & Key

This is performed as s play. Doesn't work in an audible book format. Horrible story. Everybody screaming, you cannot tell who is doing what. Forget it!'

Story OK, but bad production quality

Especially in action sequences you just have no clue what happens, because of bad audio design. There are too few audio clues that make sense. Many characters just sound alike.
