Auditory overload.

Having a large cast is great. But so much audio effects and the never-ending music makes it very hard to 1) get into the book 2) follow what is going on.

Great effort with potential, not the best executed

There are many who are confused by this, so I feel I have to break it down, Barney style. Let's first start with the fact that this isn't an audiobook. It's a drama special. If you go into this with the understanding that this is more like a radio drama and not a book being read to you, then you would be correct. Not sure why some monkeys are having a hard time understanding that this isn't a book, but there you go. The Good: Well, it's another ExForce story, and R.C. Bray is involved. If you've made it all the way up to this point of the series, you already know generally what to expect. If you thought this would be a great jumping on point for this series, you'd be seriously mistaken. Also, Podium is trying out something new with this audio drama. We have to given them credit for that. I think generally their work show promise, and would consider listening to their future audio dramas if it lines up with my interests. The Bad: To be fair, some of the audio choices weren't the best. Especially at the beginning, some of the background audio was distracting music where is should (in my opinion) have been more ambiance noise. That seemed to thankfully taper down as the drama moved forward, but then pops up jarringly a few times later. Also, the over-dramatic voice work to emphasize action was ... well, over-dramatic. The Meh: I guess I have to say this... I don't think they used all the guest actors to their full potential. I think the work that Zachary Quinto did was good. Kate Mulgrew was a daring choice for Nagatha, but with little voice change, it didn't pay off for me. It sounded too much like Captain Janeway, not like an old British woman... er, AI. The voice actor playing Smythe didn't quite do it for me. And Adams, while I think cast well, doesn't giggle as much as portrayed I think. When I go through the series again, I'll listen to it. It wasn't offensive, but it wasn't the best. Will I go out of my way to specifically listen to this? Not likely. This was decent enough, any my six hours weren't wasted.

Good story but too much everything else.

I liked the idea of the story, but it got lost in all the audio effects. Sometimes it was hard to hear the narration over the noise. I love the series and never tire of listening to them, I can't wait for the next installment.

Stupid Old Time Radio Drama

Old radio dramas have gone the way of margarine and 8-track tapes for good reasons. This presentation is muddy, loud, difficult to understand, and basically stupid. Inane 8th grade humor seems even more out of place in an intense battle scene. The previous audiobooks have all been narrated by R.C. Bray who has was exceptional in this entire series. I would have MUCH preferred skipping the amateur theatrics and just have R.C. Bray narrate the book. The book is way too short. I'd recommend skipping this one.

Couldn’t hear without backtracking

Background sounds made this difficult to listen to when in the car (my normal listening time). I prefer a narrator that I can tune the sound system to for the book. Good story; I know they worked hard on the performance but please refrain from doing an opera again

absolutely amazing

this is one of the most fun books I've ever read, I have a feeling that I'm going to end up reading through the entire series again just to get back to this book if I could give it 20 Stars I would

Yikes

Really proud that I powered through and finished this one. The cringe-worthy writing and production made me give up a couple of times, but in the end, I'm glad I finished it. ExForce neophytes should probably skip(py) this lemon in an otherwise enjoyable (if a bit repetitive) series. I look forward to the story returning to its regular format and forgoing all the "special" effects and voice "talent". (Sorry voice actors, I know this wasn't your fault!)

Please no more

The story was overall pretty good. And individually the narrators all performed well. But, I absolutely hate these audio dramas. Between all of the buzzers in alarms and sound effects and cheesy awkward laughs it's just too much. Until I listened to this I didn't really know what the kids meant when they used the word "cringey". But now I do.

Sound mixing was quite poor.

I get that this is an audio drama and not an audiobook. I have spent many hours listening to old radio audio dramas and they can be wonderful. But this? At several points, all I could hear was a cacophony. During those times I should have been hearing dialogue with backgound noise/music. What I got, upsettingly frequently, was noise with dialogue that I couldn't understand in the background somewhere. That should not happen. I love Skippy. I genuinely enjoyed the story. Mulgrew as Nagatha really fit to me and I loved hearing her cut loose. RC Bray, as always, was fantastic. In fact, each of the actors performances was wonderful with a couple of notable exceptions. But what can a performer do when their performance is drowned out after they gave it? I, sadly, can only recommend this with warnings attached.

Overproduced

I have loved all of the books in this series and RC Bray has been amazing, which allowed me to develop the characters in my head. Unfortunately, I wasn’t really impresses with the format of this selection. It seemed like a lot of the detail was lost for me with all of the production sound effects and extra voices. Hoping that they go back to just Bray for the next one.

80% noise and screaming, only 20% beercan

Not worth your time really. Story is fun, but it is just too much work to ignore the constant background noise. I can imagine that the voice actors had a lot of fun recording, but whoever mixed this down for consumption was either underpaid or not qualified. I hope this never happens again otherwise I will have to go back to reading again to drown out all the unproductive NOISE!!!!!!

too much noise

I enjoyed the new voices a lot but the all too common background noise often cancelled them out making it quite difficult to understand. Like did there have to be BG in the dutchmans cockpit?

Let's please stick to R.C. Bray performing alone

I can hardly stand listening to this. Fortunately it's only a few hours long. I will only finish this, so I can keep up with the storyline. Otherwise I would have returned it. No more audio dramas please! Let us just have fun with R.C. Bray's performances. This is awful.

never heard anything with that bad

really, really bad. More than half of the audio book consists of incomprehensible screaming and very bad and annoying shooting noises. Story is ok if you like the rest of the series.

disappointing

The story itself is okay, even though there are some logical gaps and the usual annoying unrealistic behaviour of the main characters. But you know, overall the story is entertaining, almost as entertaining as every other book of the EF series. The supposed Tier-I special forces guys and girls don't even sound like soldiers (Adam's Oorah will make you cringe for sure). Plus some of them are using annoying fake (or exaggerated) accents. Last but not least, most audio effects sound like they've been made in the 1960s. The most positive thing about the performance is RC Bray's Joe and the soundtrack. I recommend listening to this if you're a die hard fan of the EF series. If not, don't bother.

Why does everyone hate this, this is MAGNIFICENT!

First of all, the plot is pretty standard for Exfor. The makeup of this episode, however, is something different. I absolutely ADORE how R.C. Bray reads the "normal" novels, but having a full cast just adds more color to the characters. I really like how they did Smythe, even though he kind of sounds like an NPC from a cheap shooter game's intro sequence. Kate Mulgrew wasthe wrong choice for Nagatha, though. She's just way too Janeway and not enough "creepy aunt". Overall, I absolutely adore this. Will I be happy to get back to R.C. Bray's solo readings? Hell yes, they are just way more relaxing. Will I listen to this special episode again? HELL F***ING YES!
