Description
My name is Norah Canivan, and for 50 years I’ve kept a secret.
It is a secret about the girl I discovered hiding on our sorry patch of land - the girl in the tattered green dress who was running from something - and someone.
The Girl in Green brought something different into my young life. And something darker. And when she died, nothing was ever the same after.
For 50 years, only I’ve known what really happened to The Girl in Green.
And now, these many years later, my secret may kill me.

Somewhere along the way, the story changed
Somewhere along the way, the story changed from a historically accurate tale of compelling characters--good and evil--surviving and even thriving in a difficult landscape into a weirdly supernatural and misogynistic horror/fantasy tale. It is not as if the writer lost control of the novel. The prose is strong and in retrospect, the ending makes strange and otherworldly sense, but it is that shift that keeps bugging me. Did I just miss something? The book is not magical enough to be magic realism, but it isn't realism, either, nor does it strike me as particularly postmodern. I don't usually care about categories. I think I am just trying to get a grip on the novel.
The reader was fine, the prose enjoyable, but I just keep wondering why I am so disappointed.

loved this! fun and macabre. Narrator is amazing!
I will definitely read this author more. The story was a winding mysterious path that I was sad and delighted to reach the end of.

Sucked me In & Held Me Captive
The strong, folksy-yet-quick-witted main character drew me in and then the story she unraveled kept me hooked. Norah is nobody's fool, but she let slide just the right number of subtle hints at something dark and possibly supernatural to keep me curious - and, I admit, a little spooked. I love it when an author's twists truly surprise me and this one sure did. In fact, I found myself a little miffed.
I have read Fischl's other novels and he did not disappoint this time with his ability to bring a reader/listener into the time and place of the characters in his stories. I fell behind on my other listening, because I couldn't let this rest.
Terry Donnelly really brought Norah to life for me.

Solid 3 stars
Solid 3 stars =
Narration was good, not distracting but not great
Story was interesting and kept my attention, wanting to know what the secrets were and what really happened. Towards the end of the book the aspect of historical fiction changes to something darker only hinted at earlier on.
The ending,.. ever been on a mountain road with kiss your backside type of curves? You know the ones where it's a complete u turn followed up again and again. Yea... that's what happened in the book too. First twisty bit I kind of figured, but the Second, I didn't see coming, Third twisty bit was expected after the first two but still twisted. And the actual ending... like coming off that mountain road a little motion sick and a little frightened and little relieved to be done.

very well written and acted out
Wow! What a twist!
This is a very well written book. The story is thoughtful and detailed and its easy to lose yourself in this world- though it can be a bit longwinded in places. But, that just flows in with how the story would go if seen and explained by the characters within.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The VA was absolutely perfect! A great read and listen.

Wow, what an ending
Mr. Fischl is a really good writer of dark fiction and the characterizations are wonderful. I felt the book dragged a bit in places for an audio book, but the story sets up your expectations and then is full of twists and turns at the finish. A good read.

An entertaining read!
This book drew me in from the start and didn’t let go. The character development is excellent and the Canavan’s home quickly felt as familiar as an old memory. Donnelly does a lovely job bringing these complex characters and places to life.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an entertaining read that keeps you engaged from beginning to end.
