Description

Having survived the first wave of invading players, Oren now seeks to strengthen his clan. With the Breeder's Den destroyed and most of Goblin's Gorge's resources devoted to rebuilding, his best hope lies in creating an army of golems. But for that, he needs Viridium, a rare metal that can only be obtained from hobgoblin towns, where Oren and his clan of goblins are viewed as nothing more than potential slaves. To make his way in the game, and to defeat his former guild, Oren's ingenuity alone will not be enough. He will need to conquer his deepest fears and tap into his inner monster.

Strange ending to the trilogy

This book does fall off relative to the other 2 in the series. As a LitRPG style book, it follows many of the conventions of this genre, and indeed the world established continues from the other 2 in the series. Without trying to give too much away, I'll try and detail out some of the issues as to why this book has gotten so many negative reviews as compared to the other 2, though you may infer some heavily hinted at spoilers from this review, if not directly outlined....

First off, there is the whole "quest line" as described at the end of book 2- the MC takes a trip to a hobgoblin city to establish a trade route, to eventually try to be able to see the ultimate expression of his sphere golem creations. This whole thing feels little more than a side quest, but fully takes up roughly 2/3rds of the book- it's considerably more tedious and less interesting without the stakes that were in the other 2 books. It's not completely horrible, but it just doesn't hold your interest. Eventually, the "dread totem" continues to build and plan for the betterment of his people and his eventual revenge against his old guild, the "manapulators" in the last part of the book, which is much like the storyline from other 2 books had been headed.

Second, the last big battle in this book is accompanied by a great amount of expanded sound effects, and even a game themed soundtrack that plays alongside the narration during the battle. It's ridiculous and annoying, subtracting from the overall enjoyment of the audio performance as opposed to adding to it (IMHO)- it's just too "over the top".

Lastly, the apparent conclusion to the series wrapped up in the final 2 hours of the book. The V.i. storyline comes to fruition, and the whole plot line of the 3 books takes a radical shift into a new direction. The characters that you invested in over the 3 books are not well wrapped up in terms of their story arc, to the point that you wonder if this really is the end of the trilogy or not. If it is, then it's extremely unsatisfying, as I don't think anyone (with the exception of Vic) winds up with a fully resolved conclusion.

I suspect that we'll get a 4th book in the series perhaps, as this just does not feel like a satisfying ending, but that will be completely up to the author. Exactly what he has planned for this world and these characters from here out (if anything) is anyone's guess.

Good series that falls apart spectacularly

I really enjoyed reading/listening to these books, so it became that much more disappointing by the utter garbage that was an ending. I’m not sure how it can even be redeemed in a 4th book outside of telling everyone to pretend the ending of the third book was a bad totem dream.

Absolutely hated the ending

The last two chapters were awful, plot points were ignored, and the build up to the ending wasn't even there. It totally fell flat. I feel like I wasted my time on this one. The first two books were amazing, this one, not so much.

Not a trilogy

I bought these books based on them being advertised as a trilogy...It wasn't what I usually bought, but thought I would get a conclusion. I don't fault the author...It is a great story, well contrived, but Adible sheesh...this could be a 10 book series...and to call it a trilogy....is not honest for prospective readers.

The M Night Shyamalan of LITRPG

This is not a compliment in any way.

This series is trying to shock you with the typical 1 twist wonder that you only see from crappy directors above. I am actually dissappointed because not only did I see this coming, I was actually hoping it wouldn't happen. Now that is has, I see the huge lost potential in such a unique idea for a book.

I am starting to not like the main character and would have preferred more of the book to be about Rastia and her mission. There was so much potential for exploit in such a flawed system, I'm surprised the author didn't capitalize on it. All that was accomplished was a mission that was doomed to fail from the start, and only through dumb luck did it all turn out in the end. Sad

As was said before by other commenters, the ending was bad. My suggestion is to skip to the end to save yourself the 14 hours of buildup that turns out to be worth nothing, because it all goes to waste. Terrible letdown for fans. Might as well told us that the entire book is a dream and the main character wakes up just to forget it 2 hours later...

The one good thing that came out of the ending is that Vic is no longer going to be around and annoying as ever. Would rather have the Aussi guy take over permanently, He was awesome!

Come on Shemer, you can do better!

Bad ending, disappointing sound effects

I did not believe my eyes when I saw the 3rd book of the series up on audible. I got it and listened to it immediately. I was surprised to hear the annoying sound effects that don't even match the sound they are supposed to portray. It was very distracting and out of context. I guess it would've been better without them.

the story however not what I was expecting, I was used to a certain standard and suspense. whereas this book was boring and full of side quests that even got the main character bored. it seems as though the author gave up on the story and just wanted to finish it.

I wanted to see the breeder den back online so we can learn about new classes and have different characters added to the village. the village was one of the things I loved about this book because we got to see it being built from scratch. but here it was ignored and left behind all for a non essential resource ( the viridium ).

totally let down, I hope this is just a filled in the series.

Disappointing

Loved the series, but this final instalment was a vast disappointment. About 3/4 of this book took place in an area that held little to no investment for (me at least) the reader, coupled with a high quantity of audio editing errors, especially prevalent in the first few chapter, the sickening overuse of auto-tune to make Vic's voice (altering it to a disturbing degree from the remainder of the series) only ever accomplished to fuel my contempt. The final battle had some nice editing and effects bit this does not suppress the more than 13 hours of poor quality presented in this audio book. The ending felt extremely rushed and unsatisfying, leaving more questions than answers about the future that we will likely never get answered. If you are invested in this series (as you should be after reading or listening to the first two instalments of it) and still want to proceed with it.. Consider yourself warned.

Above Average story.. if you ignore the end.

Great voice artists. Unique sound effects. Intriguing story. However, very unsatisfying - OPEN end. I don't mind open ends if most things of importance are somewhat settled but the author decided to pull a cheeky one on the listener and drastically changed the story dynamic without any kind of explanation or closure, which I find immensely irritating.

His former work was superb.. this one devalued itself with this kind of ending.

I still recommend this, because 96% of the story was enjoyable - but the last chapters, well.. if you like massive cliffhangers (with months to wait for the next sequel) and irritating endings - this is a no brainer for you.

A very mixed bag

The Story in itself is pretty good (only one part which the author has been attacked for heavily really sucks). Still about 15h of the book is good story vise. The problem is the audio.

The audio is mixed alot. Which means different audio takes have been made to cover mistakes made by the reader. The problem is - its very notable. The Audio level and balance is off and it really bothers me alot.

Also someone made the choice to add very poor soundeffects to stuff like spells and attacks. not allways just sometimes. The Audio is faded and very poor. Its stock-sounds at the very best and is irritating like hell.
