Description
"A key to the audiobook’s success for fans is its all-star cast — a strong advantage here for audio over print. When a “Next Generation” cast member speaks in 'Fan Fiction,' from Patrick Stewart to Marina Sirtis, it’s that actor’s actual voice you’re hearing." - The Providence Journal
"Incredible production values (one of the best soundscapes I’ve ever heard, honestly) and some interesting insights from Spiner..."- Locus
This program is read by the author with LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Genie Francis, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, Patrick Stewart, and a full cast.
Brent Spiner’s explosive and hilarious novel is a personal look at the slightly askew relationship between a celebrity and his fans. If the Coen Brothers were to make a Star Trek movie, involving the complexity of fan obsession and sci-fi, this noir comedy might just be the one.
Set in 1991, just as Star Trek: The Next Generation has rocketed the cast to global fame, the young and impressionable actor Brent Spiner receives a mysterious package and a series of disturbing letters, that take him on a terrifying and bizarre journey that enlists Paramount Security, the LAPD, and even the FBI in putting a stop to the danger that has his life and career hanging in the balance.
Featuring a cast of characters from Patrick Stewart to LeVar Burton to Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, to some completely imagined, this is the fictional autobiography that takes listeners into the life of Brent Spiner, and tells an amazing tale about the trappings of celebrity and the fear he has carried with him his entire life.
Fan Fiction is a zany love letter to a world in which we all participate, the phenomenon of “Fandom.”

Best narration of any audiobook, ever.
Best narration of any audiobook, ever. I've heard Neverwhere read by Benedict Cumberbatch/Natalie Dormer/James McAvoy and Octopussy read by Tom Hiddleston but this cast on Fan Fiction is still top spot for narration.
This story induces cringing, but handles cringy subjects artfully. If this Fan Fiction Mem-noir were published on AO3, it might benefit from trigger warning tags for stalking, childhood abuse, drug use, gun violence, psychiatric malpractice and abusive relationships. I found it entertaining and positive overall, with a satisfactory resolution.
Also I laughed so much... they should have released this book on Sunday because it's a 10/10!

Heavy on nostalgia, quirky on storyline.
I am a second generation Trekkie and grew up with TNG from birth. I love the idea of fan fiction written by a cast member. The voice work of all the cast is superb and warms my nostalgic heart for each actor that makes a cameo. The story has a lot of dream sequences and drug trips. It can feel almost film noir as it spins a detective yarn. Basically, if you like the episodes where Data is in the holodeck, you’ll probably like this spin on a alternate dimension where Brent Spiner has to deal with crazed fans of the show who want to (marry/boff/kill) him.

Crazy, weird, wild, strange... but above all, fun.
I received an advanced copy of the ebook version, and I enjoyed it enough to still want to buy an official copy. When I discovered the TNG cast would all be playing themselves, it became a must-buy. Brent does an excellent job as the main narrator, and the dialogue provided by his castmates is seamlessly threaded in. A fantastic read and a great listen.

I really tried to like it
As a TNG fan I thought this book might be a lot of fun. I was wrong. It doesn't have a particularly interesting plot, the characters are only moderately appealing, and the writing is sophomoric at best. Sorry, Brent. You're a heck of an actor and have created an iconic character, and you should have stuck with what you're good at.

Not my cup of tea
I loved having Brent narrate with TNG cast members, and it was a tolerable listen, but after thinking back to it, I am not sure I really liked the plot. I found myself laughing more at Levar and Patrick’s few moments of lines than I did at the entirety of the story itself. I rolled my eyes several times listening to the interactions with Brent and the twins, and the ending left a lot more questions than satisfying answers. I really tried to like this, and I still love Brent Spiner as an actor (forever the Trekkie I am), but I might be more hesitant to preorder a book next time.

I loved everything about this!
Seriously, this was grear. A hilarious and engaging story. A cast of some of my favorite actors. A love note to friends, and a nod to all the fans and fan fiction writers of Star Trek.

Very amusing!
This was fun to listen to! It helped me survive a six hour drive though Idaho. Brent Spiner has somewhat irreverent humor at times, but I don't mind. He is funny and relatable with great comedic timing. Not all of it was laugh out loud funny, but it got a good chuckle or two out of me. It's fun to wonder which parts -- if any -- are based in reality. As a fan of Star Trek TNG, there were moments when I felt strange, and maybe a little self conscious. But I get the sense that Spiner really appreciates his fans. He shows self awareness about his part in the cultural phenomenon that is Star Trek. Spiner acknowledged his neuro-divergent fans and the significance his character has for that community. I appreciate that he spoke about it in such a kind and genuine way. My husband is autistic, and in the last couple months he's become a fan of Star Trek TNG and Data in particular. I've been a fan since I was fifteen (I'm 26 now), and Data was always my favorite character. I was a little worried that this book would spoil the show a bit. I don't think it has. Well, not entirely. I'm sure I will have new perspectives on the show. But Data is still Data to me, and Brent Spiner is funny and entertaining in his own right. I appreciate them both :)

Yikes.
If you are reading this as a TNG fan, stop after the Roddenberry death chapter. There are no more cameos or cool behind the scenes anecdotes after that.
The rest of the story is a cringe-worthy white male twin sex fantasy rife with misogynistic narcissism and a superficial obsession with the ‘good ol days’. The reason for the story is obviously Spiners childhood trauma with his evil step father. This book should have been a therapy session.
Read it for the exclusive Star Trek snippets, not for the story.

Best Audio Book
This was the best audio book I have listened to. Brent Spiner's narration was done only as an author could do, perfect. The cameo voices of other Next Generation cast members brought the story alive. The story itself left me laughing out loud. Definately the most unique autobiographical book I have ever read, which made the book so fun.

Like finding a gold nugget
English isn't my native tongue so I'll make it short:
This audiobook was one of the greatest things I've ever heard. The mix of fiction and reality together with the mix of fine irony with blunt humour together with the mix of whodunit and autobiography is so incredibly irresistable. To make things even better it's so well audio-acted by the author himself and all the other characters. A feast for every TNG-Fan but also for fans of humorous mystery stories.

Hilariously funny, innocently cute and wonderfully self-ironic. The original voices paired with a clever auditory background make this one a treat for any fan.
