Description

The official prequel to the action video game Gears 5, beginning immediately after Gears of War 4 and leading directly into the new game.

Following Reyna Diaz’s death at the hands of the Swarm (in Gears of War 4), Kait seals her mother’s tomb and swears revenge. As she, JD, Del, Marcus, Cole, Samantha, and Baird lick their wounds and resupply, First Minister Jinn summons them to New Ephyra, promising that the “crimes” they committed will be forgiven. Before they can rejoin the Coalition, however, Jinn demands proof of their loyalty, and of the threat of the Swarm. Promised a new command, JD and Del agree. Plagued by nightmares, Kait rebels and refuses. When she discovers that two teens from her devastated village have survived, she goes rogue and strikes out to rescue them, accompanied by Marcus Fenix. Pursued by the robotic DeeBees, Kait and Marcus search for survivors. Instead, they find an overwhelming force of the enemy - and an unexpected ally. Meanwhile JD and Del lead a mission to locate the Swarm, only to be cut off from New Ephyra. Trapped and surrounded, they’re on their own. Picking up where Gears of War 4 left off, Gears of War: Ascendance is the official, action-packed bridge between that game and Gears 5.

A lacking in story of Gears.

the narrator lacked in the ability to interpret and display on how each character should sound and or act like through out the story during there speaking parts.

the author who wrote this book in the series seriously missed a huge opportunity in explaining in more detail and deeper in depth on the characters. no flashbacks no building of characters for the future of the books and games. I had expected more out of the book than was delivered.

Narrator...

I prefer the original narrator for these books. I'm not trying to ruin the person's career, but she just doesn't have what it takes to do all the voice acting the original audiobooks had.
I thought the story was ok, but it would've been better if it had more emotion, better descriptions, like the old books used to, and better dialogue.

Regardless, I find it hard to pass up a Gears of War story.
Back to The Slab!! :)

Filling The Gap, But Made Me Nap

Slight Spoilers....Kinda

Let's say first off I am a huge Gears Fan.

I was intrigued how this would bridge the gap from Gear 4 to 5....

1. It picks up right when Gears 4 ends.

2. It gives decent insight on the new CoG.

3. It gives a bit of back story of Baird.

4. It gives no back story of Cole, First Minister Min ...except brief snippets.

5. I can literally recount where every person was because I couldn't tell if they were investigating Swarm activity or trying to fight it. I thought we did that plot cycle in Gears 4? Basically there's six locations where the story takes place. Most very similar.

6. Kait, who is the focus of the story, is literally a whiny, emotional wreck for almost the entire book, it takes away from strong, tough females that are present in the Gears story arcs.

7. Everything else plot wise, character development, story arcs, emotional responses, etc. was decent.

8. The narrator was ok, but all the other Gears books, the narrator did every character voice perfectly, it was like I was playing the game. This narrator tried, but female narrators can't pull off male voices very well and via versa. I understand Kait is the focus of the novel, so a female voice is appropriate, but Marcus and JD are the face of Gears and it just does'nt work with female narration in my opinion, which is just an opinion.

9. Overall pretty good book, but kind of snoozy.

10. I hope this ties in with Gears 5 seamlessly.

Disappointing

Bad writing. Clearly this plot was handed down from corporate and the writer was told to fill on the details, the did so poorly. Characters make decisions that make no sense except to further the plot. Everything was flat and two dimensional.

blah

wish Karen Travis continued the story, all of the previous gears books were so much better. the narration was off for me as well. maybe I'm just being overly sensitive because I'm a huge gears of war fan but this story fell very short for me.

also the epilogue completely makes zero sense and follows no timeline in the book series or game series...I want anrefund

Amazing continuation of the Gears Saga

When I heard Jason Hough was taking the helm for Ascendance I couldn't have been happier. I LOVED his Dire Earth series, which I recommend to everyone that enjoys apocalyptic science fiction. Gears of War: Ascendance brings the same superb and action packed storytelling. This book is emotional and moves like a burst from a Lancer. Highly recommended!

Good listen and story.

Story was good as always, a bit short compared to the other books. The narrator should have been David Colacci like the other books. Didnt have the same feel.

Great performance by Nan

Love the fact that there’s Gears of War in Audible!

Nam McNamara did a perfect narration, really enjoyed that.

Story is entirely optional even though it has some interesting bits as well while exploring Delta’s relationship with the first minister.

Give it a go if you’re a Gears fan.
