The 26th century. Once considered clandestine, the Spartan-II program has now gone public. Tales of armored supersoldiers fending off thousands of Covenant attacks have become the stuff of legend. While the Master Chief defends a besieged Earth and the myriad factions of the Covenant continue their crusade to eliminate humanity, an ultra-secret cell of the Office of Naval Intelligence known as “Section Three” devises a plan to buy the UNSC vital time. It will need hundreds of willing soldiers, though - and one more Spartan - to get the job done.

Molly Patel was only seven years old when the alien alliance known as the Covenant destroyed her homeworld and killed her family. As one of the few to escape the glassing of Paris IV, and despite the United Nations Space Command winning the war on behalf of humanity, Molly never forgot how much she had lost. Nine years later, when her adoptive parents - research scientists specializing in ancient Forerunner technology - are called to the mysterious and wondrous place known as Onyx, Molly vehemently objects.

Description
USA Today best seller
A Master Chief story and original full-length novel set in the Halo universe - based on the New York Times best-selling video game series!
October 2559. It has been a year since the renegade artificial intelligence Cortana issued a galaxy-wide ultimatum, subjecting many worlds to martial law under the indomitable grip of her Forerunner weapons. Outside her view, the members of Blue Team - John-117, the Master Chief; Fred-104; Kelly-087; and Linda-058 - are assigned from the UNSC Infinity to make a covert insertion onto the ravaged planet Reach.
Their former home and training ground - and the site of humanity’s most cataclysmic military defeat near the end of the Covenant War - Reach still hides myriad secrets after all these years. Blue Team’s mission is to penetrate the rubble-filled depths of CASTLE Base and recover top-secret assets locked away in Dr. Catherine Halsey’s abandoned laboratory - assets which may prove to be humanity’s last hope against Cortana.
But Reach has been invaded by a powerful and ruthless alien faction, who have their own reasons for being there. Establishing themselves as a vicious occupying force on the devastated planet, this enemy will soon transform Blue Team’s simple retrieval operation into a full-blown crisis. And with the fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance, mission failure is not an option....

Halo: Lechatelierite.
true, i was expecting Scott or Todd, but Sean's alright, first i think I've heard him, but he's alright.
the book is alright in general, can't say Troy is my favorite author, and he needs to remove lechatelierite from his vocabulary after this book, but he paints the picture well, and it doesn't feel rushed, and that's about all i could ask for in a story.
Sean's performance as a narrator is excellent, perhaps unfitting of the history of other narrators, he's a bit higher voiced than I'm remembering from Scott or Todd, so deeper voices, older gravelly soldiers, brutes, elites, there a little... off, but certainly not bad, just not a deep voice. he strikes me as a younger man
otherwise, it makes a number of references to the games and previous books in relation to fall of reach and uh... its been a minute, i think first strike. so an enjoyable entry overall.
(Acquired book for free through free trail. worth buying for full price? yes. compared to Eric Nylund, eh, but maybe the best Troy Denning entry so far, versus oblivion and silent storm.)

Fan-f**king-tastic.
The story itself is solid. Troy Denning has proven once again that he's the best thing to happen to the Halo Universe outside of the games. He perfectly captures each of the members of Blue Team. He also does something very hard and that is that he manages to walk the fine line of homage/proper fan service and shoe-horned, cheesy fan service. Most, if not all, of this book feels natural to the setting. My only real complaint, if you can call it one, is that it feels like it just kind of ends abruptly. I wanted more. I wanted it to keep going. It felt like it could have had at least a couple more chapters.
Sean Patrick Hopkins is the perfect narrator. I have seen a couple others say his voice is too high pitched. I would have to respectfully disagree. Obviously, he's no Steve Downes, but his voice gets very deep for the Jiralhanae. It's wonderful. Besides that, he manages to make each one of Blue Team, and all the cast for that matter, feel distinct. John's voice is deep, even, and reasonable. Fred's voice is even, witty, dry, and sarcastic. Kelly is sarcastic as well, slightly gloomy at times, and, not for the first time, she has an English accent again. Linda is calm, icy, and collected as always.
I like Scott Brick for some books, but not Halo. The cast of characters is too vast and varied for his style. I would love to see more of Sean Patrick Hopkins. Overall, if you're very deep into Halo's lore, this is a must-read.

Not great
The author's tendency to over-describe things that don't have any real-world frame of reference was quite irritating, nobody in the real world knows what a "glassed" planet looks like so describing it in detail is pointless. For example: If I went back in time and described a cell phone to someone living in 1860 I wouldn't talk about gorilla glass, or 5G, or hotspot tethering because those things would mean nothing to them, and using those terms would only make describing what a cell phone is more difficult to explain. That is what it was like listening to the way the author described what the reader/listener is supposed to picture in their mind's eye. Things don't always need 5 words when 1 word will do. The story itself was rather pointless, literally. The entire story felt like it could have been widdled down to a 35-page novella. The author of this book really should take listens in descriptive storytelling from his Halo novel peers like Matt Forbeck and Eric Nylund.

Narrator makes Chief sounds like some green FNG
Should have casted Scott Brick. The story is probably good, it's just hard to continously listen to and finish it. The narrator is probably just doing his job but following Scott Brick's previous work on the series it just doesn't sound or feel right. Rather disappointing seeing how the story takes place after the disappointment that was Halo 5.

Wow. Just, wow. Is this recoverable?
This book has had so much built up in terms of anticipation, and boy did it collapse on itself. Sean Patrick Hopkins would be a good reader in ANY OTHER book outside of the Halo Series. First off, his interpretation of the voices of key, WELL ESTABLISHED characters is so far off I couldn’t listen after he came in with Kelly, and was annoyed turning into frustration when he voiced Master Chief. Kelly now has an accent? That just...no words. Disgusting? Stupid? Wrong? Master Chief talks in a raspy voice like a kid trying to sound older or tough. Now I have to get a refund on this book and spend more money simply to buy the book to read it in order to actually grasp the story, because I cannot even get into the story when it sounds like nails on a chalkboard, or styrofoam on styrofoam to my ears whenever I hear Mr. Hopkins voice one of the characters already voiced to perfection by Todd McLaren or Scott Brick. Redo this with either one of them, it’ll save this story. Sean entirely ruined it. Bottom line.

Fell Short
... I was really hoping I would be here saying Troy stepped it up on this one, I truly really was. I got excited in the beginning because it was starting to become true! Once I got further in, it was the same lack of passion and wonder as Oblivion. It really did start out promising. The first few chapters to this story were PERFECT. They were enjoyable, colorful, dynamic, and filled with a sense of a true Halo story. Then it just flattened out. The climax revealed nothing unexpected and what little mystery you were hoping to be resolved, never resolved. Just big name drops from other characters in the games. The narrator did a wonderful job in giving it life and an AMAZING job on the voices! In sci-fi one expects certain breakdowns of some actual science fiction but this reads like someone describing a science fiction movie they saw, with little insight in how things function. This is a Halo novel released before a new Halo title and it did not feel like it. Still awaiting that hit Halo novel that leaves you tearing through pages and shocked with answers you didn’t expect. I did learn one thing though! Lechatelierite!

it's okay
it has alot of filler and blue team doesn't find themselves in any better position at the end of the book as opposed to the beginning. they acomplish the mission but we dont even know what they retrieved that's so important.
