    Description

Soon to be a major motion picture directed by Denis Villeneuve, starring Timothée Chalamet, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård, and Charlotte Rampling.

Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family - and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction.

Frank Herbert's death in 1986 was a tragic loss, yet the astounding legacy of his visionary fiction will live forever.

Many voice actors, sometimes not used

It is a wonderful book but sometimes they dont use the voice actors and it is annoying to asign a voice to a character in your mind only to have it then read by the narrator. Don't get me wrong, the narrator is good, but then you get used tohis voice for the characters and then boom! the actors voices again. It makes you think as if there were two of the same character. Kudos on the baron's voice actor.

    The performance is a disaster

Dune is one of my favorite books, I read it multiple times so I thought to give the audio version a go. What a disappointment.

For whatever reason, and this is sadly continued throughout the series, they chose to use a lot of voice actors, some good soma bad. They also clearly didn't record them using the same quality and you can hear a disturbing echo with some voices. The main voice (I think he's Simon Vance) is great, they should have left him perform the entire book alone. But no, they added individual voices for each character... but only sparsely. For example: one chapter with the Baron would be read using different actors, another chapter using the main voice (Vance). Some chapters feature a voice actor for Paul, one for Jessica, another for Stilgar and so on... Others are Vance all alone. Clearly they cut Vance's performance and added the "theatrical" chapters after. Or vice-versa. It's a mess... and the only available version of a great book. If I hadn't read it beforehand, I wonder if I had liked it at all. Some of the voices seem fake... not believing what they're reading... I don't know.

I would say avoid this version, look for something else.

    Great performance, poor Audible structure

The performance is great, and story of course is a must-hear. It is a shame that the title is not divided by chapter but by books. The navigation hinders a bit the experience. Still recommend it.

Dune - a must read for the science fiction enthusiast

There are lots of good stories out there, but through DUNE, Frank Herbert has given the world a true blend of the fantastic, sprinkled with some reality. The beauty of an audiobook, is that it takes our consciousness back to the times when stories were shared mouth to ear. A great way to enjoy these stories!

This is NOT a faithful recitation of the book!

A lot of the reviews listed here slam the cast for inconsistencies with voices portrayed by certain actors, but I didn't have a problem following who was supposed to be talking. Anyone who read the physical book previously should be able to follow the dialogue easily enough. What caught me off guard is that this listing takes significant liberties with what is presented to us as consumers of this product. It does not follow all the characters like the physical book does, instead focusing on Paul practically to the exclusion of the rest of the cast. This presentation leave out roughly 50% of what is presented in the physical book (that is my estimation and not an exact amount). Therefore I feel that this audio book should be re-titled to "Dune, or the Story of Paul".

This is not Dune as I know and love, and should at least be tagged as an abridged version of the story.

Leaves Out Descriptive Text of Dialogue

This leaves out all of the descriptive text surrounding dialogue so that you have to rely on the acting to understand to the dialogue, including knowing which character is speaking. I want to hear all of the author's words, not some actor's interpretation of the words.

Lame Voice Actors - Disappointing - They Ruin My Favorite Book Of All Time

I am a huge fan of Frank Herbert’s Dune. I have reread it multiple times since the mid 70’s. I even enjoyed the Lynch /McLaughlin movie and the SciFi Channel productions, though both had their issues. I look forward to the new big budget DUNE movie scheduled for release in November 2020.

(As an aside can you imagine Dune in November 2020 and Avatar II in December 2020! Those will finally encourage me to visit a movie theater again. I generally avoid theaters with all their derivative dumbed down Hollywood super hero stuff geared to 13 year olds flashing their phones and talking, kicking chairs, loudly unwraping their movie junk food, spilling their prediabetic colas etc. I’ll take Netflix and Amazon video over movie theaters these days! And hopefully by Nov. & Dec. 2020 we might have direct home delivery of first run movies. Of course the existence of 3D still might encourage a theater visit for these two major movie releases. We shall see.)

Back to Dune audiobook. I’m new to Audible and thought I would start my first audiobook with Dune. I was very disppointed. This audio book interpretation of Dune is a bad joke! The “voice actors” are lame and unimpressive and are obviously reading the story for the first time. For the veteran Dune fan like me, I was shocked how bad it was. None if the voice actors are believable. They are amateurs unfamiliar with the book and flow of the story. They are out of their depth. It also appears that one male voice actor does multiple parts, including the voice of a woman - the aging Benegeserit reverend mother who administers the ‘gom jabbar.” To hear this dude try to sound like a woman was painful! Hearing the very same voice actor do multiple parts was disruptive when there were many other voice actors in the cast. (And I might mention that Audible did a crappy job in even identifying and naming the voice actors and who played who. Can’t Audible even get that right?)

All of the voice actors lack depth and any semblance of real interaction. It is a cold read. It feels like they recorded their parts totally separately in remote studios. Jwhich were then edited together by an audio technician. I did not at all feel the flow of real human intersction. It was like hearing computers talk to each other. I finally had enough after three separate listening attempts over cumulatively 45 minutes. After being in almost continual auditory irritation, iI finally gave up.

And I see the same cast of losers is doing the whole Dune Series? (Dune Messiah, Children Of Dune , God Emperor of Dune, etc). WTF? Shame on Audible for ruining this wonderful book. They need to start all over. They blew it! Big Time. And yes I’m angry! I really looked forward to finally hearing Dune on my phone through bluetooth earbuds. I’ve really been a fan of podcasts for over ten years but have been slow to adopt audio books. Well this fiasco did not endear me to Audible. But I appreciate the ability to return the book for a credit - which I just did!

Last comment. I do think with the proper voice actors and production. that Dune can be a GREAT audiobook. It is a complex story but eminently “doable” in an audiobook format. The background music and sound effects were fine and were a plus to the production and that element was appreciated. But it was all brought down with these amateur voice actor hacks who phoned it all in with consistently horrible performances!

    Stop leaving out entire sentences

First thing: I like Dune - the book, so this review has nothing to do with story itself.
While the performance itself was quite good, the multiple voice actors weren't really needed and were distracting. But the biggest problem was that the narrator didn't read sentences such as: "He said."
I read and listen to an audiobook all at once and because of leaving out entire sentences this was not very enjoyable. I would not recommend this audiobook to another if they want to read at the same time as they're listening.

    Starts out great

Starts out great but then the narrations begins to vary, sometimes it sounds like a full cast performing, then it switches to a single narrator doing voices, then that narrator is switched with another who sounds totaly different. Then it goes back to the full cast w/ many voices. The changes are jarring and happen without warning often in the middle of a chapter so you are constantly confused as to who is speaking and what is going on. There is no consitency in the narration of voices- all very random and sporadic. A headache of a listen and considering the level of detail and involved plot elements this makes for a very confusing experience.
    Not well executed.

    Wonderful production!

WOW!! The narration in this book is always good with segments that are GREAT. There were some complaints about the changing of accents or voices. I think of this in these terms. The normal narrator goes along telling you the story, and then at times there is an 'enhanced' scene, a scene where the voices are really acted out, usually with several different voice actors. I think of this as a picture in a book, this enhanced scene has a different set of voices because of the change in actors, but at these times you are also sucked into the story a bit more. Eventually the enhanced scene ends and the story is passed back to the standard narrator. As for the sound effects and the music, I think they all add to the richness of the story. I was never distracted from the story because of them. When I first heard the change between the 'enhanced' scenes and the standard narration, I was a little confused, but I quickly recognized the extra enjoyment I got from these enhanced scenes, and looked at them as a positive factor rather than seeing them as a negative. If I had known, going into the recording that it happened this way, I don't think I would have been confused at all. I think if you go into this thinking that the story was recorded with an excellent narrator, then the producers went back and 'enhanced' certain scenes for your enjoyment, you will be able to fully appreciate the wonderfulness of this recording.

Please. Do You Really Need Another Great Review?

Frank Herbert, I OWE you. I owe you a LOT. This was one of the very first books that truly stirred my love for science fiction. You SPOILED me. You made me demand better writing from the authors I followed, and better development, as well. From this book on, I became harder on myself, to read works that challenged me, that made me ponder well after finishing the novel. I hungered for better writing that combined story, action, flow, cadence and for God's sake, CREATIVITY. Thanks, Frank.

THAT'S what good writing demands of us, and if the author excels at his or her craft, this book is the perfect example of what can happen.

In Dune, you get galaxy-sweeping politics, messianic jihads, genetically-enhanced warriors and spacefarers, pirates hiding ruling classes, clones that psychically destroy their victims, fantastic ecologies and creatures, religions that manipulate families and bloodlines, and countless castes intertwined with ruling houses that all depend upon a drug found only on one desolate planet - A planet with its own secret and massive agenda, hidden within the howling desert plains covering its surface. And wait, it's followed by yet ADDITIONAL novels in the series, some better than others, and then yet ANOTHER series by the author's SON, done decades later, that provides tremendous PREQUELS, based on his father's notes? Finally, throw in excellent male and female narrators that fit the characters they portray, and individualize each character.

Come on. Do you really need another great review to buy this audiobook?

    Please.

    Dune narrated anew

I read the book watched the movie and series and listened to another version of the Dune audiobook. Usually I prefer audiobooks with solely reader but this version captured me nonetheless. The voice actors were chosen very well and fitting to the characters, even changing in tone and way of speech according to the character's personal development. Apart from a few passages that should have been read by these actors but were instead performed by the main voice this audiobook is a definite recommendation.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

    Audio: aac, 22050 Hz, stereo, 62 kb/s - Normal wäre: 44100 Hz, stereo, 125 kb/s

Excellent production with only one small blemish

Excellent production. Excellent speakers. The story itself, one of the greatest sci fi novels of all time. But there is one blemish on this otherwise impeccable product: Whoever split the audio book in its "chapters" should be fed naked to a sand wyrm. How can you place chapter breaks so stupidly right in the middle of book chapters. The whole idea of the "stop at end of chapter" function is supposed to be that you can lay aside an audio book when the story makes a break, and pick it up later to resume listening with the beginning of the next story part. This is not the case in this audio book where the "chapter breaks" break actual chapters of the book in nonsense fashion, and will have the App end your session right in the middle of something happening, to resume the next time in confusion as you forgot what was the action that you are thrown in without introduction.

    Tiresome

Everybody is talking about this so I gave it a go. I like sci-fi classics normally so I thought I would like this one, but the story didn't really captivate me and the writing style felt tedious.
Everybody is constantly "sensing" what other people are thinking and the eye of the story keeps switching mid scene. The main characters are annoyingly good at everything and keep getting more awesome by the minute. All the scheming also gets a bit much after a while and the constant sense of gravitas didn't help.
I've been told it only really gets interesting in the sequels but right now I am not at all motivated to try.
Sorry to everyone who loved it, tastes are allowed to be different. If you seek light entertainment, maybe look somewhere else.
